A light that refuses to switch on is one of those problems that starts small and gets annoying fast. You twist in a new bulb — nothing. You try another — still nothing. Now you're wondering whether it's the switch, the fitting, or something in the wiring you can't see. That uncertainty is exactly what we're here to remove.

Why a Single Light Stops Working

Most dead lights come down to one of five everyday causes. The bulb itself has simply reached the end of its life, which is more common than people expect — incandescent and halogen lamps often fail without obvious signs. The lamp holder inside the fitting can lose its grip on the bulb, so the contacts never touch properly. Connections inside the fitting or at the ceiling rose work loose over years of heating and cooling. The switch mechanism wears out internally. Or a fault on the lighting circuit — a tripped RCD, a junction that's failed behind a wall — has quietly cut the light off from the supply.

Each of these needs a different fix, and guessing at them is how people end up buying four bulbs and still sitting in the dark.

The Checks You Can Safely Try First

There are a couple of things worth doing before you call us. Try a bulb you know works — one you've just taken out of another fitting. Check whether the room's other lights behave normally, because that tells us whether this is a single-fitting problem or a wider circuit problem. Have a look at your consumer unit and see whether anything has tripped.

Don't take the fitting apart, and don't poke around in the ceiling rose. Those terminals are live even with the switch off, and a screwdriver in the wrong place can turn a dead light into a genuinely dangerous one.

How We Narrow It Down

Our engineer starts with the obvious and works inwards. We confirm the supply to the circuit, then test for voltage at the switch, at the ceiling rose and at the lamp holder. That sequence pinpoints where the chain breaks. A live feed at the rose but not beyond it points to the fitting or its connections. No feed at all points upstream, to the switch, a junction or the circuit itself.

We also look at the state of what we find. Discoloured insulation, scorch marks or a warm lamp holder tell us the light has been struggling for a while, not just that a bulb blew this morning.

The Repair Itself

Most single-light faults are fixed within the visit. A new lamp holder, a remade connection, a replacement switch — these are straightforward, routine jobs. If the fault turns out to be in the circuit rather than the fitting, we'll explain what we've found, what it will take to trace it further, and get your agreement before continuing. You'll know the cost before any additional work starts, not after.

If a fitting itself is cracked, overheated or simply past it, we can talk you through a replacement at the same time rather than patching something we wouldn't put our name to.

Aftercare and Sensible Habits

Once the light is working, we'll tell you what caused the failure and whether it's likely to happen again. Sometimes the honest answer is "the bulb just wore out" — and there's nothing to do except keep a spare. Other times we'll point out a connection that was running warm, or a fitting that's working hard in a steamy bathroom, and suggest a small change that saves you a repeat call.

When to Call Us

Book a visit if a new bulb doesn't bring the light back, if the fitting has ever felt hot or smelt odd, if the light flickers before dying, or if you've lost more than one light at the same time. Those last two especially suggest something beyond the lamp itself, and it's better looked at properly than guessed at.

Book Your Light Repair Today

One visit, one methodical check, one working light — usually within the hour. Call Maintenance Men or book online, and tell us when the light last worked. That one detail often shortens the diagnosis considerably. Same-day appointments are regularly available across the West Midlands, and every visit is fully insured and carried out by a qualified electrician.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

2

We diagnose on site

The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

A light that suddenly stops working is frustrating, especially when you can't tell whether it's the bulb, the switch or something behind the ceiling. Swapping bulbs blind gets expensive and still might not solve it. We test the circuit methodically from the switch back to the supply, so you know exactly what failed and get it put right the same visit wherever possible.

Questions people ask about light not working

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

How does pricing work for a light repair?

You pay a booking fee when you arrange the appointment, and labour is then charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need us. Before any work starts, the engineer quotes the full cost of the job, and you approve it before tools come out. If the fix turns out to be quick, you only pay for the time it took.

Should I just keep trying new bulbs?

Trying one bulb you know works is sensible — it takes thirty seconds and rules out the most common cause. Trying three or four isn't, because if the real fault is a failed holder or a wiring problem, no bulb will work and you've spent money for nothing. If a known-good bulb doesn't light up, the problem is beyond the bulb.

What will the engineer actually check?

We test for power at the switch, at the ceiling rose and at the lamp holder, in that order. Wherever the supply stops is where the fault is. It sounds simple because it is — methodical testing beats guesswork, and it means we fix the real cause rather than whatever we noticed first.

Could a dead light actually be dangerous?

Occasionally, yes. A light that died after flickering, buzzing or smelling warm may have failed because something was overheating, and the burnt-out symptom is the end of a story rather than the whole of it. Tell us how the light behaved before it stopped — it shapes what we check and how urgently we check it.

The bulb looks fine but the light still won't work — why?

Filaments and LED internals can fail invisibly, so a bulb can look perfect and still be dead. But if you've tried a bulb that works elsewhere, the usual culprits are a worn lamp holder whose contacts no longer pinch the bulb firmly, a loose connection in the rose, or a failed switch. All three are routine repairs.
