What a warm fridge usually means

When a fridge stops cooling but the interior light still works, the fault sits somewhere between the settings, the cooling system and the air path. Some causes are simple: a dial knocked out of position, a door seal that has perished, or a freezer vent blocked by food so cold air cannot reach the fridge compartment. Others involve the components that actually drive cooling, such as the thermostat, the fan, or the compressor and its starting relay.

The important thing is not to assume the worst. Many no-cooling calls end with a repairable electrical or airflow fault rather than a dead cooling system.

What we check on the visit

The engineer starts with the basics: the temperature settings, the location of the appliance and the space around it, and whether the freezer compartment is frosting or the vents are blocked. We check that the door closes fully and that the seal grips evenly, because even a small gap makes the appliance run warm.

From there we move to the cooling circuit in safe terms: listening to whether the compressor starts and runs, checking the evaporator fan spins, and testing the thermostat and related electrical components. Where a fault points to the sealed refrigerant system itself, we explain exactly what that means, because sealed-system work is a specialist job we do not carry out and we will say so plainly rather than attempt it.

Moving perishables while you wait

If the fridge has been warm for more than a few hours, act on the contents. Move perishables such as meat, dairy and leftovers to a working fridge, a cool bag with ice packs, or a neighbour's appliance. Follow the storage and date guidance on the packaging rather than any fixed rule we could give here, and when in doubt about something high-risk like raw meat or seafood, it is safer to discard it.

Repair or replace

If the diagnosis is an electrical component, a fan motor, a thermostat or a seal, the fix is usually straightforward and we can quote it on the spot. Parts for fridges vary by brand and model, so if a specific component is needed we identify it and quote it separately; availability depends on the manufacturer.

If the compressor or the sealed system has failed, a repair can approach the cost of a new appliance on older models. We will give you the honest arithmetic with the model in front of us, including whether a replacement makes more financial sense, and we will not talk you into a repair we would not choose ourselves.

Safety points worth knowing

Do not run the appliance continuously if it is warm, humming oddly or tripping the electrics; switch it off at the socket if anything smells hot or burnt. Never open or tamper with the sealed pipework at the back of a fridge, and leave any capacitor-containing electronics to a competent engineer. Keep the area behind the appliance dust-free so air can circulate, but only clean it with the plug pulled out.

Booking your visit

Call or use our contact form and tell us the brand and model number, roughly when the cooling failed, and anything the fridge is doing — running constantly, silent, clicking, or tripping the electrics. If your food has already had to be moved, mention that so we can prioritise the visit. Where the fault needs a specific part, we arrange the follow-up around that order rather than leaving you waiting. You will know the price before the engineer picks up a screwdriver, and nothing proceeds without your approval.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

A fridge that runs but does not cool is stressful because the clock is ticking on everything inside. Our engineer visits to diagnose the fault properly, testing the parts that control temperature rather than guessing at a single cause. You get a clear explanation of what is wrong, whether it can be repaired, and an honest quote before anything is undertaken.

Questions people ask about fridge not cooling

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Can I fix a warm fridge myself?

Check the dial settings, clear any food blocking the internal vents, and look at the door seal for gaps — these are safe checks. Anything involving the back panel, the compressor or internal electrics should be left to an engineer.

What will the engineer actually test?

Settings and airflow, door seals, the thermostat, the evaporator and condenser fans, and whether the compressor starts and runs normally. This narrows the fault before any parts are suggested.

What if the sealed refrigerant system is at fault?

Sealed-system faults, including suspected refrigerant loss or a failed compressor circuit, are specialist work we do not carry out. We will tell you clearly if that is what the diagnosis points to and explain your options.

Should I empty the fridge before the visit?

No need to empty it, but do move perishables somewhere safe if the compartment has been warm for several hours. Packaging date and storage guidance is the best guide to what is still fine.

How much does a fridge cooling diagnosis cost?

When you book, a booking fee is paid to secure the appointment. Labour is charged at an hourly rate that depends on how soon you need the visit, with shorter notice costing more. Before any work starts we quote the full cost and you approve it, and any parts or materials are identified and quoted separately if they are needed.
