Learning to read the noise
Different noises point to different components. A rhythmic buzz or hum that stops and starts is usually the compressor doing its job, and a slightly louder hum than before may just be a hot kitchen or restricted airflow. Clicking every few minutes, though, often means the compressor's start relay trying and failing. Grinding or whirring from inside the cabinet points to the evaporator fan, especially if the noise stops when you open the door. Rattling or vibration is often mundane: a loose panel, an unlevel cabinet, or pipework touching a wall. A knocking or gurgling that has always been there is usually normal coolant movement.
The changes worth acting on are new noises, louder noises, and noises with a pattern — like clicking that repeats or grinding that gets steadily worse.
What we check on the visit
The engineer listens to the appliance running, asks you to reproduce the noise, and localises it: inside the cabinet, at the back, or underneath. We check the obvious external causes first — footing, clearance, loose panels, pipework touching the wall — because a surprising number of noise calls are solved by re-levelling and a few centimetres of gap.
We then examine the fans for icing or bearing wear, test the compressor's start components if the clicking pattern suggests them, and check whether the noise coincides with a cooling problem. If the sound points into the sealed refrigerant system, we tell you plainly: that is specialist work, including any refrigerant recharge, that we do not carry out.
What the noise means for the food
A noisy fridge with normal cooling is not an emergency, but a grinding fan that fails will take the airflow with it, and a compressor that clicks without starting leaves the cabinet warming within hours. Book the diagnosis promptly rather than waiting for the noise to resolve itself — it rarely does. Keep an ear on whether the cooling is holding while you wait, and move perishables if the cabinet starts drifting warm.
Repairs we typically carry out
Fan motors are the most common noise-related repair and are usually straightforward once the correct model-specific part is identified. Compressor start relays are also commonly replaced. Re-levelling, refitting panels and adding clearance cost little and solve a lot. Where a part is needed, we identify it and quote it separately, with availability depending on the manufacturer. If the diagnosis points to a failing compressor within the sealed system, we will compare the repair honestly against replacement, especially on an older appliance, rather than selling you an expensive losing fix.
Safety notes
Unplug the fridge before pulling it out to check behind it, and never reach into the mechanism area while it is running. If the noise comes with a burning smell, heat at the back, or the electrics tripping, stop using the appliance and switch it off at the socket if safe to do so. Do not open the back panel yourself — components there can hold charge even unplugged.
Booking your visit
Call or use our contact form with the brand and model number, a description of the noise — grinding, clicking, rattling, buzzing — when it happens, and whether cooling is still normal. A short phone video of the sound and its timing genuinely helps. Ask the household when the noise is loudest too, because overnight in a quiet kitchen often reveals patterns the daytime rush hides. A booking fee is paid when booking, the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit, and you approve the full quote before any work starts.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
Fridges hum, but grinding, rattling, clicking or buzzing means something has changed, and noises usually get worse rather than better. Our engineer listens to the sound, finds the component behind it, and explains whether it is a loose panel, a failing fan or something more serious. You get an honest diagnosis and a firm quote before any repair begins.

Questions people ask about fridge making loud noise
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Is a humming fridge normal?
Yes — a steady hum that cycles on and off is the compressor working. New noises, grinding, repeated clicking or a hum that never stops are the ones worth diagnosing.
What does repeated clicking usually mean?
Clicking every few minutes often indicates the compressor start relay attempting and failing to start the compressor. It is commonly repairable, and it matters because a compressor that cannot start means a warming fridge.
Can I fix the noise myself?
Checking the fridge is level, adding clearance behind it, and tightening any loose external panels are safe steps with the appliance unplugged. Internal fans, compressors and electrics are for an engineer.
The noise stops when I open the door — what does that mean?
That pattern points to the evaporator fan inside the cabinet, which pauses when the door opens. It is one of the most common noise faults and usually a straightforward repair.
How much does a noise diagnosis cost?
A booking fee is paid when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost is quoted and approved before any work starts; any parts are identified and quoted separately.
