You Can Hear Visitors But They Can't Hear You? We'll Fix It in Knowle
One-way intercom audio nearly always traces to a microphone, a button or a connection — we find which and repair it to your approved quote.
Booking fee plus hourly labour — the price is confirmed before any work starts.

One-way audio — you can hear your visitor but they cannot hear you — is a surprisingly specific fault, and that specificity is useful. Speech circuits in door entry systems are separate in each direction, so a one-way failure points to the transmit path on your side: your handset's microphone, the hookswitch that opens the circuit, the wiring carrying your voice back to the panel, or the speaker in the entrance panel itself.
Why it happens
The most frequent cause is a failed or blocked microphone in the handset — the element degrades with age, or years of dust and grime muffle it. The second most common is the hookswitch: the small switch that closes when you lift the handset can stick or corrode so it never fully completes the transmit circuit. Loose or corroded connections on the transmit pair are another regular culprit, as is a failed speaker in the entrance panel, which leaves the visitor side silent even though your handset receives perfectly. On systems with a panel-mounted talk button, a sticking or failed button produces exactly the same symptom. Moisture in the panel can also selectively kill the outgoing audio while leaving the incoming path intact.
How we diagnose the transmit path
We test both directions of the speech path first, confirming the fault is genuinely one-way rather than a general quality problem. Then we work along the transmit side: testing or substituting the handset, checking the hookswitch operation, measuring continuity on the transmit wiring between handset and panel, and testing the panel's speaker and talk button. On video systems we also confirm the fault is confined to audio. By the end of the visit we can usually tell you whether the repair is a handset, a connection, a panel component or something on shared wiring.
Repairs and permissions
Typical fixes are a replacement handset or microphone element, cleaning or replacing the hookswitch contacts, re-terminating corroded connections, or replacing the panel speaker or talk button. Parts are quoted separately and the full cost is approved before we start. If the fault lies in communal equipment — the entrance panel or shared riser wiring — most buildings require landlord or managing agent permission for that work, and we will explain what needs authorising before we proceed. We do not force secured doors or bypass entry systems to reach communal equipment; access is arranged through whoever manages the building.
What not to do
Do not open the handset casing or attempt to clean the microphone with anything inserted — the elements are delicate and easy to damage, and an improvised repair usually complicates the diagnosis. Reseating a plug-in handset and checking any talk or privacy switch are the sensible DIY limits.
Honest expectations
We diagnose first, so no repair cost or duration can be promised until the fault is found. In older systems a degraded transmit element can coincide with early wear elsewhere, and if we find the system is approaching the end of its practical life we will say so and give you a straight comparison of repair versus replacement. If your building's system is maintained under a contract with another company, we will flag that rather than work across it unannounced.
When to book
Call when visitors cannot hear you at all, when they hear you faintly or intermittently, or when you have to shout directly into the panel to be heard — that last pattern strongly suggests a failed panel speaker rather than your handset. When booking, tell us the system make if you know it, whether it is audio or video, and whether other residents report the same problem.
One-way audio defeats the whole point of a door entry system. Get in touch and we will restore both directions of the conversation at a price you approve first.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.
Booked 14+ days ahead
£25 booking fee
then £85 per hour of labour
Best value. Book the slot now, pay the smallest booking fee.
Booked within 48 hours
£100 booking fee
then £65 per hour of labour
For jobs that can wait a day or two but not a fortnight.
Same-day call-out
£220 booking fee
then £45 per hour of labour
Urgent problems: standing water, no heat, no power, leaks.

Choose the window that suits you and pay the booking fee. That holds your place in the diary.
We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
Hearing a visitor clearly while they cannot hear you is unnerving: you are effectively deciding who to let in without being able to speak to them. The fault is nearly always in one direction of the speech path, which narrows the search considerably. Our visit tests the transmit side properly — handset microphone, panel speaker and the connections between — and we repair only what has actually failed.
What our customers say about our Security & CCTV service
5 out of 5 from 7 reviews
Would use again
Third time we have used Maintenance Men, and the same experience each time: agreed price, proper explanation, job done in one visit. The hourly rate is fair for the standard of work.
Job: CCTV Installation
Second time we have used them
I had put off sorting this for months because I expected a runaround. Quoted the booking fee plus hourly rate upfront, stuck to it, and actually found the underlying cause rather than just clearing the symptom. Worked neatly and hoovered up afterwards.
Job: Backup Battery Fault
Exactly what was quoted
What I appreciated was being told what was actually wrong before anyone started. Sorted in under 56 minutes and the invoice matched the quote to the penny.

Questions people ask about one-way audio fault
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Can I fix the microphone in my intercom handset myself?
Reseating a plug-in handset and checking talk or privacy switches are safe. Opening the handset or probing the microphone element is not — the components are delicate and easily damaged, and the wiring side is engineer work.
What will you check when audio only works one way?
We confirm the fault is one-directional, then test the handset microphone and hookswitch, the transmit wiring between handset and panel, and the speaker or talk button in the entrance panel. You get a specific diagnosis and a quote before any repair starts.
Is a one-way audio fault a safety issue?
It is a security issue rather than an electrical one: you cannot properly verify visitors, so be cautious about admitting anyone until the system is repaired. If the unit ever smells of burning or trips electrical circuits, stop using it and tell us when you book.
The problem affects everyone in our block — what then?
A building-wide fault points to the entrance panel or shared wiring, which is communal equipment. We will normally need permission from your landlord, agent or housing association to work on it, and we will tell you exactly what approvals are needed before attending.
How is the cost worked out?
A booking fee is paid when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. Once we have diagnosed the fault we quote the full cost before starting, with parts quoted separately, and work proceeds only after you approve it.
