When a gate motor fails, the gate goes from being a convenience you barely notice to a barrier you notice all day. Some failures are sudden — the gate was fine yesterday and is silent today. Others creep up: slower travel, a strained sound on cold mornings, stops part-way. Either way, the diagnosis is the same starting point: establish whether the motor has actually failed, or whether the motor is healthy and being let down by its supply, its control board or the mechanics it has to push against.

Types of Gate Motor and How They Fail

Most homes have swing gates driven by articulated arms or underground rams, or a sliding gate driven by a pinion on a rack. The failure modes differ. Arms and rams suffer worn bushes, leaking seals and failed limit switches. Sliding gate motors suffer worn pinions and drive plates. Common to all types are failed start capacitors (a classic cause of humming without turning), thermal cutouts tripping after overwork, water ingress into the motor housing, gearbox wear, and electronics failure in the operator's own control section.

Signs That Help Us Diagnose

Your observations genuinely narrow the search. A hum or click with no movement usually points to a capacitor or seized mechanics. Complete silence suggests supply, control board or a failed winding. Movement that starts but stalls part-way suggests increasing mechanical resistance or a fading capacitor. Repeated stop-starts with long pauses often indicate thermal cutout behaviour. Tell us what you heard and saw before the gate stopped — it is some of the most useful diagnostic information there is.

How We Assess the Motor

We confirm the supply to the operator is healthy, then test the motor's electrical condition with appropriate instruments — windings, capacitor, limit switches and connections. We check the mechanical side: whether the gate itself moves freely by hand when safely released per the manufacturer's instructions, and whether hinges, rams, racks or tracks are binding. Only when the motor is confirmed faulty do we talk replacement, because a healthy motor starved by a corroded connection does not need a new motor.

Repair or Replace — an Honest Answer

Some motor faults are repairable: a new capacitor, a replaced limit switch, resealing an enclosure, freeing a seized drive. Others are not economic — a worn gearbox, flooded electronics or windings burned out. Where replacement is right, we match the new operator to your gates' weight, length and duty, fit it with correct force settings, and make sure the safety devices are connected and tested. We do not promise a part is in stock or a completion time before we have seen the system; supply varies and we would rather be honest than optimistic.

Safety Matters More, Not Less, After a Motor Fault

A gate motor is the heart of heavy moving machinery, so nothing about its repair is a DIY job. Do not dismantle the operator, and use the manual release only strictly following the manufacturer's instructions — never force it, and never with anyone in the gate's path. After any motor work we test photocells and safety edges with a real obstruction test and confirm the force limits are set to specification. Those protections must never be disabled or bypassed; they are what stands between a moving gate and a person.

What We Need From You

When you book, tell us the make and model of the operator if you can see it on the label, what happened and when, and any sounds, beeps or indicator lights. A short video of the gate attempting to move is often worth a page of description. If the gates are unusually large or heavy, or the operator is old and discontinued, say so — it shapes the parts conversation before we arrive.

Booking Your Visit

Call Maintenance Men or book through our website. You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost of the repair or replacement is quoted and approved before we start, and any parts such as a capacitor or complete operator are quoted separately. Same-day visits may be available depending on the day's schedule.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

Booked 14+ days ahead

£25 booking fee

then £85 per hour of labour

Best value. Book the slot now, pay the smallest booking fee.

Booked within 48 hours

£100 booking fee

then £65 per hour of labour

For jobs that can wait a day or two but not a fortnight.

Same-day call-out

£220 booking fee

then £45 per hour of labour

Urgent problems: standing water, no heat, no power, leaks.

1

Book the slot

Choose the window that suits you and pay the booking fee. That holds your place in the diary.

2

We diagnose on site

The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.

3

You approve, we work

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

A dead motor usually announces itself — a click, a hum, silence where the whirr used to be. Our visit determines whether the motor itself has failed or something upstream is starving it, because those two problems have very different price tags and we will not sell you the expensive one on a hunch.

What our customers say about our Security & CCTV service

Would use again

Third time we have used Maintenance Men, and the same experience each time: agreed price, proper explanation, job done in one visit. The hourly rate is fair for the standard of work.

Job: CCTV Installation

Second time we have used them

I had put off sorting this for months because I expected a runaround. Quoted the booking fee plus hourly rate upfront, stuck to it, and actually found the underlying cause rather than just clearing the symptom. Worked neatly and hoovered up afterwards.

Job: Backup Battery Fault

Exactly what was quoted

What I appreciated was being told what was actually wrong before anyone started. Sorted in under 56 minutes and the invoice matched the quote to the penny.

Questions people ask about gate motor failure

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Is there any DIY fix for a failed gate motor?

Genuinely useful DIY is limited to checking the supply and isolator, replacing remote batteries, and noting symptoms. Do not open the motor housing, replace capacitors or dismantle the operator — mains-connected machinery with stored energy is not a hobbyist job. Use manual release only per the manufacturer's instructions and never with anyone near the gate path.

How do you tell if the motor is actually dead?

We test the supply to the operator first, then the motor's windings, capacitor and limit switches with proper instruments, and check the mechanics for binding. A motor that hums, clicks, stalls or moves weakly is diagnosed differently from one that is silent. Only a confirmed motor fault leads to a replacement quote.

Could the problem be something other than the motor?

Often, yes. Failed control boards, corroded connections, tripped supplies, lockouts after obstruction detection and stiff hinges all mimic a dead motor. That is why diagnosis comes before any replacement — replacing a healthy motor because of a wiring fault is money wasted, and we will say so when we find it.

Can you fit a different brand of motor to my gates?

Usually yes, where the operator's weight, length and duty ratings suit your gates and posts, and where the fixings and drive type are compatible. We will explain the options after diagnosis, including what safety devices the replacement supports, and quote accordingly before any work is agreed.

What will the repair cost?

You pay a booking fee when you book. Labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit, and the full cost is quoted and approved before any work starts. Parts, whether a capacitor or a complete new operator, are quoted separately so you can see exactly what you are agreeing to.
