A well-trimmed hedge does more for a garden than almost anything else of the same size: it frames the borders, gives privacy a neat face and makes the whole plot look cared for. It is also one of the most commonly postponed jobs, because hedge trimming is awkward, physical and generates a surprising amount of waste. That is precisely what this visit is for — and done regularly, it stays quick and cheap rather than becoming a big reduction job every few years.

Trimming to the species, not just the shape

Every hedge has its own calendar. Fast-growing privet and leylandii want trimming two or three times in the growing season; beech and hornbeam are usually cut once in late summer and hold their brown leaves through winter; laurel is best cut with secateurs or a sickle rather than shears, because sheared leaves go brown at the edges; and flowering hedges like forsythia or escallonia are trimmed after they flower, not before, or you cut off the display. We ask what your hedge is — or identify it on arrival — and time the cut accordingly, because a hedge cut at the wrong moment either flushes straight back out or sulks for a year.

Checking for residents before we cut

Before anything is trimmed, we check the hedge for nesting birds — thoroughly, not with a glance from the patio. In spring and early summer this is a real possibility in any decent hedge, and if we find an active nest we leave that section strictly alone until the young have flown. It is the law and it is also simple decency; we would rather come back in a fortnight than disturb a nest. The same check applies to hedgehog shelters, wasps and anything else that has decided your hedge is home.

How a good trim is done

The shape matters as much as the timing. A hedge should be slightly wider at the bottom than the top — a gentle taper — so sunlight reaches the lower growth and it stays thick and green to the ground; hedges cut dead square with fat tops go thin and gappy at the base within a few years. We cut to the height and line you want, take the faces back evenly rather than nibbling, and keep the top flat or gently rounded as the hedge suits. Long clippings are raked out of the hedge itself as we go, because material left inside rots and opens holes.

Clearing up properly

A trim that leaves a foot of clippings along the border is half a job. We gather and remove everything — green waste disposal is agreed with you in advance, so if you compost your own clippings we stack them neatly where you want them, and if you want them gone we take them. Edges and paths are swept or blown down afterwards, because the finishing touches are the part people actually notice.

Keeping the schedule

The cheapest hedge is a regularly trimmed one: light trims take a fraction of the time of a big cut-back and keep the hedge dense and healthy. If you would rather not think about it, we can put your hedges on a regular maintenance round — once or twice a year for slow growers, more often for the fast ones — timed to each species. It is the difference between maintaining a hedge and periodically rescuing one.

How to book

Booking is by phone or the website; tell us roughly how many hedges you have, their length and height, and whether you want clippings taken away. You pay a booking fee when you book, labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit, and the full cost is quoted and approved before we start, with any extras such as waste removal listed separately.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

1

Book the slot

Choose the window that suits you and pay the booking fee. That holds your place in the diary.

2

We diagnose on site

The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.

3

You approve, we work

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

A regular hedge trim is one of those jobs that transforms a garden for very little effort — as long as it is done at the right time and cut properly. Hacked-back hedges go brown and woody; timed, shaped hedges thicken up and stay tidy for months. We do the second kind.

What our customers say about our outdoor & exterior service

4.6 out of 5 from 10 reviews

Sorted the same day

Rang in the morning and they got to us in Wolverhampton by early afternoon. Very clear about what needed doing, what it would cost and what could wait. No pressure to add extras. Exactly the sort of tradesperson you want.

Job: Uneven Shed Base

Turned up when they said

Turned up in the window they promised, walked me through the options (turns out the previous installer had left the pipework awkward to get to), then cracked on. Everything was tested before they left. No mess, no drama, no surprise on the bill.

Job: Water-Damaged Patio

Good work, poor communication

Work itself was fine and tidy. Communication beforehand was patchy — I did not get the confirmation message and had to ring to check the slot. Would still use again.

Job: Sinking Driveway

Questions people ask about hedge trimming required

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Is trimming a hedge a realistic DIY job?

For low hedges you can reach from the ground, absolutely — a decent trimmer and a steady afternoon. Hedges above head height are a different matter, because ladder work with a cutter is genuinely risky and the results often show it. Many customers do the small hedges themselves and leave the tall or long ones to us.

What do you do as part of a hedge trim visit?

We identify the species and confirm the right timing, check the hedge for nesting birds, trim to a tapered shape at the height you want, rake clippings out of the hedge, and clear the borders and paths beneath it. Waste is either stacked for you or taken away, as agreed when we quote.

Is it safe to trim a hedge in windy weather?

No — wind makes ladder work dangerous and hammers clippings about, so we reschedule rather than push on. Wet weather is also poor for some cuts, particularly laurel, where torn leaves brown at the edges. External work depends on suitable conditions, and we would rather move your appointment than do a poor or unsafe job.

When is the best time of year to cut my hedge?

It depends on the species: fast growers like privet and leylandii are trimmed through the growing season, beech in late summer, and flowering hedges just after they finish flowering so you do not lose the blooms. We avoid heavy cuts during the main nesting season and check for active nests before starting whenever we do cut.

How much does a hedge trim cost?

You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost is quoted and approved before we start, and it reflects the hedge's length and height, how many hedges there are, and whether clippings are taken away.
