Driveways are supposed to shed water and carry cars on a flat, even surface. When yours has developed dips, ridges or steps between sections, the surface is telling you that something beneath it or beside it has moved. The good news is that many uneven driveways are straightforward to improve; the important part is understanding which type of unevenness you have, because a dipped drive and a heaved drive need different answers. This page explains the common causes, how we assess them and what repairs realistically achieve.

Why driveways become uneven

Settlement is the most common cause: where the ground or subbase beneath part of the drive was soft, poorly compacted or disturbed by an old trench, that section slowly sinks under traffic, leaving a dip that often matches the shape of what was buried. Water does the rest — it pools in the dip, soaks in and softens the base further, so unevenness tends to grow. Tree roots lift surfaces in ridges running towards the tree. Frost can heave poorly drained sections. On block paving, individual blocks can rock or sink at wheel paths while the rest stays level. And where a driveway meets a path or an older slab at a joint, two surfaces moving at different rates leave a step that catches everything from bin wheels to toes.

How we assess the unevenness

We map where the surface has moved and by how much, using straightedges and levels across the affected areas rather than eyeballing. We press and probe for soft or hollow spots to see whether the base beneath the dip is sound, check whether the movement follows vehicle wheel paths, old service trenches or tree lines, and look at where rainwater drains — pooling water is both a symptom and a continuing cause. We also look at the edges, where subbase loss often begins. On block paving, we check the edge restraints, because blocks without proper restraint migrate and sink at the boundaries first.

Repair options

For block paving with sunk or rocking blocks, the usual fix is to lift the affected blocks, re-level and compact the bedding layer, and relay — checking edge restraints while we are there. For concrete or tarmac dips, the honest options depend on what the assessment finds: a sound base with a shallow dip may suit a levelling repair or resurfacing coat, while a dip over soft ground needs that section excavated and rebuilt in compacted layers before any new surface goes down. Steps at joints can often be eased with a transition repair. Where the movement comes from roots or a failing drain, we will say so, because treating the surface without treating the cause is wasted money — and if excavation is needed we locate underground services carefully, use detectors where appropriate, and make clear that no scan guarantees what is below.

Limits and expectations

Ground moves, and we do not guarantee that a re-levelled area will never settle again — particularly where the original ground was poor or water still reaches it. What we do is rebuild properly, manage the water so it drains away rather than in, and tell you what to watch for. If the assessment shows widespread settlement across the drive, we will say plainly when patching stops making sense and replacement becomes the better investment; that larger project is quoted after survey.

Safety first

Uneven driveways are a genuine trip hazard, especially at steps between surfaces and at dips that hold water and ice in winter. Until repairs are done, keep the worst areas clear of parked vehicles where possible, since traffic accelerates both the sinking and the spreading. We will point out any defect that needs immediate attention when we visit.

Booking your assessment

You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit; the full cost of any repair is quoted and approved before we start, with materials quoted separately. When you get in touch, tell us the surface type, roughly when the unevenness appeared, whether it worsens after rain or frost, and whether it sits near trees or an old trench line. Photos from a distance and up close help us plan the right visit.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

An uneven driveway is more than an eyesore: it catches heels, wheels and water. Our visit is about the why rather than just the bump — we assess where the surface has moved, what pushed it, and whether the fix is a simple re-level or something deeper. You get a clear explanation and an honest quote for whatever the answer turns out to be.

What our customers say about our outdoor & exterior service

4.6 out of 5 from 10 reviews

Sorted the same day

Rang in the morning and they got to us in Wolverhampton by early afternoon. Very clear about what needed doing, what it would cost and what could wait. No pressure to add extras. Exactly the sort of tradesperson you want.

Job: Uneven Shed Base

Turned up when they said

Turned up in the window they promised, walked me through the options (turns out the previous installer had left the pipework awkward to get to), then cracked on. Everything was tested before they left. No mess, no drama, no surprise on the bill.

Job: Water-Damaged Patio

Good work, poor communication

Work itself was fine and tidy. Communication beforehand was patchy — I did not get the confirmation message and had to ring to check the slot. Would still use again.

Questions people ask about uneven driveway surface

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Can I fix an uneven driveway myself?

Lifting and re-laying a few block paving units is within reach of a capable DIYer with the right tools, and we will say so if that is all your drive needs. Concrete and tarmac dips are different — the materials need proper compaction and the dip often hides soft ground that a DIY fill will not cure. If the dip is deep, growing or holds water, have it assessed before you spend on materials.

What do you check when assessing an uneven driveway?

We measure how much and where the surface has moved, probe for soft or hollow spots in the base, check wheel paths, edges and any tree or trench lines, and trace how rainwater drains. The goal is to identify what moved and why, so the repair addresses the cause and not just the bump you can see.

Is an uneven driveway a safety issue?

It can be. Steps between surfaces and deep dips are genuine trip hazards, and dips that hold water become ice rinks in frost. If someone vulnerable uses the path or drive regularly, we would treat that as a priority. We will always flag any defect that needs urgent making safe during our visit.

Will the repair stop the driveway sinking again?

We rebuild the affected area properly and manage the water, which gives the repair the best realistic chance of lasting, but ground movement is a fact of life and no honest contractor guarantees against future settlement. If the original ground beneath is poor, we will tell you that the area may need monitoring, and we will explain what to look for if it starts moving again.

How much does it cost to level a driveway?

You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost of the repair is quoted and approved before we start, with materials quoted separately. Simple re-levelling is quoted on the visit; anything needing excavation or a full resurface is a larger project that we quote after survey.
