Find the Cause of Hot Water That Keeps Coming and Going in Knowle
We compare when the water turns cold with the cylinder, timer, thermostat, immersion and accessible pipework to narrow down intermittent supply.

Intermittent hot water means the system sometimes heats or delivers water and sometimes does not. The timing matters: a problem after several showers differs from hot water that vanishes at the same time every day, or from a tap that cools while others remain hot. Maintenance Men assesses cylinder and immersion arrangements, thermostats, timers, possible airlocks and accessible water-side pipework. Electrical checks are limited to work within competence. We never work on a gas boiler’s gas or combustion side; when symptoms indicate that scope, we explain and refer to a trusted Gas Safe registered partner.
Record the pattern before it changes
If possible, note the time hot water is available, how long it lasts, which outlets are affected and whether the cylinder has had time to reheat. Record any timer display changes and whether heating behaves normally, but do not alter wiring or remove covers. A household’s usage can temporarily draw down stored hot water, especially if the next heating period has not begun; that is different from a system that fails to recover at its usual times. Also mention recent electrical trips, plumbing work, unusual noises or a visible leak. This history helps distinguish a schedule issue from a temperature-control, heating or distribution fault.
Checks follow the system, not a guess
We first identify how the property makes and stores hot water. Depending on the setup, we inspect accessible timer and thermostat settings, the cylinder’s visible condition, relevant valves and pipework, and signs that heating is not reaching or remaining in the stored water. If an immersion heater is present, we can assess the appropriate accessible electrical controls within competence and safely isolate before any permitted work. We consider whether trapped air or a restriction could explain inconsistent delivery. A boiler may also heat water, but gas-side inspection and repair are not our work. We will not remove its casing or test gas components; concerns in that area are passed to our trusted Gas Safe partner.
Match the remedy to the evidence
A drifting or unsuitable schedule may call for a different remedy than a defective thermostat, immersion element, cylinder component or restricted branch. We explain which observation supports the recommendation and whether a part must be sourced. Compatibility depends on the make, model and existing arrangement, and parts are not assumed to be included. A larger cylinder or pipework alteration may need a separate quote and planned stages. If the fault cannot be confirmed during the initial assessment, we say what remains uncertain and what further test or information would help, rather than promise an outcome based on guesswork. No work beyond the agreed scope begins without your approval of the full cost.
Reduce disruption and avoid unsafe resets
Until assessed, plan around the system’s normal heating periods and avoid assuming that water will stay hot after heavy use. Do not repeatedly reset an electrical control that trips, touch exposed conductors or remove an immersion cover. If you find a leak near wiring, keep away; isolate only from a safe, dry, accessible switch. Watch for sudden temperature extremes, which can present a scald risk. If the intermittent supply is accompanied by a burning smell, water contacting electrical equipment or a serious leak, do not treat it as a routine inconvenience: take safe steps and seek prompt assistance.
Book with useful information
An initial appointment assesses the reported issue and agreed scope; intermittent faults may need observation or a further quoted visit if they do not occur while we are there. Book online and tell us the system type, typical times of failure, affected outlets, household usage pattern and any control display details. The booking fee is paid when booking. Labour is charged at an hourly rate that depends on how soon you need the visit, and we give the full cost for approval before work starts. Parts and materials can be identified and quoted separately. Any gas-side concern is referred, not repaired by Maintenance Men.
Book online and include when hot water works and when it fails so the assessment can focus on the pattern.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
Hot water that works one moment and disappears the next can be difficult to plan around. Intermittency may relate to a control schedule, thermostat, immersion, cylinder recovery or a restriction in the water side. We use the pattern of the fault to guide checks and recommend a proportionate next step, without guessing at a replacement part.
What our customers say about our heating & radiators service
5 out of 5 from 10 reviews
Fast, tidy and friendly
Booked the £220 booking-fee slot on Tuesday and got a message confirming the time the same morning. The cause was explained, the price agreed before any work started, and the job was done in about 46 minutes. Clean and tidy when they left.
Job: No Heating from Boiler
Turned up when they said
What I appreciated was being told what was actually wrong before anyone started. Sorted in under 46 minutes and the invoice matched the quote to the penny.
Job: Expansion Vessel Fault
Exactly what was quoted
I had put off sorting this for months because I expected a runaround. Quoted the booking fee plus hourly rate upfront, stuck to it, and actually found the underlying cause rather than just clearing the symptom. Worked neatly and hoovered up afterwards.
Job: Airlock in Hot Water System

Questions people ask about intermittent hot water
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Is there a safe check I can make first?
Note the timer display, hot-water schedule, affected taps and time the water turns cold. Avoid opening covers, touching wiring or repeatedly resetting a tripping control.
What do you inspect for an intermittent fault?
We relate the timing and affected outlets to the cylinder, accessible controls, immersion if fitted, thermostat, timer and water-side pipework. We explain any uncertainty and next steps.
Will you inspect a gas boiler’s burner or flue?
No. Gas and combustion work is outside our scope; if the evidence points there, we arrange referral to a trusted Gas Safe registered partner.
Why does hot water run out after some use but return later?
A cylinder can be depleted faster than it reheats, but a timer, thermostat, immersion or restriction may also contribute. The pattern and system checks help separate normal recovery from a fault.
What will the visit cost?
The booking fee is paid when booking; the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. We quote the full cost for approval before work starts, with materials or parts identified and quoted separately where needed.
