Why Radiators Stay Cold
Individual radiators misbehave for a small set of reasons, and each has a signature:
- Cold at the top, warm at the bottom — air collected in the radiator. Bleeding fixes it, but repeated air points to a cause worth finding.
- Cold at the bottom, warm at the top — sludge settled in the bottom of the panel. This needs flushing, not bleeding.
- Completely cold while others heat — a closed or stuck valve, a pinched pipe run, or the system badly balanced so the nearest radiators steal the flow.
- The nearest radiators scorching, the far ones tepid — classic poor balancing, where flow takes the easy path to the boiler and starves the far end of the circuit.
- All radiators failing together — the pump, the boiler's circulation or a valve serving the whole system. That is a different diagnosis from a single cold panel.
- Upstairs heating but not downstairs, or vice versa — often a zone valve, or an airlock or blockage affecting one floor's circuit.
Why Uneven Heating Costs You
An unbalanced or sludged system wastes heat and money. Rooms that never warm up get the thermostat turned up to compensate, driving the whole system harder; the boiler runs longer to satisfy a demand the radiators cannot deliver; and sludge continues to corrode pumps, valves and radiators from within. A system that heats evenly lets the thermostat do its job properly — rooms reach temperature sooner, the boiler cycles less, and bills reflect the heat you actually receive rather than the heat you generate.
What You Can Do Yourself
With the heating off and cooled, bleeding a radiator that is cold at the top is safe and often effective — open the bleed valve with a cloth ready, close it when water runs steadily, and check the boiler pressure afterwards, topping up if it has dropped. Check that both valves at each end of a cold radiator are actually open, including the lockshield on the return side, which sometimes gets closed accidentally during decorating. Beyond that, leave it to us: opening drain-off valves or dismantling anything on a pressurised system soaks floors fast.
How We Diagnose Uneven Heating
We map which radiators heat, how quickly, and to what temperature — a proper heat survey of the house in one heating run. We bleed and sample water where it is discoloured, check valve operation including thermostatic pins that have stuck closed, assess the pump's output, and look at how flow and return temperatures compare across the circuit. From that we can tell you whether the fix is air, valves, balancing, flushing, the pump — or a combination, and quote accordingly before starting.
The Repairs That Even Things Out
Bleeding and balancing are the everyday fixes: adjusting each radiator's lockshield so flow distributes properly instead of short-circuiting to the nearest panels. Stuck or failed valves get freed or replaced. Sludged systems get a power flush with a magnetic filter, and the water is dosed with inhibitor afterwards to slow future corrosion. Failing pumps are replaced with correctly sized models. Air repeatedly returning gets chased to its cause — a leaking automatic air vent, a draining expansion vessel or a corroded system. All of this is water-side work fully within our scope — we are not Gas Safe registered and never carry out gas work — and none of it involves gas-side components.
Keeping It Even Afterwards
We will leave you with a system that heats evenly and the knowledge to keep it that way: what the pressure should read, how to bleed a radiator safely, and what discoloured bleeding water means. A yearly glance at bleeding water colour is the cheapest early-warning system a heating system has.
Booking the System Survey
Tell us which radiators misbehave, whether they are cold at the top or bottom, and whether the problem is one panel or whole floors. Same-day visits may be available but are never promised. A booking fee is paid when you book, labour is charged hourly at a rate depending on how soon you need us, and the full cost of the agreed work is quoted and approved before we start. Parts and flushing chemicals are quoted separately. We cover the West Midlands.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
When some radiators heat and others do not, or panels stay warm at the bottom and cold at the top, the boiler is usually fine and the distribution is not. Air, sludge, balancing, valves and pump output are the usual culprits — all water-side problems we can diagnose and put right. We will find out why heat is not reaching the rooms it should and leave the whole system heating evenly.

Questions people ask about radiators not heating up
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Why is my radiator cold at the top but hot at the bottom?
Air has collected at the top of the panel. Bleeding it with the heating off and cool usually fixes it — close the bleed valve when water runs steadily and check the boiler pressure afterwards. If the same radiator needs bleeding every few weeks, air is entering the system somewhere and that cause needs finding.
Why is it cold at the bottom instead?
Cold at the bottom with warmth at the top means sludge — rust and debris settled in the lower half of the radiator, where water no longer flows. Bleeding will not help; the radiator needs flushing, and if several radiators are affected the whole system is usually worth a power flush.
What is balancing and why does my system need it?
Balancing adjusts each radiator's lockshield valve so hot water distributes evenly instead of taking the shortest route and starving the far end of the circuit. The tell-tale is radiators nearest the boiler scorching while distant ones barely warm. It needs a methodical survey of the whole system, which is why it is an engineer job.
Could a cold radiator mean a serious problem?
Usually it is air, sludge or valves rather than anything dangerous. But if all radiators go cold together, or the boiler trips on overheat while radiators stay cold, the circulation has failed system-wide and the boiler is overheating the water it cannot move — worth prompt attention. Any gas-side cause we find is referred to a trusted Gas Safe registered engineer we work closely with.
How much does this kind of repair cost?
A booking fee is paid when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. Bleeding and balancing are comparatively quick; a power flush is a bigger job quoted as a full price for your approval before it starts. Parts, valves and chemicals are identified and quoted separately.
