Plasterboard — drywall — is everywhere in modern homes: partition walls, stud walls, ceilings, and board on masonry in dot-and-dab construction. It is quick to build with but relatively easy to damage: a doorknob through the wall, a heavy item pulled off, a crack opening along a board joint, or board that has sagged or swelled after a leak. The good news is that drywall damage is also the most predictable kind to repair, because the material is uniform and the method is well established.

The types of damage we deal with

Holes are the classic problem, from fist-sized to larger broken areas. Joint cracks are the second — often along taped board joints, where the building has moved slightly or the tape has failed. There is also water-affected board, which may look stained but sound, and screws or nails that have popped proud of the surface as the frame moves. Each has a distinct repair, and each starts with finding out what is behind the board.

Assessment before cutting anything

We check how the board is fixed — screwed to timber or metal studs, or adhesive-bonded to masonry — because that dictates how a patch is supported. We locate the frame members, confirm board thickness so the patch matches, and look for the cause: a door that keeps hitting, a leak that needs fixing first, or movement that needs watching. Water-affected board is only repaired once the water problem is resolved, and if there is any suggestion the damage involves something structural, or older textured coatings we suspect could contain asbestos, we stop and refer rather than disturb.

We also mind what is inside the wall. Cables and pipes commonly run through stud walls, so before cutting we confirm safe zones and check carefully rather than assuming the middle of a board is empty.

The repair method

For a hole: the damaged area is cut back to a neat square or rectangle with clean edges that land on solid support wherever possible. A matching piece of board is cut and fitted — screwed to the frame, or held on a batten behind the opening if no frame is where it needs to be. The seams are taped with mesh or paper tape, filled with joint compound in coats, sanded back smooth, and finished flush with the surrounding wall.

For a joint crack: the failed tape and compound are raked out, the joint is re-taped and re-filled properly, and the surface is feathered out wide so the repair does not ridge. For popped screws: the fixing is driven home or replaced, and adjacent screws are checked so the problem does not simply move along the wall.

What a typical visit covers

The estimate is for the damaged areas you describe, repaired to a decorated-ready finish. Multiple large patches, ceiling work, or repairs needing scaffolding-scale access change the scope, and we will say so at assessment. Board, tape and compound are identified and quoted separately if the job needs them.

Finish and decoration

A finished drywall repair is smooth and flush, but it is not painted. Because even a well-blended patch can flash slightly differently under paint, the honest advice is usually to repaint the whole wall rather than touch up. Decorating is separate work we can quote if you want it — it is not automatically included.

Booking

Same-day visits may be available for straightforward patches. Book at maintenance-men.com: you pay a booking fee on booking, the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit, and the full cost is quoted and agreed with you before any work begins.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

Questions people ask about drywall repair

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Is a drywall patch a DIY job?

A small nail-hole is, and a fist-sized hole can be with patience — the tricky parts are supporting the patch properly, taping so the joint does not re-crack, and feathering the compound so it does not ridge. If the board is on a ceiling, has water damage, or you cannot find the frame, it is worth having it done properly.

How do you make sure there are no cables behind the board?

We work to known safe zones for wiring and pipework, check for sockets and switches above and below, and inspect before cutting. No check makes hidden services impossible, so where anything is uncertain we use careful, controlled opening rather than aggressive cutting, and we tell you what we found.

Will the repair crack again in the same place?

A properly taped and filled joint should hold, but if the original crack came from building movement or something still hitting the wall, the cause matters more than the repair. We look for the cause during assessment, and if movement is ongoing or structural we will tell you it needs a specialist opinion before patching.

Can you match the wall's texture after patching?

On a flat, painted wall a well-finished patch blends well, especially once the whole wall is repainted. Heavily textured finishes are harder to match exactly, and we will explain the realistic outcome before starting rather than promising a seamless result.

How is the work priced?

There is a booking fee paid when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how quickly you need the visit — notice affects the rate. The full cost of the agreed repair is quoted before work starts and you approve it. Board, tape, compound and any other materials are identified and quoted separately.
