What flat screen mounting actually involves
The phrase makes it sound simple, and in fairness the last ten minutes of the job are: hang the screen, lock it, check the level. Everything before that is where the work lives. A flat screen needs a bracket that matches its fixing points and weight, a wall that can carry the load, and fixings suited to whatever is actually inside the wall — which is often not what the room's paintwork suggests. Our job is to work through those questions in order, so the last ten minutes are boring in the best way.
The wall is the first question, not the last
Before anything is drilled we establish what we are fixing into. Solid brick, lightweight block, plasterboard on a timber frame and plasterboard on masonry all behave differently, and each needs a different approach. We probe the wall where the fixings will land, look for signs of concealed services — socket spurs, cable routes, pipework that feeds nearby radiators or bathrooms — and check for anything unusual such as a boxed-in flue or a dry-lined chimney breast. A detector helps us narrow things down, but it does not guarantee what is behind the surface, so we verify before drilling and never drill blind. If a section of wall will not give us a safe fixing, we will say so and look at repositioning rather than forcing it.
Choosing where the screen goes
Position is a decision worth ten minutes of conversation. Sitting height, sofa distance, window glare and what sits below the screen — a fireplace, a media unit, a radiator — all shape where it should go. A screen mounted over a working fire or above a hot radiator can struggle with heat, and a screen too high turns sofa nights into neck exercises. We agree the height and position with you, mark it out with a level, and only then reach for the drill.
How the fitting works
We check the bracket against the screen — its fixing pattern, weight rating and the fixings supplied — because brackets and hardware vary more than most people expect. If the hardware in the box does not suit the wall, we will say so rather than improvise, and quote suitable fixings separately. The wall plate is fixed with plugs or anchors matched to the substrate, checked for movement, and the screen is hung with its safety catches engaged. Small and medium screens are manageable for one installer; larger ones are heavy and awkward, and we may ask you to arrange a second pair of hands, which we flag when you book.
Cable choices that do not involve rewiring
A flat screen usually means power and signal leads that need to travel somewhere. The non-invasive answer is slim surface trunking, painted or matched to the wall, which routes cables neatly and can be removed later without damage. Where access has been agreed, cables can be routed through or behind surfaces — but only non-invasively, and never touching electrical wiring, which is outside our scope. We discuss the options before starting so you are not choosing mid-job.
After the screen is up
We check the mount feels solid, the screen hangs level and the tilt is where you want it, then clear away dust and packaging. Afterwards, treat any change as information: a screen drifting out of level, bracket play, or cracks around the fixings are all worth a quick check before they become a repair.
Getting booked in
Same-day slots may be available if you need the screen up quickly, and planned visits usually give more choice of time. You pay a booking fee on booking, labour is hourly with a rate that depends on how soon you need us, and the full cost is agreed and approved before work starts. Have the screen, bracket and any fixings ready unless we have agreed otherwise, and tell us the wall type and screen size when you book.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
Flat screens look light, but even a modest television is a lump of glass and metal that will not forgive careless fixings. We take the time to understand your wall before we drill, agree exactly where the screen should sit, and leave you with a tidy, level picture. No guesswork, no improvised anchors, no surprises.

Questions people ask about flat screen tv mounting
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Is a flat screen easier to mount than an older TV?
Usually yes, because flat screens are lighter and most take a standard bracket pattern, but the wall still decides how the job goes. A light screen on a flimsy plasterboard fixing is no safer than a heavy one, so the same assessment applies. The screen type makes the lift easier, not the fixing simpler.
What do you check before fixing the bracket?
We establish the wall construction and probe where the fixings will go, look for signs of concealed pipes and cables, and confirm the bracket suits the screen's fixing pattern and weight. Then we mark the position with a level, fix the wall plate with anchors matched to the substrate and check it for movement before hanging the screen.
Can you mount a TV over a fireplace?
Sometimes, but not by default. Over a working fire the screen can get hot and soot-stained, and chimney breasts hide flues and rubble that make drilling risky. We assess what is behind and around the spot first, and if it is not a safe or sensible fixing we will suggest an alternative position rather than carry on.
Do the cables go inside the wall?
Not unless access has been agreed and it can be done non-invasively. The standard approach is slim surface trunking that hides the leads down the wall and can be removed later without damage. We never touch electrical wiring, so any change to circuits is a job for an electrician, not this visit.
What will it cost?
There is a booking fee paid when you book, and hourly labour with a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. Before any work starts we quote the full job and you approve it. If the visit needs fixings or trunking that are not already in hand, we identify and quote those separately.
