The chair you will sit in for thousands of hours

An office chair is a mechanical object: gas lift, tilt mechanism, castors, armrests and a five-star base, all assembled under load. It is also usually the most disappointing part of a home office when done badly — a base fitted crosswise, a tilt lever that catches, castors that never quite clicked home. Assembly takes well under an hour when it is done right, and the difference is felt every working day.

What the build involves

The classic sequence is base, gas cylinder, seat and mechanism, back, then arms and castors — but the details differ between makers and they matter. The gas lift must be seated squarely into both the base hub and the mechanism, the tilt mechanism oriented so the levers fall where your hands expect them, the back bolted through the correct holes at the correct pitch, and the castors pressed home with a firm push until they click. Armrests are often handed, left and right, and swapping them is the most common self-assembly mistake we see.

Setting it up for you

Assembly is half the job; fit is the other half. We set seat height against your desk and your height, check the tilt tension and recline stops, position the armrests sensibly, and test the chair through its full range — swivel, tilt, height and every lever — before we pack up. If the chair is for a specific desk, tell us and we will match the height to it, because a good chair at the wrong height still makes an uncomfortable workstation.

Castors, floors and honest limits

Castor choice matters more than people expect: hard wheels skate and scar hard floors, softer treads are kinder on wooden and tiled surfaces, and deep carpet wants a taller castor or a mat. We fit what the chair comes with and will point out when the pairing looks wrong for your floor — replacing castors is a cheap, easy fix if you source them. If any part of the kit is missing or damaged, we assess what can reasonably be done and identify the manufacturer replacement part rather than improvise with something that does not fit, particularly on the gas lift, which should never be substituted.

Choices worth making early

A few chair decisions are easier made before the build than after: whether the armrests are fitted at all on models that allow it, which castors suit your floor, and whether any lumbar cushion or headrest in the box is wanted or best left off. Check the kit list before we arrive and say what you want — a chair built without arms is not easily converted afterwards on some models. If the chair is for a particular desk, tell us its height, because matching the two is part of setting the chair up properly rather than an afterthought.

Booking one chair or a batch

One chair is a short visit; a batch of matching chairs for a home office or a small business is often done within a single hourly-billed session, which is where booking several at once makes sense. Have the box near the room and tell us the chair model when you book. A booking fee is paid when you book, labour is hourly with the rate depending on how soon you need the visit, and the full cost is quoted for your approval before work starts. Same-day may be available, we are fully insured, and we cover the West Midlands.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

Questions people ask about office chair assembly

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Could I assemble an office chair myself?

Most chairs are genuinely a half-hour job with the instructions in front of you, and if that appeals, go for it. The parts people get wrong are the handed armrests, the tilt mechanism's orientation and the castors that never fully clicked in — small errors that annoy you daily. If you would rather it was simply done and set up to fit you, we will do both.

What do you check when assembling a chair?

We verify the parts against the manufacturer's list, seat the gas lift squarely into the base and mechanism, and orient the tilt mechanism so the levers sit where your hands expect them. Castors are pressed home until they click, and every fixing is tightened properly. Then we test the full range — height, tilt, swivel and levers — and set the chair up to fit you and your desk.

Is the gas lift safe to fit and use?

The gas lift is a sealed, self-contained component and it is safe when it is the correct part, undamaged, and seated properly into both the base and the mechanism. We check it is the maker's specified cylinder, seat it squarely, and never substitute or improvise with a part that was not designed for the chair. A damaged or incorrect cylinder should not be used at all.

Can you assemble several identical chairs in one visit?

Yes — after the first chair, each repeat goes quicker, so a batch for a home office or small business is usually done within one hourly-billed session. Tell us the number and model when you book so we can quote the whole visit for your approval. Booking the batch together costs less in fees and time than calling us out chair by chair.

How much does office chair assembly cost?

A booking fee is paid when you book, and labour is charged hourly — the rate depends on how soon you need the visit, so a little notice helps on a small job. The full cost is quoted and approved before work starts. If the chair needs a manufacturer replacement part, we identify it and that is quoted separately.
