Where the Power Goes When It Disappears

An outdoor socket sits at the end of a chain: consumer unit, protective devices, cable run, connection points, and the socket itself. Power can be lost at any link:

  • A tripped RCD or breaker — the most common cause, and often the only symptom of a fault elsewhere on the circuit. If the socket is dead, check this first.
  • A loose or corroded connection — outdoor connections corrode quietly, and one bad joint stops everything downstream of it while everything upstream seems fine.
  • A failed socket — the internal contacts and mechanisms wear out, especially on sockets exposed to weather for years.
  • A damaged cable run — clipped cable can be nicked by garden work, chewed by rodents, or cracked by frost; buried cable can be cut by a spade.
  • Water ingress — damp in a connection or fitting interrupts the supply and, more worryingly, creates earth leakage at the same time.

Why the Obvious Answer Isn't Always the Right One

It is tempting to assume the socket is broken and replace it — but if the socket was fine and the fault is a corroded joint halfway along the run, a new socket stays just as dead. Equally, resetting a tripped breaker without asking why it tripped can mask a damp fault that will trip again in the next rain. The value of a proper diagnosis is that the repair lands on the true cause, first time.

How We Trace the Missing Power

We start at the consumer unit: what has tripped, will it hold, and what does the circuit feed? Then we test along the run, checking the supply at each accessible point until we find where it stops — that boundary between live and dead is where the fault lives. Insulation and continuity testing pinpoints breaks and earth faults inside walls, soil or conduit without opening everything up. If the fault involves moisture or leakage rather than a simple break, we find the wet point too, because restoring power into a damp circuit is not a repair. You will get a clear explanation of what failed and a firm price before we fix it.

How We Restore It

The repair matches the cause. A corroded or burnt connection is remade in a proper weather-rated enclosure. A failed socket is replaced with a quality weatherproof (IP-rated) unit with sound seals and glands. A damaged cable section is repaired or replaced and protected against a repeat of whatever damaged it. If moisture caused the loss, the entry point is sealed or the fitting replaced, and the circuit is dried and tested before power returns. Before we leave, the socket is proven working under a real load and the protective devices are checked.

Aftercare and Prevention

After the repair, keep the lid closed when the socket is idle, and take note of what we found — a socket that died from a garden spade tells you where not to dig, and one that died from damp tells you to watch that fitting after storms. If the socket dies again in wet weather, that is a pattern, not a coincidence, and worth a prompt call.

When to Call Us

Book a routine visit when the socket is dead and the breaker is fine, or when you have reset one trip and want the cause checked. Book urgently if the socket is dead along with burning smells, scorch marks or visible damage, or if the RCD will not reset at all — in that case leave it off and call us the same day.

Book Your Outdoor Socket Diagnosis Today

We cover the West Midlands and trace lost outdoor supplies as everyday work, with appointments around your week and same-day slots where available. Call or book online and tell us whether the breaker tripped, whether the socket died after bad weather, and what you use the socket for. We will bring the test gear to find the break and the parts to close it.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

No power at an outdoor socket can mean a tripped breaker, a tired socket, a loose connection, or a break in the cable somewhere you cannot see. Guessing wastes time; tracing does not. We follow the supply step by step from the consumer unit to the socket, find exactly where it stops, and repair that point properly.

What our customers say about our electrical service

4.6 out of 5 from 11 reviews

Does what it says on the tin

No complaints about the work itself — clear explanation, sensible advice, fair price. Booking online was easy enough once I found the right job page.

Job: Smoke Alarm Replacement

Fixed it, but took longer than expected

Work itself was fine and tidy. Communication beforehand was patchy — I did not get the confirmation message and had to ring to check the slot. Would still use again.

Job: Flickering Outdoor Lights

Turned up when they said

Third time we have used Maintenance Men, and the same experience each time: agreed price, proper explanation, job done in one visit. The hourly rate is fair for the standard of work.

Questions people ask about no power to outdoor socket

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

I've checked the consumer unit and nothing has tripped — what then?

Then the break is somewhere between the board and the socket: a corroded joint, a failed socket or a damaged cable. Those faults don't show at the consumer unit, which is why we test along the run instead of swapping parts at random. Tracing usually finds the fault within the visit.

Can I test the socket myself?

You can sensibly check whether the breaker or RCD has tripped, and try a known-good appliance or lead. Beyond that, it involves opening weatherproof fittings that may have live parts inside, so leave the testing to us. Tell us what you have already tried — it narrows things down and saves time.

If the RCD tripped, is that dangerous?

A single trip after a storm is often the RCD doing its job on some damp getting in, and it may reset cleanly. But an RCD that trips again immediately, or trips repeatedly in wet weather, indicates a real leakage fault that should be found before you keep using the socket. When in doubt, leave it off and ask us.

What will the repair cost?

You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how quickly you need us. The full cost of the work is quoted before we start, so you approve it before any tools come out.

Could you upgrade the socket while you're there?

Often, yes. If we are replacing the socket anyway, it is a good moment to fit a model with extra features you might want — switched and lidded units, USB options, or a better position with a weather hood. Mention it when you book and we will quote for it as part of the same visit.
