Outdoor lighting leads a harder life than anything inside your home. Rain, frost, summer heat, salt-laden wind — a fitting that would last decades indoors can be finished in a few winters outside. When yours stops working, the cause is usually water where water shouldn't be, but not always, and the diagnosis is worth doing properly before anything is replaced.
Why Outdoor Lights Fail
Water ingress tops the list, and it gets in through every gap you'd never notice: perished gaskets behind the lens, cable entries that were never sealed properly, hairline cracks in the casing from frost, fixings screwed through the housing that opened a path straight into the electronics. Once inside, water corrodes terminals and lamp holders, and the light dies — often in autumn, after a summer of slow ingress, which is why outdoor lights seem to fail all at once when the wet weather returns.
The sensor is the second regular culprit: PIR motion detectors fail with age, and a light that no longer responds to movement — but glows constantly, or never at all — is often a sensor problem, not a light problem. Then come the ordinary causes: a lamp that's simply expired, a switch or timer indoors that's failed, and the outdoor circuit itself, whose joints and connections are exposed to damp in ways indoor wiring never is.
Checks Before You Call
Two quick observations help enormously. First, does the light behave at all — constant glow, no response to movement, dead entirely? Each pattern points somewhere different. Second, does your outdoor lighting have its own switch or breaker indoors, and has that tripped? Outdoor circuits trip readily when damp gets into a connection, and a reset that holds is useful information; one that immediately trips again means water is somewhere it shouldn't be, and the circuit should stay off.
Don't open the fitting's casing yourself — outdoor fittings hold damp, corroded terminals that are live whenever the circuit is on, and wet electrical connections are precisely the wrong thing to touch.
How We Diagnose It
The engineer starts with the pattern you've described, then tests the supply to the fitting and works through the chain: switch or sensor, terminals, lamp holder, lamp. Opening the fitting tells the story quickly — corrosion, water traces and mineral staining show exactly where the ingress happened and how long it's been happening. We also check how the cable enters the fitting and how it's routed outside, because the commonest design flaw in outdoor lighting is a cable entry that lets water run down the cable and straight into the housing.
If the light proves healthy, the fault may be upstream: the isolator switch, a junction in the outside circuit, or moisture in a connection box — all standard territory for us.
The Repair
Where the fitting is sound and the ingress was minor, the fix is thorough drying, cleaning corroded contacts, remaking connections and re-sealing every entry point properly — gaskets, gland fittings and cable routes arranged so water can't track in. Where the fitting is corroded through or its electronics are finished, replacement is the honest answer, and we fit a properly rated unit with the entries sealed the way they should have been the first time. Failed sensors are replaced and re-aimed, and where the outdoor circuit itself has damp-affected joints, those are remade in enclosures actually designed for outside use.
Keeping It Working Afterwards
The difference between an outdoor light that lasts years and one that dies each winter is mostly sealing and siting. We'll show you where yours was vulnerable and what's changed, and mention anything worth knowing — a lens gasket that will need replacing in a few years, a PIR that's reached the age where replacement is routine. Outdoor fittings aren't fit-and-forget, but with the entries sealed and the right rating for the exposure, they come close.
When to Call Us
Book when an outside light stops working, when it glows constantly or ignores movement, when its breaker trips and won't hold, or when you can see water or corrosion inside the lens. A tripping outdoor circuit is a same-day call — damp in outdoor connections worsens with every wet spell.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
An outside light that worked last winter and not this one has almost always let water in somewhere, or its sensor has given up after years of weather. We diagnose the light, its wiring and its mounting, dry out and seal what can be saved, and replace what can't — so it stays working through the next wet season too.

Does what it says on the tin
No complaints about the work itself — clear explanation, sensible advice, fair price. Booking online was easy enough once I found the right job page.
Job: Smoke Alarm Replacement
Fixed it, but took longer than expected
Work itself was fine and tidy. Communication beforehand was patchy — I did not get the confirmation message and had to ring to check the slot. Would still use again.
Job: Flickering Outdoor Lights

Questions people ask about outdoor light not working
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
What does an outdoor light repair cost?
Booking carries a booking fee, then labour is hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need us. Once the engineer has diagnosed whether the light can be sealed and saved or needs replacing, you get the full quote — parts included — and approve it before work begins.
Can I fix my outdoor light myself?
Reseating the lamp or checking the indoor switch is fair game. Opening the fitting is not: outdoor housings hold damp and corroded terminals that are live whenever the circuit is on, and water plus electricity at head height on a ladder is a poor combination. Leave the diagnosis and the sealing to us.
What will the engineer check?
The supply to the fitting, the sensor and switch chain, the condition inside the housing — water traces, corrosion, perished gaskets — the cable entry and its routing, and the state of the outdoor circuit's connections. The pattern of how the light has been behaving usually points to the answer before the cover even comes off.
Is a failed outdoor light dangerous?
It can be, because the usual cause — water in the housing — doesn't just stop the light, it sits on live connections. A fitting that trips its breaker repeatedly, shows corrosion inside the lens, or smells warm deserves prompt attention, and the circuit should stay switched off until we've been. A simply expired lamp is benign, but you can't tell which you have without opening it.
Should I replace the fitting or repair it?
It depends on the corrosion. Mild ingress with sound electronics dries out, cleans up and re-seals perfectly well — a genuine repair. A housing that's corroded through, electronics that have been soaked repeatedly, or a design whose cable entry can't be sealed properly are honest replacement cases, and we'll say which yours is with reasons rather than defaulting to the expensive answer.
