Is the outage local or inside the home?
First look at what has lost power. If neighbours are also affected, or the street is dark, the issue may be with the electricity network rather than your installation. If only your home or selected circuits are off, the consumer unit may show a tripped breaker, RCD or main switch. Do not assume that a dark room means there is no power at the unit: some circuits can remain live while others are disconnected. Avoid touching exposed conductors or damaged equipment.
Common reasons a circuit goes dead
A protective device may have tripped after an overload, short circuit or earth-leakage fault. A loose or heat-damaged connection, failed breaker, damaged cable or a problem at a socket or appliance can also interrupt supply. Where the entire home is affected, a main-switch issue or a fault affecting several circuits may be involved. The location and extent of the outage, together with any recent work, smells, noises or visible signs, helps guide the checks but cannot confirm the cause on its own.
How we find the loss of power
The electrician checks the consumer unit for the position and condition of its switches, then establishes which circuits are affected. They inspect relevant accessories and carry out electrical tests to trace whether the break is at a protective device, a connection, an appliance or the wiring. If the area is unsafe, wet or visibly damaged, they keep it isolated while assessing the next step. You receive an explanation of the cause and proposed work before we begin chargeable repairs.
Getting power back without guesswork
The right repair depends on the fault found. A defective breaker may need replacement, a failed connection may need repair, or an appliance may have to stay disconnected until it is safe to use. Where a cable fault is involved, the electrician will explain the affected route and options rather than simply resetting the unit. Following repair, the relevant circuits are tested and supply is restored only when the checks support doing so.
What to do while power is off
Keep the fridge and freezer doors closed, and use a torch rather than candles. Unplug sensitive devices if power is fluctuating, and avoid repeatedly operating a switch that trips. If the unit smells hot or burnt, is sparking, or has water around it, do not approach it; only switch off power if the control can be reached safely without entering the affected area. Tell us whether the outage is total or limited to particular rooms when arranging the visit.
What the visit involves
We begin by establishing how much of the property is without power and whether any devices in the consumer unit have moved. The electrician checks the unit and follows the dead circuit using appropriate tests, taking account of any recent damage or work. Once the fault is located, you hear what the repair involves and its cost before work starts. The repaired circuit is checked before normal use resumes.
Aftercare and safety
A partial or complete loss of power can sometimes point to a fault that is not visible from the front of the consumer unit. Do not open the unit or probe sockets to investigate. If the power has failed alongside heat, burning odour or sparks, keep clear, isolate the supply only if safe, and request urgent help.
Book your electrical visit
Book a home electrical inspection if the outage is confined to your property. Tell us which rooms or circuits are affected and whether the consumer-unit switches have moved.
Further details for your electrician
The electrician will establish whether the interruption is at the incoming supply, the main switch or a downstream circuit. Those parts have different responsibilities and require different next steps. A neighbouring property with power does not by itself prove the home installation is at fault, but it helps narrow the possibilities. Keep a note of any lights that flickered or devices that shut down just before the outage.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

What our customers say about our electrical service
4.6 out of 5 from 11 reviews
Does what it says on the tin
No complaints about the work itself — clear explanation, sensible advice, fair price. Booking online was easy enough once I found the right job page.
Job: Smoke Alarm Replacement
Fixed it, but took longer than expected
Work itself was fine and tidy. Communication beforehand was patchy — I did not get the confirmation message and had to ring to check the slot. Would still use again.
Job: Flickering Outdoor Lights
Turned up when they said
Third time we have used Maintenance Men, and the same experience each time: agreed price, proper explanation, job done in one visit. The hourly rate is fair for the standard of work.

Questions people ask about no power from fuse box
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Can I check anything before booking an electrician?
You can see whether the outage affects neighbours and look at the consumer unit switches without removing its cover. Do not touch wet or damaged equipment, and leave any switch that trips again turned off.
How will the electrician diagnose the problem?
They will map the affected area, inspect the consumer unit and use electrical tests to trace the interruption. The checks help distinguish a supply issue, a protective device fault and a problem on the home wiring.
Is a loss of power an electrical emergency?
It depends on the signs and what has failed. Sparks, burning smells, unusual heat, water or exposed wiring need urgent attention; a wider network outage should be reported to the electricity network operator.
What if only some rooms have lost power?
That often means one or more circuits have tripped or developed a fault, rather than the whole property supply failing. The electrician can identify which circuit is affected and test it.
How is the work priced?
You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how quickly you need us. The full cost of the work is quoted before we start, so you approve it before any tools come out.
