An oven that overheats is one of the few appliance faults where the inconvenience and the safety risk arrive together. Food burns on settings that used to be reliable, the cavity runs hotter than the dial says, safety cut-outs operate, or surrounding cabinet surfaces get hotter than they should. None of that should be ignored, and none of it should be tested with your dinner. Proper diagnosis comes first.
Stop using it, then think
If your oven is overheating, switch it off at the isolator and leave it off until it has been assessed. Continuing to use an overheating oven risks more than ruined food: overheating stresses wiring, seals and surrounding cabinetry, and repeated cut-out operation means the protection systems are already being exercised. An oven that has tripped its thermal cut-out or the household electrics while running hot is telling you something concrete, and it should not be reset and forgotten.
What causes an oven to overheat
In electric ovens the usual suspects are a thermostat or electronic temperature sensor that has failed in the dangerous direction, stuck or welded contacts in a thermostat, an element being fed continuously when it should cycle, or a control board fault that has lost its grip on the temperature. Mechanical thermostats in particular can fail closed, meaning the heating runs unchecked. A related symptom, food burning on the top while the middle lags, can also reflect element or fan problems, which the diagnosis separates. In a gas oven, temperature control involves gas-side components that only a Gas Safe registered engineer may touch; we never carry out gas work and would refer that portion to a trusted Gas Safe partner we work closely with.
What our diagnosis covers
With the appliance safely isolated we test the thermostat or sensor electrically, examine the elements and how they are switched, inspect the wiring for heat damage, and assess the control board where fitted. We also ask about the specific behaviour: does it overheat from cold, only at high settings, or after long runs? Does anything trip? Do surrounding surfaces get hot? Those details distinguish a thermostat drifting high from an element being fed continuously, and they matter for the repair. Every finding is explained to you plainly.
The repair and the honest conversation
A failed thermostat or sensor is replaced with the correct model-specific part, quoted separately from labour. Where heat damage is found in wiring or connections, that damage is repaired properly, because an overheating event leaves evidence that must be addressed, not just the component that triggered it. Where the fault involves a control board on an older oven, we will give you a straight comparison of repair versus replacement before you commit to anything. The full cost, including parts, is approved by you before work starts.
Why this is not a wait-and-see fault
Unlike a temperamental seal or an inaccurate dial, overheating has a direction of travel: components fail further, connections degrade and the margins shrink. We would rather diagnose it now, while the fault is contained, than meet it later as scorched cabinetry or a tripped kitchen circuit that will not reset. If you are in any doubt about whether your oven is genuinely overheating, the diagnosis answers that too; sometimes the finding is a sensor within tolerance and a shelf-position issue instead.
Booking your diagnosis
Contact us with your postcode, the oven's make, model and fuel type, and what exactly happens: which settings, how hot, what trips. We will arrange a prompt visit, test the system thoroughly and quote any work for your approval before beginning.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
An oven that overheats is more than an inconvenience: scorched food, tripped safety cut-outs and hot surrounding surfaces all point to a control system that is losing its grip. The sensible sequence is stop using it, get it diagnosed properly, and only then decide on the repair. That is exactly what this visit provides.

Questions people ask about oven overheating risk
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Can I keep using an oven that overheats if I watch it closely?
We would advise against it entirely. Overheating stresses wiring, seals and surrounding surfaces, and repeated cut-out operation shows the protection is already being used. Switch it off at the isolator and have it diagnosed before further use.
What will you check during the visit?
The thermostat or temperature sensor, how the elements are switched, the wiring and connections for heat damage, and the control board where fitted. You get a clear explanation of the cause, and any repair is quoted in full before work starts.
My gas oven overheats. What can you do?
Gas oven temperature control sits on the gas side, which only a Gas Safe registered engineer may work on, and we never carry out gas work. We can explain what the symptoms suggest and refer you to a trusted Gas Safe partner we work closely with.
Is overheating always a thermostat fault?
Not always. A stuck element feed, a control board fault or even an airflow problem can produce similar symptoms, which is why testing rather than assuming matters. The diagnosis identifies the real component before any part is ordered or replaced.
What will it cost?
You pay the booking fee when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit, as shorter notice costs more. Parts are identified and quoted separately, the full cost is approved by you before work begins, and there are no hidden charges.
