Uneven heating is a fault that announces itself through your food: sauces catching on one side, stir-fries cooking in patches, a pan that boils on one edge and simmers on the other. It's easy to blame the pan, and sometimes that's right — but a degrading element or connection produces the same symptom, and it doesn't stay stable.
Appliance causes worth knowing
On an electric or ceramic hob, each zone's element can degrade unevenly with age — part of the element still heats while a section has failed, producing a hotspot pattern that shows itself through the glow. Connectors and terminals can also develop resistance through years of thermal cycling, feeding less power than the setting demands. Control faults can make a zone cycle power unpredictably, so the pan heats in waves rather than steadily. Induction hobs can do the same through ageing coil electronics or sensor problems, sometimes cutting power mid-cook in ways that look random.
The cookware explanation — and how to rule it in or out
A warped, dented or cheaply made pan base spreads heat badly on any hob, including a perfectly healthy one. The DIY test is simple: try a known-good, flat-based pan on the suspect zone, and try the usual pan on a different zone. If the problem follows the pan, the pan is the answer. If it stays with the zone, book a diagnosis rather than replacing good cookware one piece at a time.
What our engineer does
We test the suspect zone under load with suitable cookware, measuring how output behaves across settings and over time, then check the element, connections and control path feeding it. On induction models we also examine the zone electronics and sensor behaviour. Diagnosis finishes before any repair is priced, and you get the findings in plain language: what's degrading, why, and what the realistic options cost.
Repair decisions made honestly
A failed or partial element is usually a straightforward repair with the correct part for your model, quoted separately from labour and fitted only with your approval. Connection faults are repaired economically. Where the fault sits in a control board on an older hob, we'll compare the repair cost against replacement and tell you plainly which makes sense — including quoting to install a new hob if that's your choice.
Safety while you wait
Keep using the working zones, but watch the faulty one: burning smells, scorch marks around the zone on the glass, or the consumer unit tripping are signs to stop using the hob entirely and switch it off at the isolator. Don't dismantle anything — internal voltages are dangerous even with the hob off.
And a scope note for completeness: if your appliance is gas and the complaint is uneven or lazy flames, that's combustion and the gas side of the appliance. Maintenance Men is not Gas Safe registered and doesn't carry out gas work; those faults go to a trusted Gas Safe registered engineer, and any suspected gas smell goes straight to the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999.
Oven gloves and honest expectations
One caveat worth stating: a zone heating slightly unevenly across its whole surface is within normal tolerance for some hobs, particularly older ceramic models — no element heats with laboratory uniformity. The fault we look for is the clear pattern: one side hot, one side cool, or heat that pulses and fades. Testing under load with measurement tells the difference between 'this hob was never perfect' and 'this element is failing', and we'll give you whichever answer is true rather than whichever one leads to a bigger job.
Booking
Tell us the hob's brand and model, which zone misbehaves, how the unevenness shows itself, and the result of the pan-swap test if you've tried it. Book by phone or website: the booking fee is paid when you book, the hourly rate depends on how soon you need us, and no repair starts until you've approved the full quote.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
Pans that cook lopsided, one side of a pan browning while the other stays cool, or a zone that fluctuates — uneven heating has a handful of causes, from failing elements to mismatched cookware. We test the hob properly so you're not living with a fault that's quietly getting worse.

Questions people ask about uneven heating hob
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Why does one side of my pan cook faster?
On electric and ceramic hobs, uneven heating often means a degrading element or a poor connection rather than the pan — though warped pan bases cause it too. Testing the element under load distinguishes appliance faults from cookware problems.
Is uneven heating dangerous?
It can indicate an element or connection that's failing, and faults like these sometimes worsen into overheating. If you also notice burning smells, scorch marks on the glass or tripping, stop using the affected zone and book an assessment.
Can cookware really cause this?
Yes — a warped or dented pan base sits unevenly and heats unevenly on any hob. Testing the same zone with a good flat-based pan is a useful check before assuming the hob is at fault.
What if my hob is gas?
Uneven or weak gas flames involve combustion and the gas side of the appliance, which Maintenance Men does not work on — we'd refer you to a trusted Gas Safe registered engineer, and treat any suspected gas smell as a 0800 111 999 emergency.
What does the visit cost?
A booking fee is paid when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the engineer. After diagnosis, any repair is quoted in full and approved by you before work starts, with parts priced separately.
