There's a particular kind of silence to a hob that won't turn on at all — no lights, no display, no response from any control. The comfort is that a completely dead appliance narrows the problem down: power isn't arriving or isn't being accepted. Our job is to find which link in that chain has failed and tell you, with a price, how to put it right.

Starting outside the appliance

Hobs are normally fed through a dedicated isolator switch and a cooker circuit at the consumer unit, so the first checks happen outside the hob. An isolator can fail internally while looking perfectly normal; a breaker can trip without being obvious; wiring or terminals behind the hob can degrade over years of heating cycles. If the fault is in the supply, fixing it is often quicker and cheaper than replacing the appliance, which is exactly why diagnosis comes before assumptions.

What fails inside the hob

If the supply tests healthy, the fault is inside: an internal fuse, damaged wiring, or most commonly a failed control board or power section. On modern hobs the electronics do a lot of work — touch controls, displays, zone electronics — and when the board fails the whole appliance can appear dead even though every element is fine. Board repairs are sometimes worthwhile; on older or budget hobs the replacement cost can rival a new hob, and we'll give you that comparison honestly rather than pushing a repair that doesn't add up.

What the engineer actually does

The visit is systematic: confirm the isolator and circuit, verify voltage at the hob's connection point, then test the hob's internal supply path and electronics. Diagnosis is completed and explained before any repair is agreed, so you're deciding on facts, not guesses. If parts are needed we identify the correct ones for your model and quote them separately from labour.

Safety notes that matter here

A dead hob invites curiosity, and that's the risk. Don't remove the hob or open its casing to look for the fault — the supply behind an electric hob can deliver a severe or fatal shock, and it doesn't behave like a plug you can simply pull out. If the hob died in the middle of burning smells, sparking, or a consumer-unit trip, stop and leave it isolated at the wall switch until assessed.

If your hob is gas, the electrical side — ignition and controls — can still be assessed within our electrical competence, but burners, valves and the gas supply are strictly Gas Safe territory. Maintenance Men doesn't carry out gas work; for gas-side faults we refer to trusted Gas Safe registered engineers.

A word about isolators and their age

Isolator switches live in greasy, steamy corners and fail more often than most people expect — sometimes in ways that look exactly like a dead hob. If diagnosis points there, the repair is usually quick and inexpensive, and it also removes a component that would have failed eventually regardless. We'll show you what we found and why, because understanding that the fault was in a £-part-and-an-hour of work rather than the appliance is worth the visit on its own.

Booking and what to tell us

Contact us with the hob's brand, model and type, when it went dead, and anything that happened around the same time — a trip at the consumer unit, a smell, a power cut, or other appliances misbehaving. Those details often shorten the diagnosis considerably. Booking is by phone or the website: we confirm the appointment, take the booking fee at that point, and the hourly rate depends on how soon you need the engineer. Any repair found during diagnosis is quoted in full and only starts with your approval.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

1

Book the slot

Choose the window that suits you and pay the booking fee. That holds your place in the diary.

2

We diagnose on site

The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.

3

You approve, we work

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

A completely dead hob usually means the appliance isn't receiving power or its controls have failed, rather than anything wrong with the cooking zones themselves. Our engineer works from the supply inward to find the exact break in the chain and tells you the cost of putting it right before any repair begins.

Questions people ask about hob not turning on

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

What should I check before booking?

Check that the hob isolator switch is on and that nothing else on the cooker circuit has tripped at the consumer unit. If the isolator and breaker are fine and the hob is still dead, the fault is inside the appliance or its wiring and needs an engineer.

Why would a hob go completely dead?

Likely causes include a tripped or faulty isolator, a blown internal fuse, damaged wiring or terminals, or a failed control board or display. An engineer tests each in order to find where the supply stops.

Is a dead hob dangerous?

A dead hob is usually not dangerous in itself, but if it went dead during burning smells, sparking or a trip, stop using it and leave it isolated. Never open the hob casing — the internal supply can cause severe shocks even when the hob appears off.

Can you help if my hob is gas?

Gas hobs still need electricity for ignition and controls, and we can assess those electrical parts. The gas side — burners, valves and supply — is gas work we don't do, so we'd refer that to a trusted Gas Safe registered engineer and explain why.

How is this priced?

You pay a booking fee at the time of booking, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon the visit is needed. Diagnosis comes first; any repair is quoted in full approved by you before work starts, with parts quoted separately.
