How fridge temperature control works
In simple terms, the appliance measures the cabinet temperature and switches cooling on and off to hold your set point. On older fridges that measurement is a mechanical thermostat; on modern ones it is an electronic sensor feeding a control board, which also drives the fans and the defrost cycle. Because the components differ in age and design, the repair price differs too — one of the reasons a structured diagnosis saves money over guesswork and wrongly ordered parts. A fault anywhere in that chain produces the same everyday symptom: food too warm, or frozen salad, regardless of the setting.
The failing component is what differs. A worn thermostat stops switching or switches at the wrong point. A drifting sensor reports the wrong temperature, so the board cools too much or too little. A failing board behaves erratically across the whole appliance — affecting lights, fans and defrost as well as temperature.
What we test on the visit
The engineer confirms the settings first, then tests the actual cabinet temperature against the set point and checks whether the compressor responds correctly to changes. We test the thermostat or sensor electrically, trace the wiring, and on electronic models look at the control board's behaviour across its functions. Frost patterns and fan behaviour give us further clues about whether the control fault is the primary problem or a symptom.
If everything points instead to the sealed refrigerant system — cooling components healthy but the system not delivering cold — we say so plainly, because sealed-system work including any refrigerant recharge is specialist work we do not carry out.
Reading the symptoms before we arrive
A few patterns help us prepare. If only one shelf or drawer runs wrong, airflow is more likely than controls. If the fridge freezes food at every setting, a thermostat or sensor fault is probable. If the display shows odd figures, the defrost cycle misbehaves and lights flicker together, the control board is the suspect. Note what you observe — it shortens the diagnosis. Write down the settings you have tried and what changed, because that history rules causes out quickly.
Repairs we typically carry out
Thermostats and temperature sensors are commonly replaced and quoted on the spot once identified. Control boards are model-specific and more expensive: we identify the correct board, quote it separately, and confirm availability with the manufacturer before ordering — some boards for discontinued models are no longer available, which changes the repair-versus-replacement conversation. We will give you the honest comparison with a replacement appliance where the part situation makes repair unattractive.
Safety and DIY limits
Checking that settings have not been knocked, and comparing the cabinet temperature with a fridge thermometer, are safe and useful. Everything else — testing sensors, opening the control housing, handling boards — should be left to an engineer, because components there can hold charge and a misdiagnosed board is an expensive mistake. If the appliance is tripping the electrics or smells hot, switch it off at the socket and tell us when booking. Take a photo of the model plate before the visit; it speeds up part identification considerably.
Booking your visit
Call or use our contact form with the brand and model number, where the model plate is — usually inside the cabinet — and a description of the behaviour: freezing food, never reaching temperature, or erratic. Mention the appliance's age, since it affects part availability. A booking fee is paid when booking, the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit, and the full cost is quoted and approved before any work begins.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
When the dial or display is set right but the cabinet refuses to behave, the temperature control side is usually at fault — a thermostat, a sensor, or the electronics behind them. These faults need proper testing rather than guesswork, because several components look identical from outside. Our visit finds the failing part and quotes the repair before anything is done.
What our customers say about our home appliances service

Exactly what was quoted
What I appreciated was being told what was actually wrong before anyone started. Sorted in under 27 minutes and the invoice matched the quote to the penny.
Job: Tumble Dryer Not Starting Cycle
Good job, slightly late
Solid work. Hourly rate feels fair for the amount of work involved and everything was tested before they left. Would book again.
Job: Toaster Not Working
No mess left behind
Really straightforward. It had been bothering us for weeks; diagnosed properly, fixed the same visit, and the price was exactly what was explained when booking. Can not fault it.

Questions people ask about fridge temperature control fault
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
My fridge freezes food on the lowest setting — why?
That pattern usually points to a thermostat or temperature sensor switching cooling on when it should not, rather than a setting problem. We test those components during the visit.
Can a faulty control board cause other problems too?
Yes — the board often drives fans, lights and defrost as well as temperature, so erratic behaviour across several functions suggests the board. We check all of it before recommending a board replacement.
What if the control board is no longer available?
Some boards for older or discontinued models are discontinued too. We confirm availability with the manufacturer before ordering and will give you an honest repair-versus-replacement comparison if the part cannot be sourced.
Can I test the thermostat myself?
A fridge thermometer to confirm what the cabinet is actually doing is safe and useful. Electrical testing of the thermostat, sensor or board should be left to an engineer.
How much does it cost?
A booking fee is paid when you book, and labour is charged at an hourly rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost is quoted and approved before any work starts; parts such as thermostats, sensors or boards are quoted separately.
