Why doors stop closing properly

Doors are simple mechanisms with a handful of failure points. Hinges wear, work loose or drop out of alignment, letting the door sag so it no longer meets the cabinet squarely. Seals stiffen, tear, or pack down flat, so the magnetic grip weakens and the door bounces instead of latching. A cabinet that is not level — often after a floor or a kitchen refit — tilts the door geometry too.

Then there is load: a shelf packed too deep, a drawer pushed slightly out of true, or a bottle leaning against the door can hold it ajar by a few millimetres, which is all it takes for warm air to leak in continuously. On french-door and side-by-side models, misaligned doors can also stop each other from closing.

What we check on the visit

The engineer works down that list in order: the level and footing of the cabinet, the hinge pins and fixings on each door, the condition and grip of the seals all the way round, and how the doors behave when released — a door that falls open or stays ajar from half-shut tells us a lot. We also look at the internal layout and how the appliance is loaded.

Where the door closes but the seal leaks, we test the seal's grip and look for twisted or torn sections. If the underlying problem is deeper — a warped cabinet or a door that has been dropped — we will tell you honestly what can and cannot be corrected.

Quick checks before we arrive

With the fridge unplugged and pulled out far enough to work on, check it stands level with a spirit level across the top, and adjust the front feet if not. Look at the seal for visible tears, mould or flattened sections, and clean it with warm soapy water — sometimes stiffness is just grime. Empty the door bins of heavy clutter and try closing the door on a sheet of paper: it should pull out with noticeable resistance all the way round. If the paper slides freely anywhere, that is the leaking spot. Empty the door bins of heavy bottles first when testing, because a full bin alone can hold a healthy door ajar by a few millimetres.

Repairs we typically carry out

Hinge adjustment and replacement, seal replacement, and re-levelling the cabinet cover most cases and are quoted on the spot once we confirm the parts. Seals and hinges are model-specific, so we identify the correct components and quote them separately, with availability depending on the manufacturer. On french-door models we align both doors together so they meet properly. If the door or cabinet itself is damaged beyond adjustment, we will say so and discuss your options rather than selling an adjustment that will not hold.

Why it matters beyond the door

A door that seals properly keeps the temperature stable, stops the compressor overworking, prevents frost build-up around the seal line, and keeps your electricity bill down. It is one of the highest-value small repairs a fridge can have. Fixing it early also stops frost forming along the seal line, which otherwise damages the gasket further.

Booking your visit

Call or use our contact form with the brand and model number, which door misbehaves, and how it misbehaves — swings open, bounces shut, needs pushing, or seals poorly. Mention whether it started after a move or a clean, which often points at the hinges or seal. A booking fee is paid when booking, the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit, and the full cost is quoted and approved before any work begins.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

1

Book the slot

Choose the window that suits you and pay the booking fee. That holds your place in the diary.

2

We diagnose on site

The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.

3

You approve, we work

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

A fridge door that will not stay shut quietly ruins everything else: the temperature climbs, the compressor overworks and frost creeps in. Whether it swings open, bounces shut or needs a shoulder shove to seal, there is a mechanical reason, and it is usually fixable on a single visit. We diagnose it, quote it, and only then pick up a tool.

Questions people ask about fridge door not closing properly

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Why does my fridge door keep swinging open?

Usually the cabinet is not level, tilting the door geometry outward, or the hinges have dropped. Both are correctable — re-levelling the front feet or adjusting or replacing the hinges.

How do I test if the door seal is leaking?

Close the door on a sheet of paper and pull: it should come out with noticeable resistance all the way round. Anywhere it slides freely is a leak point, which is also worth telling us when booking.

Can I replace a door seal myself?

Cleaning the seal is a good DIY step, but replacing one is fiddly. The gasket has to come out and be refitted evenly so it seals without twisting, and the part is model-specific, so most people prefer an engineer to do it.

The door closes but frost forms around the seal — why?

That means warm humid air is still sneaking in through a gap or a weak section of seal and freezing at the coldest point. We trace the exact gap and correct the seal or alignment.

How much does it cost?

A booking fee is paid when you book, and labour is charged at an hourly rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost is quoted and approved before work starts, and parts like seals or hinges are quoted separately.
