We test the pump for supply, seizure and blockage, verify the drain path is clear, and only then quote a replacement with the part cost separated.

When a dishwasher stops draining, the pump takes the blame quickly. Sometimes that is right. Often it is a foreign object in the impeller, a blocked spigot where the drain hose meets the sink waste, or a kinked hose behind the machine. All three produce the same standing water and the same refusal to start a new cycle.

What the pump actually does

The drain pump is a small centrifugal pump at the lowest point of the sump. It runs for a short burst at the end of each wash phase, pushing water out through the drain hose. It runs briefly, not continuously, which is why a failing pump can seem intermittent before it stops altogether.

There are two common failure modes. The impeller jams on debris and the motor hums without turning. Or the winding or the pump's supply fails and the motor is silent. A third, less common, is a worn impeller that turns but moves very little water.

The checks that come first

Before any pump is considered we establish:

  • whether the filter and sump are clear
  • whether the drain hose is kinked or blocked
  • whether the sink spigot and trap are clear
  • whether water drains by gravity with the hose disconnected

If water will not leave with the pump bypassed, the pump is not the problem. That single check prevents most wasted pump replacements, and it is why we do it before quoting.

Testing the pump

With the machine isolated, we check the pump for supply voltage during a drain command, measure the winding resistance, and inspect the impeller for debris. A pump that hums and does not turn usually frees with the obstruction removed, and sometimes that is the whole repair. A pump with an open winding needs replacement; there is no repair for that.

Access varies considerably. Some machines have the pump reachable from inside the tub after removing the filter housing; others need the machine pulled out and laid on its side. That affects the time on the job, and we will say so.

Parts and availability

Drain pumps are mostly generic across a manufacturer's ranges, but not universally. We identify the part against your model number and quote it separately. If it needs ordering, the job becomes two visits: the diagnosis and the fit. We will not pretend a specific pump is on the van.

Water and power isolation

Any work on the pump means water and power are off first. Power at the socket, water at the appliance isolating valve where one is fitted and reachable. If the valve will not close, we isolate at the mains or stop, because working on a wet sump with a live supply is not something to improvise. If you have water under the machine, keep it isolated and tell us at booking.

Repair or replace the machine

A drain pump on a machine in reasonable condition is usually worth doing. Where the machine is older and the pump is one of several age-related failures, the arithmetic changes. We will give you the comparison after the diagnosis rather than steering you either way.

Aftercare

After fitting we run a drain cycle and watch the water leave, then a full short programme. Check the sink waste afterwards: if it drains slowly, the trap is partly blocked and will back water into the machine again. Keep the old part if you want it; there is no reason for us to take it away unless you ask.

Booking

Tell us the brand, model, how much water is standing and whether you can hear the pump humming. That hum is a useful clue. Book online and pay the booking fee at the time of booking; the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit, and we quote the full cost for your approval before starting work.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

£25 booking fee

then £85 per hour of labour

Best value. Book the slot now, pay the smallest booking fee.

Booked within 48 hours

£100 booking fee

then £65 per hour of labour

For jobs that can wait a day or two but not a fortnight.

Same-day call-out

£220 booking fee

then £45 per hour of labour

Urgent problems: standing water, no heat, no power, leaks.

2

We diagnose on site

The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.

3

You approve, we work

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

A drain pump is one of the more commonly replaced parts on a dishwasher, and one of the more commonly replaced unnecessarily. The symptom of a jammed impeller and the symptom of a failed winding look identical from the outside: water sits in the tub and the machine refuses to continue. Our job is to separate those before a part is ordered.

Exactly what was quoted

What I appreciated was being told what was actually wrong before anyone started. Sorted in under 27 minutes and the invoice matched the quote to the penny.

Job: Tumble Dryer Not Starting Cycle

Good job, slightly late

Solid work. Hourly rate feels fair for the amount of work involved and everything was tested before they left. Would book again.

Job: Toaster Not Working

No mess left behind

Really straightforward. It had been bothering us for weeks; diagnosed properly, fixed the same visit, and the price was exactly what was explained when booking. Can not fault it.

Questions people ask about drain pump failure

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Can I tell whether the pump has failed myself?

Partly. Bail the water, clean the filter, and check whether the sink waste drains freely. If the machine still hums and does not empty, that suggests a jam or a pump fault, and it needs testing rather than guessing.

What is checked before a pump is quoted?

The filter and sump, the drain hose for kinks or blocks, the sink spigot and trap, and whether water drains with the hose disconnected. Only when the path is clear and the pump is proven faulty do we quote a replacement.

Is a humming pump dangerous?

A pump humming without turning is a stalled motor and will overheat if left trying. Switch the machine off at the socket and leave it off rather than running cycle after cycle hoping it clears.

Could a jammed pump be freed without a new part?

Sometimes, yes. Glass, a bottle top or a piece of plastic in the impeller can be removed and the pump will run normally. We will tell you if that is the case rather than fitting a part you do not need.

What will it cost?

The booking fee is paid when you book. The hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. We quote the full cost and you approve it before work starts, with the pump itself identified and quoted separately once we have the model number.
