External entrance panels lead a hard life. They face rain, frost, sun and pollution; they get knocked by deliveries and leaned on by visitors; and occasionally they attract deliberate damage. Because the panel is the one part of the system that everyone in the building touches, panel damage affects everyone — and because it sits outside, damage to it often lets water into the system, turning a cosmetic problem into a functional one.
Types of panel damage
Impact damage — cracks, dents and shattered housings — is the most obvious. Weather damage develops more slowly: perished gaskets let moisture in, which corrodes the buttons, fogs any camera lens and eventually kills the electronics; you notice it first as intermittent faults in wet weather. Button failures from wear and corrosion make individual flats unreachable. Damaged or missing nameplates and button labels make the system confusing to use, and on shared buildings, scratched or covered cameras defeat the video function. vandalism — kicked panels, snapped buttons, graffiti — is an unfortunate regular. Loose mountings are worth noting too: a panel hanging off its frame puts strain on the wiring behind it.
How we assess it
We examine the panel's housing, gaskets, buttons, camera and mountings, look inside for water ingress and corrosion, and test which functions still work — which flats can be called, whether video and release still operate. From that we give you a straight assessment: repair the housing and sealing and keep the panel, or replace the panel or its modules. On very old panels where parts are unavailable, replacement of the whole panel is often the honest answer, and we will say so with the options laid out.
Repairs and replacements
Panel repairs include resealing and regasketing, replacing button modules and nameplates, drying and treating corrosion, and remaking sound mountings. Replacements are matched to your system where possible; where a whole new panel is needed, that is quoted as a distinct job covering the panel, its wiring connections and making good the door frame or wall. In flats and shared buildings the panel is communal equipment: permission from your landlord, managing agent or housing association is normally required before we work on it, and we will help you establish what is needed. We never force the communal door or bypass security to access a panel — access is arranged properly.
Security while damaged
A panel that no longer works is an access problem for the whole building, and damage to it can sometimes be a sign someone has tried to interfere with the door. If the entrance is not secure, contact your landlord or building manager immediately — we repair the system but do not force doors or bypass locks in the meantime.
Honest expectations
We assess before quoting, so no price can be promised until we have seen the panel. Repaired panels are repaired, not new: we cannot guarantee a regasketed housing against future weathering forever, though we will tell you its realistic prospects. Replacement panels are quoted after the assessment, including any making good.
When to book
Book when the panel is cracked or loose, when buttons have stopped working, when faults appear in wet weather, when the camera image has deteriorated, or after any deliberate damage. Tell us whether your building is managed by a landlord or agent, and whether other residents are affected.
A damaged panel is a problem for the whole building, not just your flat. Get in touch and we will assess the damage thoroughly, lay out the repair and replacement options clearly, and quote the work before anything begins — so you and your building know exactly what is proposed.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
The entrance panel is your intercom's face to the street, and it takes the worst of weather, knocks and occasionally worse. Cracked housings, broken buttons, water ingress and damaged nameplates all affect whether the system can be used at all. We assess the damage, secure what we can, and quote repair or replacement before starting — with the landlord's permission sorted first where the panel is communal.
What our customers say about our Security & CCTV service
5 out of 5 from 7 reviews
Would use again
Third time we have used Maintenance Men, and the same experience each time: agreed price, proper explanation, job done in one visit. The hourly rate is fair for the standard of work.
Job: CCTV Installation
Second time we have used them
I had put off sorting this for months because I expected a runaround. Quoted the booking fee plus hourly rate upfront, stuck to it, and actually found the underlying cause rather than just clearing the symptom. Worked neatly and hoovered up afterwards.
Job: Backup Battery Fault
Exactly what was quoted
What I appreciated was being told what was actually wrong before anyone started. Sorted in under 56 minutes and the invoice matched the quote to the penny.
Job: Alarm Repair Service

Questions people ask about external panel damage
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Can I repair the entrance panel myself?
No — the panel is external communal equipment, often in a shared building where permission is needed to touch it, and opening it exposes connections that are easily damaged further. Gentle cleaning of the lens and buttons is the sensible limit.
What do you check on a damaged panel visit?
We inspect the housing, gaskets, buttons, camera and mountings, look inside for water and corrosion, and test which functions still work. You then get a clear repair-versus-replace assessment with a quote for each option before any work starts.
Does panel damage need our landlord's permission to fix?
In shared buildings, yes — the entrance panel is communal equipment, so landlord, agent or housing association approval is normally required. Let us know your arrangement when booking and we will help identify exactly what permission is needed.
Someone kicked our panel in — can you make it secure again?
We can repair or replace the panel and restore its functions, quoted before we start. We do not force doors or bypass locks, so if the entrance itself is not secure, contact your landlord or building manager immediately as well.
What does panel repair or replacement cost?
You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. After assessment we quote the full cost before starting, with panels, modules and any making good quoted separately, and nothing proceeds until you approve it.
