A "storage full" message on a CCTV recorder sounds like a small problem, but it usually means something bigger: your system has quietly stopped saving footage, and you may not notice until you need a recording that is not there. Some recorders overwrite the oldest footage automatically and carry on forever; when that behaviour fails or is misconfigured, storage fills, recording stops, and the only clue is a warning icon nobody looks at.

Why storage fills up and stops saving

The commonest cause is overwrite settings: a recorder that is meant to recycle old footage may have been reconfigured after an update, power cut or well-meaning menu session, so it simply fills up and halts. Drive errors do the same job — a drive with corrupted sectors can stop accepting new footage long before it fails outright, and the recorder may reserve space it cannot use. It is also genuinely possible for a system to be outgrown: more cameras, higher resolution or continuous rather than motion recording all increase the amount of storage each day consumes, and a drive that was adequate when installed may no longer hold enough days of footage. Occasionally the fault is subtler — footage is being written to a partition or location the playback screen is not reading, which looks identical to "nothing is saving".

How we diagnose storage problems

Our engineer checks what the recorder reports about its drive: total capacity, used space, health status and error logs. We confirm whether footage is actually being written and whether the playback timeline matches what has been recorded, to separate a real recording stop from a playback display problem. We review the overwrite, retention and recording-quality settings against how much footage your cameras actually generate per day, which tells us quickly whether this is a settings fault, a drive fault or a genuine capacity shortfall. Where the drive is reporting errors, we test its health properly rather than just clearing the warning.

Fixes and configuration done properly

Most storage faults are corrected in the visit: overwrite behaviour restored, recording settings adjusted, drive errors addressed or the drive reconfigured cleanly. If the drive itself is failing, replacement is quoted as a part before fitting. If your system has genuinely outgrown its storage, we will talk you through the options — a larger drive, adjusted image quality, or motion-based recording that uses space more selectively — and quote whatever work is involved before you approve it. It is honest to say there is a trade-off: longer retention, more cameras and higher quality each cost storage, and we will explain what your setup can realistically hold rather than promising unlimited recording history.

Storing footage responsibly

What your drive holds is personal data, and the owner is responsible for handling it lawfully and considerately. Cameras should cover your own property rather than unnecessarily filming neighbours' homes or public space, footage should be retained for a sensible period rather than hoarded indefinitely, and clips should be shared only appropriately — for example with the police if they request them in connection with an incident. Sensible retention settings are not just practical, they are part of using the system considerately. We configure equipment; we do not provide legal advice.

Aftercare

After the fix, check your playback timeline occasionally — a minute a week confirms footage is rolling and retention is behaving as configured. If a storage warning reappears, do not silence the beeping and move on; it is telling you something specific. Note that a recorder which has been reconfigured once can be reconfigured again by an update or power cut, so sudden changes are worth a quick look.

When to call us

Book when you first see a storage warning or notice your timeline has stopped growing, and tell us the recorder's make and model, what the message says, and how many cameras record continuously. You pay a booking fee when you book, labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit, and the full cost is quoted and approved before work starts, with parts quoted separately.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

Booked 14+ days ahead

£25 booking fee

then £85 per hour of labour

Best value. Book the slot now, pay the smallest booking fee.

Booked within 48 hours

£100 booking fee

then £65 per hour of labour

For jobs that can wait a day or two but not a fortnight.

Same-day call-out

£220 booking fee

then £45 per hour of labour

Urgent problems: standing water, no heat, no power, leaks.

1

Book the slot

Choose the window that suits you and pay the booking fee. That holds your place in the diary.

2

We diagnose on site

The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.

3

You approve, we work

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

A storage-full warning is one of the most misunderstood CCTV faults, because it often means the system has stopped recording without anything actually being broken. Overwrite behaviour, drive errors and retention settings all interact here. Our engineer sorts out what is happening with your storage and configures it so recordings keep rolling without you having to think about it.

What our customers say about our Security & CCTV service

5 out of 5 from 7 reviews

Would use again

Third time we have used Maintenance Men, and the same experience each time: agreed price, proper explanation, job done in one visit. The hourly rate is fair for the standard of work.

Job: CCTV Installation

Second time we have used them

I had put off sorting this for months because I expected a runaround. Quoted the booking fee plus hourly rate upfront, stuck to it, and actually found the underlying cause rather than just clearing the symptom. Worked neatly and hoovered up afterwards.

Job: Backup Battery Fault

Exactly what was quoted

What I appreciated was being told what was actually wrong before anyone started. Sorted in under 56 minutes and the invoice matched the quote to the penny.

Job: Alarm Repair Service

Questions people ask about cctv storage full or not saving

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Can I sort out the storage settings myself?

You can reasonably look at the recorder's menus and see whether overwrite is enabled, but changing recording settings without understanding the interactions can leave you with less footage than before, and some storage errors indicate a failing drive that settings will not fix. If in doubt, let us diagnose it properly.

What do you check when storage is full?

We read the recorder's drive status, capacity and error logs, confirm footage is actually being written and playable, and review overwrite, retention and quality settings against what your cameras generate per day. That tells us whether it is a settings fault, a drive fault or genuine capacity shortfall.

How long will my recorder keep footage once it is fixed?

That depends on drive capacity, camera count, image quality and how much motion your property sees, so we will calculate it for your setup and explain the trade-offs rather than guess. Longer retention always costs more storage, and we will tell you what your current drive can realistically hold.

Will more storage mean better footage?

Not by itself — capacity affects how many days of history you keep, while image quality is a separate setting. We can discuss whether your setup would benefit from more capacity, adjusted quality or motion-based recording, and quote any changes clearly before you approve them.

How is the cost worked out?

You pay a booking fee when you book. Labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost is quoted and approved before work starts; parts are quoted separately.
