Sensors are the quiet part of a home's security and safety equipment: they sit on walls and ceilings, ask nothing of you, and fail gradually rather than dramatically. A battery fades, a bracket creeps, a lens collects dust, a radio link weakens — none of which announces itself until the sensor is needed. That is exactly what a maintenance check is for. To be clear about what it is: an inspection and test of your sensors as they stand today, not a repair visit. We will find faults, and we will quote repairs separately and honestly — but the deliverable of the check itself is an accurate picture of your system, in writing you can act on.

What the check covers

For each sensor we look at the things that determine whether it will do its job when needed. Batteries and power: condition and age, compartment state, any low-battery or fault indications. Physical condition: mounting security, bracket drift, case integrity, tamper switch state, and contamination — dust, grease, moisture, insects — that degrades detection quietly. Alignment: whether each sensor still covers what it was positioned to cover, whether contact gaps are within tolerance, and whether anything structural — a dropped door, a warping window — is pushing geometry out of true. Function: a live test of each sensor against the panel or hub, including walk tests for motion sensors and open-and-close tests for contacts, and interconnection tests where alarms trigger each other. Reporting: whether zone names, entries and app status match reality, because a system that reports wrongly is nearly as bad as one that does not report at all. Where a system includes smart devices, we also note firmware age and app status, because both affect how reliably a sensor reports day to day, and both are easy to overlook until they cause a fault. And if you have seen a warning you are unsure about, the check is the time to ask us what it meant.

What you get from it

A clear, honest report: which sensors are healthy, which are drifting toward trouble, and which need action now — with the likely cause and the repair or replacement cost quoted separately, so you can decide with the numbers in front of you. Where the check reveals DIY-appropriate work, such as battery replacement, we will tell you that too, because an honest inspection points out the work you do not need to pay us for. We will also flag anything in the system's placement that limits performance — a motion sensor facing sunlight, a hub behind metal — because those are facts you should know even when they are not faults.

What a check cannot promise

An inspection is a snapshot, and no check can guarantee that every sensor will detect in every future condition — sensors have tolerances, batteries age, homes change. What a check does deliver is confidence in the near term and early warning of the drift that would otherwise surface as a failure. It is honest in both directions: we will not invent faults to justify work, and we will not pass a sensor as healthy that our tests say is not.

Booking a maintenance check

Call or use the website and tell us roughly what sensors you have — types, wired or wireless, panel or hub make — and anything that has been behaving oddly, even occasionally. You pay a booking fee when you book, labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit, and the full cost is quoted and approved before work starts, with any repairs or parts quoted separately.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

Booked 14+ days ahead

£25 booking fee

then £85 per hour of labour

Best value. Book the slot now, pay the smallest booking fee.

Booked within 48 hours

£100 booking fee

then £65 per hour of labour

For jobs that can wait a day or two but not a fortnight.

Same-day call-out

£220 booking fee

then £45 per hour of labour

Urgent problems: standing water, no heat, no power, leaks.

1

Book the slot

Choose the window that suits you and pay the booking fee. That holds your place in the diary.

2

We diagnose on site

The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.

3

You approve, we work

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

A maintenance check is an inspection, not a repair: we look at what you have, test how it is performing today, and tell you plainly what is healthy, what is drifting and what needs attention. It is the cheapest way to find out the truth about your system before a fault finds it out for you.

What our customers say about our Security & CCTV service

5 out of 5 from 7 reviews

Would use again

Third time we have used Maintenance Men, and the same experience each time: agreed price, proper explanation, job done in one visit. The hourly rate is fair for the standard of work.

Job: CCTV Installation

Second time we have used them

I had put off sorting this for months because I expected a runaround. Quoted the booking fee plus hourly rate upfront, stuck to it, and actually found the underlying cause rather than just clearing the symptom. Worked neatly and hoovered up afterwards.

Job: Backup Battery Fault

Exactly what was quoted

What I appreciated was being told what was actually wrong before anyone started. Sorted in under 56 minutes and the invoice matched the quote to the penny.

Questions people ask about sensor maintenance check

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Is a maintenance check something I can do myself?

You can and should do the basics: monthly test-button checks on alarms, walk tests on motion sensors, and keeping units clean and unobstructed. A professional check adds what you cannot easily do at home — load-testing batteries, checking tamper circuits and contact gaps, verifying radio links and testing the system's reporting end to end.

What does the maintenance check include?

Each sensor is inspected for battery and power condition, mounting, alignment, contamination and tamper state, then tested live against the panel or hub — walk tests, contact tests and interconnection checks. You receive a written picture of the system's health, with any needed repairs quoted separately.

Is this a repair visit?

No — the check is an inspection, and we are explicit about that up front. If faults are found, we explain them and quote repairs separately, and nothing is repaired without your approval. The value of the check itself is knowing exactly where you stand rather than discovering it during a failure.

How often should sensors be checked?

Your own monthly tests — alarm test buttons and a walk test — are the first line. A fuller professional inspection is sensible annually, or sooner if the system has behaved oddly, batteries are ageing together, or the home has changed. What we cannot promise is that any schedule catches every future fault — it raises the odds, not the certainty.

How much does a maintenance check cost?

You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost of the check is quoted and approved before we start, and any repairs or parts it identifies are quoted separately for you to approve or decline.
