What causes damp inside a wall
There are four realistic explanations, and they need different fixes. Water can come from a pipe buried in the wall — a supply run to a bathroom, a radiator feed or an outside tap. It can come through from a wet room on the other side, where grout, silicone or a tray seal has failed. It can enter from outside through cracked render, failed pointing, a blocked gutter or a leaking downpipe soaking the wall. Or it can be genuine rising damp or condensation, which look similar and are frequently misdiagnosed. Guessing between these is why damp reappears after redecorating.
Why it spreads upwards and outwards
Water moves through plaster and blockwork by capillary action, so a leak at skirting height can show as a patch near the ceiling. Salts drawn out of the masonry crystallise at the surface and blow the paint and plaster. Mould establishes in the cooler, damper margins. Left alone, the damp reaches timber studs, floor joists and skirting, and eventually shows in the room below — sometimes as a damp patch on ceiling plaster, sometimes as an active water leak from ceiling. Each of those stages costs more to put right than the leak itself would have.
How we work out the cause
We map moisture readings across the wall at several heights and compare them with the other side, which usually separates a rising pattern from a localised leak. Thermal imaging shows cold, wet areas and the path water is taking. Meter tests with the supply isolated tell us whether a pressurised pipe is losing water. Outside, we check render, pointing, gutters and downpipes at the point where the damp is worst. This is hidden water leak detection in the fabric of the building, and it is the step that stops the same stain coming back.
How we repair it
If a pipe is at fault, we open a small section, repair or replace the failed length, and pressure-test it. That water leak repair is the simple part; drying the wall properly takes longer and matters just as much. If the source is a failed seal or grout line, we strip it back and renew it properly rather than sealing over the top. Where water has entered from outside, we make good the render or pointing and clear the drainage that caused it. Then the wall is given time to dry, treated where mould or salts are present, and re-plastered with a suitable backing. Only then does decoration make sense.
Preventing it from returning
Keep bathroom and shower silicone in good order and replace it when it lifts. Clear gutters and check downpipes before winter. Seal cracks in external render as they appear rather than at the end of the season. If a wall has been damp, do not redecorate until readings show it is dry — paint traps moisture and the stain comes back. A leak detection plumber can confirm dryness with a meter before you spend money on decoration.
When to call us
Call if a damp patch has a defined edge and grows, if paint is blistering in a vertical line, if you can smell damp in a room with no obvious source, or if the same patch has returned after plastering. If water is actively running or the wall is wet to the touch near a socket, switch off the circuit and ask for emergency leak repair near me. A slow, dry-looking patch can be booked normally, but should not be left indefinitely.
Book a call-out
If the cause turns out to be external, we will explain what is needed and quote before proceeding. If you are watching water spread right now, call and we will help you stop water leak fast while we travel. Book online or by phone — and please do not redecorate until we have confirmed the wall is dry.

Damp on an internal wall is often blamed on condensation or rising damp when the real cause is a leak inside the wall cavity. Pipework chased into plaster, failed shower seals, cracked external render and blocked downpipes all push water into the fabric of the building. We identify which one it is, repair the source, and treat the plaster so the wall can dry out — rather than covering the problem with paint.

Questions people ask about wall damp leak repair
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
How is a leak different from rising damp?
Rising damp usually produces a fairly level band of moisture at the base of a wall, while a leak tends to create a defined patch that spreads from a point. Moisture readings taken at several heights show the pattern clearly. We test rather than assume.
Do I have to remove the plaster?
Only where it has failed or where we need access to the pipe. Sound plaster can often stay. Blown, salty or mouldy plaster needs removing so the repair does not fail underneath new paint.
How is the work priced?
You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how quickly you need us. The full cost of the work is quoted before we start, so you approve it before any tools come out.
Could the damp be condensation?
It could, particularly in bathrooms and kitchens with poor ventilation. Condensation tends to affect cold surfaces and appear across a wide area, often with black mould at the edges. A moisture survey will separate it from a leak.
Can you fix a leak in a pipe buried in the wall without major damage?
Usually, yes. Once detection has located the failure, we open a small section and repair or replace that length. Chasing out an entire wall is rarely necessary unless the pipework is corroded throughout.
