A small tree outgrows its welcome for lots of reasons: it has got too close to the house or a wall, its roots are lifting a path, it shades the whole garden or it simply grew from a seedling nobody had the heart to pull out while it was small. Removing a small tree is a manageable job — but it is also an irreversible one, and doing it properly is more about planning than power.
Before anything is cut: the checks that matter
The most important question is whether the tree is protected. Trees with a Tree Preservation Order, and trees in conservation areas, generally need permission from the local council before they can be cut down, and cutting a protected tree without it is a serious offence with serious penalties. Working out whether a tree is protected is the customer's responsibility to confirm with the council, and we will always flag it and tell you how to check rather than guess. The second question is what is underground — before any digging out of stumps we treat buried services with respect, locating carefully and using detectors where appropriate, while being clear that no scan guarantees what lies below and that checking utility plans is part of a safe dig. Then there is access: how the tree comes apart, where the pieces land, and what sits underneath it — greenhouses, fences, ponds and power lines all change the plan.
How a small tree comes down
A small tree is usually dismantled rather than felled whole: branches are cut off in manageable sections from the top down, the stem is cut into logs, and everything is lowered or dropped into a clear drop zone we agree with you first. Doing it in sections is what protects your garden, your fences and your neighbour's property — dropping the whole trunk sideways is how trees end up through greenhouses. Where the tree is close to a structure, or larger and taller than a two-storey window, we will say honestly if the job needs a climbing specialist or a roofing-style access arrangement, because working at height has real limits we do not improvise around.
The stump question
Felling leaves a stump, and what to do with it is a decision worth making up front. A low stump can simply be left to rot if it is out of the way, but it will take years and can regrow for many species — cherry, willow and poplar reshoot with enthusiasm. Grinding the stump out leaves the area ready for turf or planting; digging it out entirely removes the root plate but disturbs more ground. Each option is priced separately, and we will recommend the one that matches what you plan to do with the space.
Waste and aftercare
Tree removal generates serious volumes of green waste, so disposal is agreed in advance as part of the quote — logs you may want to keep for burning or wildlife piles, everything else taken away. The ground where the tree stood will settle as the roots rot, and it is worth improving and levelling before reseeding or replanting. If you want a replacement tree, we will happily advise on species and position, including how far from walls and drains a new tree should really be.
How to book
Book by phone or website, telling us the tree's approximate height and trunk thickness, what is near it, and whether the stump needs dealing with. You pay a booking fee when you book, labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit, and the full cost is quoted and approved before we start, with stump work and waste removal listed separately.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

Removing a tree is a one-way decision, so it deserves a moment's thought before the saw comes out — which is why our process starts with checks rather than cutting. Is the tree protected, what is it near, how does it come down in pieces that hurt nothing, and what happens to the stump and the waste? We walk you through all of it before anyone lifts a tool.
What our customers say about our outdoor & exterior service
4.6 out of 5 from 10 reviews
Sorted the same day
Rang in the morning and they got to us in Wolverhampton by early afternoon. Very clear about what needed doing, what it would cost and what could wait. No pressure to add extras. Exactly the sort of tradesperson you want.
Job: Uneven Shed Base
Turned up when they said
Turned up in the window they promised, walked me through the options (turns out the previous installer had left the pipework awkward to get to), then cracked on. Everything was tested before they left. No mess, no drama, no surprise on the bill.
Job: Water-Damaged Patio
Good work, poor communication
Work itself was fine and tidy. Communication beforehand was patchy — I did not get the confirmation message and had to ring to check the slot. Would still use again.
Job: Sinking Driveway

Questions people ask about small tree removal
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Can I cut down a small tree myself?
A sapling you could saw through in a minute, probably yes — anything with a trunk thicker than your arm, close to a fence, wall or greenhouse, is a different risk altogether. Trees fall unpredictably and sections roll; most DIY tree injuries come from exactly the jobs that looked small. We bring the sectioning experience and the drop-zone planning that keeps it safe.
What do you check before removing a tree?
Whether the tree could be protected by a preservation order or sit in a conservation area, what is close enough to be damaged, what services and pipes may run near the roots, how we get sections down safely, and what you want done with the stump and the waste. All of that shapes the quote before any cutting starts.
Do I need permission to remove my own tree?
Sometimes, yes. If the tree has a Tree Preservation Order or you live in a conservation area, the council's permission is normally needed first, and it is the customer's responsibility to confirm that with the council — we will always flag the possibility and explain how to check. Cutting a protected tree without consent is an offence, so this is one shortcut never worth taking.
What happens to the stump after the tree is removed?
That is your choice, priced as a separate option: leave it low to rot down naturally, grind it out so the area can be turfed or planted, or dig out the root plate entirely if you are re-landscaping that spot. Some species reshoot from the stump, so if regrowth would annoy you, grinding is usually the cleanest answer.
How much does small tree removal cost?
You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost is quoted and approved before work starts — it reflects the tree's size, position and access — and stump removal and waste disposal are quoted separately so you choose exactly what to include.
