Resurfacing — laying a new surface over an existing driveway — is where driveway economics get interesting. Done over a sound base, it transforms a tired drive for a fraction of replacement cost. Done over a failing base, it is money spent hiding a problem that will resurface — literally — within a few winters. That is why we survey before quoting resurfacing: the base decides whether it is the right answer at all. This page explains how resurfacing works, what makes a drive a good or bad candidate, and how the work is done properly.

What resurfacing means

For tarmac drives, resurfacing means cleaning and preparing the existing surface, applying a bonding layer where needed, and laying a new wearing course of asphalt over it. For concrete, overlays and decorative resurfacing systems exist, though their suitability depends heavily on the slab's condition. For block paving, 'resurfacing' is usually a relay: the blocks come up, the base is checked and corrected, and the field goes back with fresh bedding and sand. What resurfacing is not is a skim over whatever is there — a thin new layer over cracked, sinking or undrained surface joins the failure it is sitting on.

What makes a good candidate

The survey looks for the conditions resurfacing needs. A base that is sound: solid, well compacted, with no soft or hollow areas when probed. Falls that work: the drive must already shed water, because a new surface laid over poor falls inherits them, dips and all — correcting falls during resurfacing is possible but changes the scope and the quote. Cracks that are stable and few: a handful of cracks can be prepared and bridged; a crack every metre is a base telling you it has failed. Structure that suits the overlay: an old tarmac surface in reasonable condition takes an overlay well; a badly crazed, potholed or previously patched surface may need more preparation than the saving justifies — and we will say so. And thickness to spare: overlays raise the surface, which affects thresholds, drainage channels and how the drive meets paths and garages, and we check those details before quoting.

When we will tell you not to resurface

If the survey shows the subbase has failed — soft areas, dips that grow, water washing through — resurfacing is the wrong spend, and we will say so plainly and talk you through the honest alternatives: sectional rebuilds where the failure is local, or full replacement where it is not. We would rather lose a job than sell you a surface that fails in three winters; that is the whole point of surveying first, and it is why our resurfacing quotes carry a survey behind them rather than a guess.

How the work is done

Preparation is most of the job: the surface cleaned, defects cut out and repaired, cracks prepared and bridged, edges and thresholds adjusted where the new level needs it. Then the new surface goes down with correct falls to the drainage points, and edges, joints and any seals are finished. Weather matters: surfacing materials have temperature and moisture requirements, and we schedule sensibly and tell you plainly when weather must delay work rather than lay a surface that cannot cure or bond. Excavation is usually minimal in resurfacing, but where the survey calls for localised base repairs, we locate underground services carefully and use detectors where appropriate — no scan guarantees what lies below, and a safe dig approach applies.

What we guarantee and what we don't

We do not guarantee against settlement, weathering or future blockage — ground, frost and traffic act on every drive, and an overlay inherits the ground it sits on. What we do promise is a survey before the quote, a surface laid to correct falls over a verified base, materials as quoted, and the full cost approved before we start.

Costs and booking

Resurfacing is a quoted project: the survey establishes the preparation the existing surface needs, and the full price follows that survey and is approved by you before work starts, with materials quoted separately. The estimate attached to this job covers a defined working day on an agreed scope — a full resurfacing is typically a multi-day project staged with checkpoints. When you enquire, tell us the surface type and approximate age, how it has worn, whether it dips or holds water, and what surface you are considering for the new layer.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

Resurfacing is the attractive middle option between repairs and full replacement — new surface, fraction of the cost of starting again. But it only works when the base beneath is sound, and that is exactly what our survey establishes before you spend anything.

What our customers say about our outdoor & exterior service

4.6 out of 5 from 10 reviews

Sorted the same day

Rang in the morning and they got to us in Wolverhampton by early afternoon. Very clear about what needed doing, what it would cost and what could wait. No pressure to add extras. Exactly the sort of tradesperson you want.

Job: Uneven Shed Base

Turned up when they said

Turned up in the window they promised, walked me through the options (turns out the previous installer had left the pipework awkward to get to), then cracked on. Everything was tested before they left. No mess, no drama, no surprise on the bill.

Job: Water-Damaged Patio

Good work, poor communication

Work itself was fine and tidy. Communication beforehand was patchy — I did not get the confirmation message and had to ring to check the slot. Would still use again.

Questions people ask about driveway resurfacing

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Can I resurface my driveway myself?

Honestly, no — resurfacing needs the existing surface prepared to a standard that bonding depends on, materials laid within tight temperature and moisture windows, and falls engineered so the new surface drains. It is not a weekend project, and the materials are unforgiving of inexperience. The genuinely useful DIY preparation is keeping the drive swept and noting where it dips or holds water, which feeds the survey.

What does your resurfacing survey cover?

The condition of the existing surface and, critically, the base beneath it — probing for soft and hollow areas — the falls and drainage, the number and pattern of cracks, the surface's construction, and the details resurfacing affects, like thresholds and how the drive meets paths and garages. The survey decides whether resurfacing is the right option and what preparation the quote must include.

When should a driveway be replaced instead of resurfaced?

When the base beneath has failed — soft areas, dips that grow, water washing through the surface — resurfacing just hides the problem and fails early, so replacement is the honest answer. Widespread deep cracking, heavy previous patching and standing water all point the same way. The survey tells us which category your drive is in, and we will tell you plainly rather than sell you a surface that will not last.

Will resurfacing fix my driveway's drainage problems?

Only if we correct the falls as part of the work, which is possible but changes the scope and the quote — a new surface laid over poor falls inherits them exactly. If your drive holds water, tell us when you enquire, because that shapes the survey and the options. Where drainage correction is needed, we will quote it as part of the project so the new surface is laid on falls that actually work.

How much does driveway resurfacing cost?

The full cost is quoted after the survey and approved before work starts, with materials quoted separately — preparation needs vary enormously between drives, so there is no honest phone figure. You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. The estimate on this job covers a defined working day on an agreed scope; a full resurfacing is quoted as a staged project after survey.
