There are two ways to replace a driveway, and only one of them is worth the money. The cheap way caps the old surface with a new one and hopes; the right way excavates the failed drive, assesses what went wrong with the ground and base, and rebuilds from the subbase up so the new surface is not repeating the old one's mistakes. This page explains how we approach a replacement, what the survey decides, and what you should expect at each stage.
Why driveways reach the end
Drives usually fail from the bottom up: a thin or poorly compacted subbase that has finally compressed; water washing through cracked or open edges until the base is eroded; frost finding every water path until the surface has broken apart; or simply an old surface — thin tarmac, spalled concrete, exhausted block paving joints — past economic repair. Understanding which of these killed your drive is the most valuable part of the replacement, because it decides what the new build must do differently: deeper subbase, better falls, proper drainage, real edge restraint. A replacement that ignores the cause builds the next problem into the new surface.
The survey
We survey what is there and what is under it: the old surface's condition and construction, the state of the subbase where we can probe or open it, the ground type and how it behaves through the seasons, existing levels and falls, where rainwater goes now and where it should go, access for machinery and skips, and what services run beneath or near the area. It is also where we settle the new design with you honestly: surface material — block paving versus tarmac versus concrete versus gravel have genuinely different costs, looks, drainage behaviour and maintenance — and any changes to falls, levels or drainage the rebuild should include while everything is open. We will give you the trade-offs plainly rather than steer you to the surface that suits us.
Permissions and your responsibilities
Drainage rules can apply to replacement work depending on where rainwater discharges, kerb drops involve approvals, and conservation areas have their own requirements. We flag what we can see and help you understand the questions, but planning, permissions and compliance are the customer's responsibility — we do not promise compliance status on anyone's behalf, and it is far better to have that settled before the old drive comes up.
How the replacement is built
The honest sequence: break out and remove the old drive, including enough of any failed base to reach sound material; assess the exposed ground and adjust the design for what it shows; install edge restraints set in concrete; build the subbase in compacted layers at the depth your ground and vehicles demand; lay the bedding or binder layers the chosen surface needs; lay the surface with proper falls to drainage points; and finish joints, sand or sealer as the material requires. Underground services are the constant caution: we locate carefully and use detectors where appropriate, but no scan guarantees exactly what lies below — utilities' plans and a safe dig approach are part of the responsibilities we set out with you before excavation.
Weather and staging
A replacement is weather-dependent work: excavation in wet conditions makes mud of the ground, and surfacing materials have temperature and moisture requirements. We schedule sensibly, tell you plainly when weather must delay work, and stage the project so your access is managed and the site is never left vulnerable overnight.
What we guarantee and what we don't
We do not guarantee against settlement, weathering or future blockage — ground, frost and traffic act on every drive ever built. What we do promise is an excavation to sound material, a subbase built for your ground and vehicles, falls that actually drain, materials as quoted, and the full cost approved before we start.
Costs and booking
The full cost of the replacement is quoted after the survey and approved before work starts, with materials quoted separately — and the survey is what makes the price real, because the depth of excavation, the volume to remove and the base rebuild required only become known when the old drive is assessed. The estimate attached to this job covers a defined working day on an agreed scope; a full replacement is a multi-day project staged with clear checkpoints. When you enquire, tell us what is there now, roughly how old it is, how it has failed, and the surface you are considering.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.
Booked 14+ days ahead
£25 booking fee
then £85 per hour of labour
Best value. Book the slot now, pay the smallest booking fee.
Booked within 48 hours
£100 booking fee
then £65 per hour of labour
For jobs that can wait a day or two but not a fortnight.
Same-day call-out
£220 booking fee
then £45 per hour of labour
Urgent problems: standing water, no heat, no power, leaks.

Choose the window that suits you and pay the booking fee. That holds your place in the diary.
We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
Replacing a driveway means dealing honestly with why the old one failed — because laying a new surface over the same weak base simply schedules the same failure. We survey the old drive and the ground beneath, quote the full replacement from that survey, and rebuild it from the subbase up.
What our customers say about our outdoor & exterior service
4.6 out of 5 from 10 reviews
Sorted the same day
Rang in the morning and they got to us in Wolverhampton by early afternoon. Very clear about what needed doing, what it would cost and what could wait. No pressure to add extras. Exactly the sort of tradesperson you want.
Job: Uneven Shed Base
Turned up when they said
Turned up in the window they promised, walked me through the options (turns out the previous installer had left the pipework awkward to get to), then cracked on. Everything was tested before they left. No mess, no drama, no surprise on the bill.
Job: Water-Damaged Patio
Good work, poor communication
Work itself was fine and tidy. Communication beforehand was patchy — I did not get the confirmation message and had to ring to check the slot. Would still use again.
Job: Sinking Driveway

Questions people ask about driveway replacement
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Can I replace my driveway myself?
Breaking up an old drive is DIY-possible, but a replacement that lasts needs the failed base excavated to sound material, subbase built and compacted to the right depth, edge restraints set in concrete, and falls engineered for drainage — with services located before any digging. Those are the parts that decide whether the new drive lasts, and they are exactly the parts DIY replaces usually get wrong. At minimum, have the ground and old base assessed before you commit.
What does your replacement survey cover?
The old surface's construction and condition, the state of the subbase, ground type and seasonal behaviour, levels and achievable falls, drainage — where water goes now and where it should — access for machinery, and services beneath the area. It is also where we settle the new design with you: surface material and any changes to falls or drainage that the rebuild should include.
Do I need permission to replace my driveway?
Possibly — drainage rules can apply depending on where rainwater discharges, kerb drops need council approval, and conservation areas have their own requirements. We flag what we can see and help you understand the questions, but permissions and compliance are the customer's responsibility and we do not promise compliance status. Sort it before the old drive comes up, not after.
How long does a driveway replacement take?
It depends on the area, what is being removed, the ground and the new surface — which is why we quote after survey rather than estimate. A full replacement is a multi-day project staged with clear checkpoints, and weather decides some of the timing because excavation and surfacing need suitable conditions. We tell you plainly when weather must delay work rather than compromise the build.
How much does it cost to replace a driveway?
The full cost is quoted after the survey and approved before work starts, with materials quoted separately — the depth of excavation, removal volumes and base rebuild required only become known when the old drive is assessed, so there is no honest phone-quote figure. You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit; the survey turns your plans into a firm price.
