Wheelchair fittings work loose for a living. The chair vibrates over kerbs, takes the user's weight on and off hundreds of times a day, and gets folded, lifted and loaded into cars. Fixings that were tight when the chair was new gradually give up, and the first sign is usually a click, a wobble or a rattle that was not there before. Caught early, this is one of the cheapest repairs there is. Left alone, a loose seat or armrest becomes a failure at the moment someone is transferring their weight onto it. This page covers why fittings loosen, what we check, and when loose means more than loose.
What works loose, and why
Seats and backrests loosen at their mounts, where bolts work through worn holes or where the seat plate has flexed thousands of times. Armrests loosen in their sockets and latches. Footrests and leg rests rattle in their hangers. Headrests, side guards, trays and bags — anything bolted or clipped on — all walk loose over months. The causes are ordinary: vibration, repeated loading, fixings that were never quite tight after a previous repair, and wear in the holes and slots the fixings sit in.
There is also a less ordinary cause that matters: a loose fitting can be the visible symptom of a crack or bend nearby in the frame, or of a fixing hole that has wallowed out beyond its bolt's ability to hold. That is why we investigate rather than just tightening — a seat that wobbles because its mount is cracked needs a different conversation from one that needs a spanner.
How we diagnose and fix
We go through the chair fitting by fitting, loading each one the way daily use loads it and feeling for movement. We check the seat and backrest mounts, the armrest sockets, the footrest hangers, and every fixing in between, looking for looseness, wear in the holes, missing washers, damaged threads and stripped threads. Where a fitting simply needs proper tightening — to the right torque, not just "tight" — that is usually the whole repair. Where a fixing or fitting is worn or damaged, we replace it with manufacturer-approved parts and quote first.
Then we test the result the way it will be used: weight on the seat, load on the armrests, the chair folded and unfolded where applicable. A seat is not "fixed" because it stopped rattling; it is fixed when it holds a person securely, and that is the standard we leave with.
What you can do yourself
Checking fixings is reasonable DIY: if you can see a loose bolt and your manual covers adjusting it, tightening it carefully is fine. What we would steer you away from is over-tightening, which strips threads and cracks plastic fittings, and shimming loose fittings with washers, tape or hope, which hides wear that should be seen. If a fitting will not stay tight, or if the looseness is in the seat structure itself, book a visit — those are symptoms, not problems.
When looseness points deeper
If the same fitting keeps working loose, the fixing hole or the mount is usually worn or damaged, and repeatedly tightening it makes the underlying wear worse. If looseness comes with creaking from the frame, visible cracks, or wheels that have gone out of alignment, that suggests frame damage, which we assess as a structural question rather than a fittings job — and we will say plainly if the chair is not safe to use until that is resolved.
Aftercare
Make a checking habit part of cleaning the chair: a minute spent feeling each fitting for movement each week catches looseness while it is still a spanner job. After any repair or wheel removal, re-check. And report rattles promptly — they are the chair's early warning system, and they work.
Booking
Tell us the make and model, which fitting is loose or rattling, how long it has been happening, and whether anything was repaired, removed or refitted recently. You pay a booking fee when you book, labour is hourly at a rate depending on how soon you need the visit, and the full cost — including any replacement fixings — is quoted and approved before we start.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
A seat that wobbles or a fitting that rattles is easy to ignore for a week and regret afterwards, because loose fittings only ever get looser. We trace why things have worked loose — wear, missing fixings, or something deeper in the frame — and secure them with the right parts. You approve the cost before any work starts.
What our customers say about our mobility & accessibility service
4.5 out of 5 from 8 reviews
Proper job, no upselling
Turned up in the window they promised, walked me through the options (turns out the old fitting was seized and needed careful removal), then cracked on. Everything was tested before they left. No mess, no drama, no surprise on the bill.
Job: Loose or Faulty Brakes
Fine in the end
The problem is fixed, which is the main thing, and the engineer clearly knew what they were doing. It took a fair bit longer than the estimate on the phone and I had to ask twice for a breakdown of the hours.
Job: Stair Lift Service
Would use again
What I appreciated was being told what was actually wrong before anyone started. Sorted in under 70 minutes and the invoice matched the quote to the penny.

Questions people ask about loose seat or fittings
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Can I tighten loose wheelchair fittings myself?
Carefully, yes — if your manual covers it and you tighten to snug rather than forced. Over-tightening strips threads and cracks fittings, which turns a small job into a parts order. If a fitting will not stay tight, or the looseness is in the seat itself, that is a symptom worth having diagnosed.
What do you check for loose seats and fittings?
Every fitting loaded the way daily use loads it: seat and backrest mounts, armrest sockets, footrest hangers, and all fixings — looking for wear in holes, damaged threads and missing hardware. We repair with manufacturer-approved parts and test the result under real load before we leave.
Is a wobbly seat actually dangerous?
It can be. A seat that shifts during a transfer, or a fitting that fails under weight, can cause a fall, and looseness only worsens with use. It is not an emergency, but it is not something to put off either — particularly if the chair is used for transfers without help.
My seat keeps working loose no matter how often I tighten it — why?
That usually means the fixing hole or mount is worn or damaged, so the bolt has nothing solid to grip. Repeated tightening makes it worse. The repair is replacing the worn fitting or fixing properly, and if there is a crack nearby in the frame we will tell you — that changes the conversation.
How much will the visit cost?
You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need us. The full cost of the work, including any fixings or fittings, is quoted and approved before we begin, with parts itemised separately.
