Choosing and fitting a stair lift starts long before anyone arrives with a drill. The right outcome depends on an honest survey of your staircase, a realistic conversation about what different models offer, and an installation done to the manufacturer's specification with nothing improvised. Here is how we approach it, stage by stage.

The survey comes first

We measure the staircase properly: total run, step dimensions, landings, the width and shape at top and bottom, doorways near the staircase, and anything that affects where the rail starts and ends. We look at the wall and skirt side of the stairs, the electrics available for the charger supply, and practical points like where a rail would leave the bottom of the stairs clear for other users. Straight staircases are straightforward; curved ones, half-landings and tight turns change the options and the cost significantly, and we will say so plainly. We also ask about the intended user — not to make medical judgements, which we do not do, but because seat height, swivel type, armrest style and weight limits are manufacturer specifications that the user, their family or carers need to weigh up. If a transfer bench or other solution suits better than a lift, we will say that too, and we can point you towards the people who assess such things.

Choosing and quoting

Following the survey we put options in front of you with honest trade-offs: straight versus curved rail, manual versus powered features, and what each realistically costs. Installation of a full lift is a quoted project — the quote follows the survey and covers the defined scope, with parts priced within it, and nothing starts until you approve the quote. We never promise delivery dates for parts or equipment before they are confirmed.

The installation day

A straight-rail installation is typically a defined working day; curved and complex installations can take longer, and we will tell you which applies to yours when quoting. The rail fixes to the stair treads — not the wall — with fixings engineered for the load, and the carriage, seat and footplate are assembled and adjusted to specification. We test the charger supply, run the lift through its full travel repeatedly under load, verify every safety sensor, and check the park and charge positions. We keep the household informed throughout, work to keep at least the landing clear while we go, and clear up properly afterwards.

Handover and learning the lift

No installation is finished until you are comfortable using it. We demonstrate every journey, transfer, swivel and fold, explain the safety features and what the indicators mean, show you the charging routine, and leave you the manual and our contact details. We would rather answer ten questions on day one than have anyone unsure of their lift.

Aftercare from day one

Book the first annual service from the start — stair lifts benefit enormously from routine maintenance of batteries, rollers, sensors and fixings. Park on the charge points, keep the rail clear, and report anything unusual early. Weight limits and usage guidance come from the manufacturer's specifications and should be followed by everyone using the lift, every time.

Booking your survey

Call or message us to arrange a survey visit, and tell us whether the staircase is straight or curved, roughly how many steps, and anything unusual about the layout. The survey is where the honest recommendation happens. You pay a booking fee when you book the visit, the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need us, and the full installation cost is quoted and approved before any work starts, with parts quoted separately.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

What our customers say about our mobility & accessibility service

4.5 out of 5 from 8 reviews

Proper job, no upselling

Turned up in the window they promised, walked me through the options (turns out the old fitting was seized and needed careful removal), then cracked on. Everything was tested before they left. No mess, no drama, no surprise on the bill.

Job: Loose or Faulty Brakes

Fine in the end

The problem is fixed, which is the main thing, and the engineer clearly knew what they were doing. It took a fair bit longer than the estimate on the phone and I had to ask twice for a breakdown of the hours.

Job: Stair Lift Service

Would use again

What I appreciated was being told what was actually wrong before anyone started. Sorted in under 70 minutes and the invoice matched the quote to the penny.

Questions people ask about stair lift installation

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

How long does a stair lift installation take?

A straight-rail installation is typically a defined working day; curved rails and complex staircases take longer, and the exact schedule is confirmed in your quote after the survey. We will never promise a delivery or installation date before equipment is confirmed.

Does the rail fix to the wall or the stairs?

To the stair treads — that is standard for straight-rail lifts and is why the installation does not depend on the wall's construction. Curved systems also fix to the stairs. The fixings and their spacing are engineered for the load and installed to the manufacturer's specification.

What happens at the survey?

We measure the staircase and landings, check the layout, doorways and electrics, discuss which manufacturer specifications matter for the intended user — seat size, swivel, weight limits — and give you honest options. Some staircases genuinely suit alternatives better, and we will say so.

Can you advise whether a stair lift is suitable for my mother medically?

No — we do not make medical or clinical judgements, and we do not certify equipment as suitable for anyone's medical needs. Suitability is a matter for the user, their family or carers, and the manufacturer's specifications, with occupational therapists or clinicians where involved. What we do is survey, fit and maintain the equipment properly.

What does installation cost?

You pay a booking fee when you book the survey visit, and labour is charged at an hourly rate that depends on how soon you need us. The full installation is quoted after the survey and nothing starts until you approve that quote, with parts quoted separately within it.
