Removing a stair lift is a bigger job than it looks. The rail is anchored into most of the treads with engineered fixings, the carriage and seat are heavy one-person-awkward assemblies, and there are electrics to isolate and make safe. Done badly, a removal leaves ugly holes, a damaged tread or a lingering socket — done properly, you get your staircase back almost as if the lift was never there.
When removal makes sense
The common reasons: the user has moved or no longer needs the lift; the lift has reached the end of its economic life and a replacement is going in; or a house sale where the lift no longer suits the buyer's plans. Whatever the reason, two questions come first. Is anyone in the household still relying on it — if so, the replacement needs to be planned before the old one comes out. And what condition is the old lift in — a lift in good order may have resale or donation value, while a failed one is a disposal job, and the two paths differ.
How we remove a lift
We isolate and make safe the electrics first — the charger supply and any spur — then dismantle the seat, footplate and carriage per the manufacturer's method, and finally unbolt the rail section by section. Where a replacement lift is going in on a compatible rail, we will assess honestly whether the rail can stay; where not, it comes out. We then deal with the treads: fixing holes are plugged and filled appropriately, and damaged tread surfaces are made good as far as the material allows — we will tell you in the quote what level of making-good is included and where a floor finish might benefit from a decorator's touch afterwards. Everything is quoted in full for your approval before work starts.
Disposal, done properly
We can remove the lift and its packaging as part of the quoted job — stair lifts contain batteries and electronics that should be disposed of responsibly, not left in a skip. Tell us at the quoting stage whether you want the equipment taken away, kept for resale or donation, or set aside for a replacement installation. If the lift might be donated or resold, we will handle it accordingly and let you know honestly if its condition makes that unrealistic.
Replacement at the same time
If a new lift is going in, we will advise whether the same visit works best or whether old-out-then-new-in across two visits suits your household better — there are practical trade-offs on access, disruption and having a working lift every night. The replacement itself is quoted separately as its own project after its own survey.
Safety notes
Please do not attempt DIY removal of a stair lift: the rail fixings are structural, the seat assembly is genuinely heavy, and the electrics need proper isolation. If the lift is still in use by someone in the house, it stays in service until the replacement plan is agreed. And if anyone ever becomes stranded on the old lift before removal day, keep them safe, comfortable and calm, call 999 if they are in pain or distress, and use a manual release only strictly per the manufacturer's instructions by a confident person — never climb under, push or force a suspended lift.
Booking
Call or message us with the make and model, the staircase type and what you want to happen to the equipment afterwards. You pay a booking fee when you book the visit, the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need us, and the full removal cost is quoted and approved before work begins, with parts and making-good detailed within it.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

What our customers say about our mobility & accessibility service
4.5 out of 5 from 8 reviews
Proper job, no upselling
Turned up in the window they promised, walked me through the options (turns out the old fitting was seized and needed careful removal), then cracked on. Everything was tested before they left. No mess, no drama, no surprise on the bill.
Job: Loose or Faulty Brakes
Fine in the end
The problem is fixed, which is the main thing, and the engineer clearly knew what they were doing. It took a fair bit longer than the estimate on the phone and I had to ask twice for a breakdown of the hours.
Job: Stair Lift Service
Would use again
What I appreciated was being told what was actually wrong before anyone started. Sorted in under 70 minutes and the invoice matched the quote to the penny.

Questions people ask about stair lift removal
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Will there be holes left in my stairs afterwards?
The rail is fixed into the treads with screws or bolts, so there will be fixing holes — we plug and fill them and make good the tread surfaces as far as the material allows, with what is included stated clearly in the quote. Most people finish with a light clean-up or a decorator's touch to the tread finishes.
Can you take the old lift away for us?
Yes — removal and responsible disposal, including the batteries and electronics, can be included in the quoted job. Tell us at the quoting stage whether you want it taken away, kept for resale or donation, or set aside for a replacement installation.
Can we remove it ourselves and save the money?
We would advise against it. The rail fixings are structural, the carriage and seat are genuinely heavy and awkward, and the electrics need proper isolation. DIY removals are how treads get damaged and people get hurt — the quoted job covers all of it done properly.
We're having a new lift fitted — can the old one come out the same day?
Often yes, but it depends on the rail compatibility, access and your household's needs — sometimes an overnight gap is more practical than a same-day swap. We will advise the sensible sequence at the quoting stage, and the replacement is quoted as its own project after its survey.
How is removal charged?
You pay a booking fee when you book the visit, and labour is charged at an hourly rate that depends on how soon you need us. The full removal, including making-good and disposal if wanted, is quoted and approved before work starts, with parts quoted separately.
