Installing a ceiling track hoist is a small structural project as much as an electrical and mechanical one. The order of work matters.
What the Survey Covers
We look at the room, the route the person needs to travel and where the track can realistically go. We establish what the ceiling is made of and where the joists or structural members run, because that decides the fixing strategy and possibly the track position. We check head heights and clearances, door swings, light fittings, extract fans and anything else in the track's path. We look at where the charger can be powered from and whether a fused spur is needed. We also consider storage for the sling and the handset, and how the carer will actually use the system day to day. Only then do we agree a layout and a price.
Fixings and Structure
This is the part that cannot be fudged. Tracks are fixed into joists, into a spreader arrangement that distributes load across several joists, or into a structural ceiling — never into plasterboard alone. We confirm the substrate at each fixing point, check the timber is sound, and choose fixings appropriate to it. Where a ceiling cannot safely carry the load in the position the user wants, we say so and offer alternatives: a different route, a spreader plate, or a referral to a builder or structural engineer. That conversation is much cheaper before the track is on the ceiling.
The Track and the Unit
Track is cut and assembled to the agreed route, with joints properly aligned so the trolley runs without a step. Straight runs, corners and any switch sections are assembled as the manufacturer specifies. The motor unit is mounted on the trolley, the spreader bar and sling attachment points fitted, and the charging arrangement installed — a dock, a charging station or a plugged charger depending on the system. Cable routes are planned so nothing hangs where it can be caught, stood on or pulled.
Electrics
Where a charger needs a dedicated supply, we fit a fused spur from an appropriate point, isolate the circuit while working, and test the circuit before handing it back. We do not run a hoist charger from an extension lead as a permanent solution, and we do not take a supply from a bathroom lighting circuit without checking it can carry the load. If the fixed installation needs more than we are competent for, we will say so and coordinate.
Commissioning and Handover
Before anyone is lifted, we run the trolley through the full travel, test the hoist empty, check the brake holds a raised load within the rated capacity, test the emergency stop and the emergency lowering, and confirm the charger brings the battery to full. Then we hand over properly: how to charge it, how to attach the sling at the correct points, what the indicators mean, what to do if it stops, and where the emergency lowering control is. We leave the manual with you and answer questions until they are answered.
What We Cannot Do
We do not decide what equipment a person needs, and we cannot certify an installation as suitable for their clinical or care requirements — that is a matter for the user, their family and carers, the manufacturer's specifications and, where involved, an occupational therapist or social care team. We do not provide loan equipment while an installation is arranged, and we cannot promise a part or a track section will be available on a particular date; we check and tell you honestly.
Safety During the Work
Nobody is lifted on a partly installed system, and we do not test with a person suspended. If an existing hoist fails before the new one is ready, keep the person comfortable and call 999 if they are in pain or distress, and use emergency lowering only as the manufacturer's instructions describe. If an existing hoist is being replaced, it is taken out of service before the new one is commissioned, and we will tell you what the gap means for daily routine so you can plan around it.
Booking the Survey
Tell us the room, roughly where the person needs to travel, the ceiling type if you know it, and whether the equipment has been specified by anyone already. You pay a booking fee when you book, the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit, and the full cost is quoted and approved before work starts — an installation is quoted after the survey, with materials listed separately.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.
Booked 14+ days ahead
£25 booking fee
then £85 per hour of labour
Best value. Book the slot now, pay the smallest booking fee.
Booked within 48 hours
£100 booking fee
then £65 per hour of labour
For jobs that can wait a day or two but not a fortnight.
Same-day call-out
£220 booking fee
then £45 per hour of labour
Urgent problems: standing water, no heat, no power, leaks.

Choose the window that suits you and pay the booking fee. That holds your place in the diary.
We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
A hoist installation is only as good as the survey behind it. Where the track runs, what it is fixed into and how the charger is powered all decide whether the finished system is solid and convenient or awkward and noisy. We would rather spend time at the survey stage than discover at the end that the track crosses a joist in the wrong place.
What our customers say about our mobility & accessibility service
4.5 out of 5 from 8 reviews
Proper job, no upselling
Turned up in the window they promised, walked me through the options (turns out the old fitting was seized and needed careful removal), then cracked on. Everything was tested before they left. No mess, no drama, no surprise on the bill.
Job: Loose or Faulty Brakes
Fine in the end
The problem is fixed, which is the main thing, and the engineer clearly knew what they were doing. It took a fair bit longer than the estimate on the phone and I had to ask twice for a breakdown of the hours.
Job: Stair Lift Service
Would use again
What I appreciated was being told what was actually wrong before anyone started. Sorted in under 70 minutes and the invoice matched the quote to the penny.
Job: Control Panel Fault

Questions people ask about hoist installation
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Can the track be fitted to a normal plasterboard ceiling?
Not on its own. Fixings must reach the joists or a structural member, or be spread across several joists with a plate so the load is distributed. We establish the substrate at the survey. If the ceiling cannot carry the load in the position you want, we will say so and offer alternatives rather than fit something marginal.
What happens at the survey?
We look at the room and the route, identify the joists and ceiling construction, check head heights, clearances and obstructions, and work out where the charger can be powered from. Then we agree a track layout and quote the installation with materials listed separately.
Do you decide which hoist we need?
No. Equipment choice and suitability for a person's needs are matters for them, their family and carers, the manufacturer's specifications and any occupational therapist or care team involved. We install, commission and maintain what has been specified, and we will say if we think an installation cannot be done safely as asked.
Will we be without a hoist during the work?
If we are replacing an existing system, yes for the period between decommissioning the old one and commissioning the new one, and we will tell you how long we expect that to be. Nobody is lifted on a partly installed system, so plan alternative arrangements for that window.
What does an installation cost?
You pay a booking fee when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. Installation is quoted after the survey so the quote reflects the actual route and fixings, and the full cost is approved before work starts, with materials quoted separately.
