Why Boiler Pressure Rises
Pressure in a sealed system should sit comfortably in the manufacturer's cold range and rise modestly as the system heats. When it climbs well beyond that, one of a handful of causes is at work:
- Overfilling — topping the system up too far through the filling loop, or leaving the loop partly open, sets the starting pressure too high so every heating cycle pushes it towards the limit.
- A failed expansion vessel — the vessel's air cushion absorbs expansion as water heats. If the charge is lost or the bladder has burst, the water has nowhere to go, and pressure rises steeply until the safety relief valve discharges.
- A passing filling loop — a valve that is not fully closed lets mains water creep in continuously, pushing pressure up over hours and days.
- Blocked or undersized pipework around the vessel — if the vessel is effectively disconnected from the system by sludge or a closed valve, it cannot do its job even though it is healthy.
- Heat exchanger faults — on combi boilers, a split or blocked plate heat exchanger can pass mains-pressure water into the heating circuit, driving the gauge up whenever hot water is drawn. This is an internal boiler fault that often needs specialist attention.
Why It Matters
High pressure is not just a nuisance reading. The safety relief valve is doing real work each cycle, discharging hot water outside, and valves that discharge repeatedly wear and begin to weep even at normal pressures. Joints, pump seals and radiator seams all live under higher stress than they were designed for. And if the cause is a failed expansion vessel, every heating run is a pressure spike followed by a discharge — a cycle that shortens the life of the whole system. It is also worth knowing that if the relief valve discharges while you are watching it, that is the system protecting itself; the fault is whatever is driving the pressure up, not the valve.
What You Can Safely Do
Bleeding a radiator with the system cool and switched off will lower an overfilled system's pressure a little, and closing the filling loop firmly is always worth checking. Do not discharge pressure through the relief valve deliberately, do not attempt to adjust anything inside the boiler casing, and do not run the system with the gauge pinned high — if pressure climbs rapidly during heating, switch the boiler off at its controls and let it cool, then call us.
How We Diagnose It
We begin with the simple answers: the cold pressure reading, whether the filling loop is fully closed, and whether the system has recently been overfilled. We then test the expansion vessel — a quick check shows whether it holds its air charge — and watch how pressure behaves through a heating run, which distinguishes a vessel problem from a passing water connection. If pressure rises sharply only when hot water taps are used, that points towards the plate heat exchanger inside a combi, which we will confirm as far as is safely possible without opening the gas side. We are not Gas Safe registered and never carry out gas work; our diagnosis stays on the water side and electrics.
Repairs We Carry Out
We can bring an overfilled system back to the correct cold pressure, replace expansion vessels that have lost their charge or burst, clear or restore vessel connections blocked by sludge, and replace worn relief valves on accessible system pipework. Where the cause is the plate heat exchanger or other components inside the boiler, we will explain our findings, and where the work involves gas-side parts we will recommend one of the trusted Gas Safe registered engineers we work closely with to complete it. Any parts needed are quoted separately and confirmed against your boiler's make and model.
Arranging the Visit
Tell us the boiler's make and model, what the gauge reads cold and hot, and whether anything has been discharging outside. Same-day visits may be available but are never promised. A booking fee is paid when you book, the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit, and the full cost is quoted and approved before we start. We serve the whole West Midlands.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
Pressure climbing towards the red on the boiler gauge is the opposite problem to the familiar sagging one, and it worries people just as much. It is usually caused by an overfilled system, an expansion vessel that has lost its charge, or a valve passing water when it should not. We will diagnose which applies, bring the pressure back to specification and repair the underlying cause.
What our customers say about our heating & radiators service
5 out of 5 from 10 reviews
Fast, tidy and friendly
Booked the £220 booking-fee slot on Tuesday and got a message confirming the time the same morning. The cause was explained, the price agreed before any work started, and the job was done in about 46 minutes. Clean and tidy when they left.
Job: No Heating from Boiler
Turned up when they said
What I appreciated was being told what was actually wrong before anyone started. Sorted in under 46 minutes and the invoice matched the quote to the penny.
Job: Expansion Vessel Fault
Exactly what was quoted
I had put off sorting this for months because I expected a runaround. Quoted the booking fee plus hourly rate upfront, stuck to it, and actually found the underlying cause rather than just clearing the symptom. Worked neatly and hoovered up afterwards.

Questions people ask about high boiler pressure
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Is high boiler pressure dangerous?
The system is designed to protect itself — the relief valve discharges before pressure becomes hazardous. But repeatedly running high is harmful to joints, seals and the valve itself, and a gauge climbing rapidly during heating deserves prompt attention. If pressure climbs steeply, switch the boiler off at its controls, let it cool and book a diagnosis.
Can I lower the pressure myself?
With the system cool and off, bleeding a radiator briefly will reduce pressure, and checking the filling loop is fully closed is worthwhile. Do not repeatedly discharge the relief valve, do not open the boiler casing, and do not adjust anything inside the boiler — some of what controls pressure sits behind parts only a qualified engineer should touch.
Why does pressure shoot up only when the heating runs?
That pattern usually means the expansion vessel has lost its air charge, so hot water has nowhere to expand into. Sometimes the vessel is fine but blocked off from the system by sludge. We test the vessel directly and can recharge or replace it, which normally cures the steep rise.
What if the fault is inside the boiler?
On combi boilers a faulty plate heat exchanger can push mains water into the heating circuit and drive the gauge up. If our diagnosis points there or to any gas-side component, we explain what we found and refer you to a trusted Gas Safe registered engineer we work closely with, since we never carry out gas work ourselves.
What will it cost to put right?
You pay a booking fee when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need us. The full cost of the diagnosis and any repair is quoted and approved before work starts. If a replacement expansion vessel or valve is needed, it is identified and quoted separately.
