Why a wall mount is more than drilling four holes

A wall-mounted television gives you back floor space and puts the screen exactly where the room needs it, but the difference between a mount that lasts and one that fails is mostly invisible: the wall behind it, the fixings inside it, and whether the bracket matches the screen. A television is a heavy, awkward object, and its full weight rests on a handful of screws driven into plaster, brick or timber. Get those right and the screen stays rock solid for years. Get them wrong — wrong plug, wrong substrate, wrong spot — and you end up with a tilting screen, damaged plaster or worse. That is why the first task on any mounting visit is not drilling but assessment.

What we assess before anything touches the wall

We start with the wall itself. Different rooms hide different constructions: a solid internal wall may be brick or lightweight block, a newer build may be plasterboard over a timber frame, and a chimney breast or boxed-out alcove has its own brick, possible flues and concealed rubble fills. We check the substrate by sight and by probing where the fixings will go, and we look for the usual warning signs of hidden services — cable routes, socket spurs, pipework near radiators and bathrooms, and any service covers. A detector helps narrow down what is behind the surface, but no scan is a guarantee, so we still verify carefully before drilling and never drill blindly.

Then we look at the hardware. Most customers supply their own television and bracket, and that is normally what we fit unless something else has been agreed. We check that the bracket's fixing pattern matches the back of the screen, that its weight rating comfortably exceeds the television, and that the wall fixings supplied are appropriate for the substrate — if they are not, we will say so and quote suitable fixings separately rather than use whatever happens to be in the box.

How we set it out and fix it

Height and position matter as much as strength. We agree the screen height with you first — eye level for seated viewing suits most rooms — and mark the bracket position with a level so the screen hangs square. We then drill only where we have established a safe fixing, use plugs or anchors matched to the wall, and tighten the bracket to the point the manufacturer specifies, not beyond. The wall plate is checked for movement before the screen goes anywhere near it.

Lifting the television is a two-handed job at minimum, and for larger screens we may ask for a second pair of hands on the day; we flag this when you book so there are no surprises. Once the screen is on, we engage the bracket's safety locks, check the tilt, and confirm the mount feels solid before we tidy up.

Cables, tidiness and what is realistic

Most people want cables out of sight, and there are honest ways to get there. The non-invasive route is slim surface trunking, painted or matched to the wall, which carries power and signal leads down neatly and can be removed later without damage. Routing cables inside the wall is only done where access is agreed beforehand, and it never involves touching electrical wiring — altering circuits is rewiring territory, which sits outside a handyman visit. We will talk through the options on the day and you choose.

Aftercare and what to watch for

A properly fixed mount should not move, creak or sag. If the screen drifts out of level, the bracket develops play, or you notice cracking or dust around the fixings, treat it as a sign to have it checked rather than a nuisance — a small adjustment early is far easier than a repair after a fall. Keep the manufacturer's instructions in case the bracket has serviceable parts you may want to adjust later.

Booking your visit

Same-day slots may be available, and there is always room for a planned visit later in the week. When you book, tell us the wall type if you know it, the screen size and what bracket you have, so we arrive with the right approach and can flag anything unusual before we start. You pay a booking fee on booking, labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit, and the full cost is quoted and approved by you before any work begins. If extra fixings or trunking are needed, those are identified and quoted separately. Tell us when you would like us and we will take it from there.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

A television on the wall clears the floor and puts the picture exactly where you want it, but the difference between a mount that lasts and one that fails is invisible: the wall behind it and the fixings inside it. We assess before we drill, then fit the bracket and hang the screen properly. You end up with a TV that sits square, holds firm and has no mystery holes behind it.

Questions people ask about tv wall mount installation

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Can I mount the TV myself?

You can buy a kit, but the difficult part is knowing what is inside the wall and whether the fixings match it. Plasterboard, brick and lightweight block all need different anchors, and drilling into a hidden pipe or cable is an expensive mistake. If you are confident with a detector, a drill and a level it is achievable, but a visit takes the guesswork out.

What do you actually check before drilling?

We check the wall construction, probe where the fixings will go and look for signs of concealed pipes and cables such as socket spurs and service covers. We also confirm the bracket matches your screen's fixing pattern and weight, then mark out with a level, drill only into safe fixings and hang the screen with its safety locks engaged.

Does a wall scan guarantee there are no pipes or cables behind?

No. A detector helps narrow down what is behind the surface, but it cannot promise nothing is hidden there. We combine detection with visual checks and careful positioning, and if we cannot establish a safe fixing we will stop and talk through alternatives rather than drill blindly.

Who lifts the TV onto the bracket?

Small and medium screens are manageable for one installer, but large screens are heavy and awkward to manoeuvre, so we may ask you to arrange a second pair of hands. We flag this when you book based on the screen size you tell us, so the visit is not held up on the day.

How is the cost worked out?

You pay a booking fee when you book. Labour is charged hourly, and the rate depends on how soon you need the visit — booking further ahead usually works out cheaper. The full cost is quoted and approved by you before work starts, and any fixings or trunking the job needs are identified and quoted separately.
