What the job actually involves

A smart lock replaces the cylinder or deadbolt on an existing door with an electronic unit that opens by keypad, card, fingerprint or phone, depending on the model. There are two broad types: retrofit locks that swap onto a door prepared for a conventional lock, and modules designed for specific multipoint systems. We fit retrofit hardware that is compatible with your door, and we work from the manufacturer's fitting instructions rather than improvising. If your door has a multipoint strip (the kind on most UPVC doors), a standard retrofit smart deadbolt will usually not fit, and we will tell you plainly before you buy anything.

Checking your door first

Compatibility is decided on the door, not in a product description. Before any fitting we measure the door's thickness, check the backset (the distance from the edge to the centre of the lock), inspect the edge preparation and look at how the existing latch and strike line up. A smart lock with a motorised latch needs the door to close and align well; on a door that drops or binds, the motor strains, batteries drain and the lock fails early. So part of the assessment is honest feedback on whether your door is in good enough condition to take the lock at all. We will not confirm compatibility over the phone or promise a specific model will suit before we have seen the door.

How we fit it

Once a suitable lock is agreed, we remove the old hardware, prepare the door exactly as the manufacturer's instructions require, fit the lock and inside unit, and align the strike so the bolt throws fully without forcing. We then test every function with you: locking and unlocking from both sides, the key override, battery access and any codes or cards the model supports. Where the instructions call for specific screw positions, templates or torque, that is what we follow. The lock itself is normally supplied by you, or we can identify suitable models and quote separately if you would rather we arranged it.

What we cannot promise

A smart lock is an electrical product on a network, and we are fitters, not the manufacturer. We do not guarantee app behaviour, Wi-Fi or Bluetooth range, firmware, battery life, cloud availability or anything about the product's cybersecurity; those depend on the maker and your home network. We also do not modify your router or set up online accounts beyond what the manufacturer's instructions cover. Keep the mechanical key somewhere safe but not obvious — every electronic lock should have a fallback, and that key is yours if the battery dies or the app misbehaves.

Preparing and caring for the lock

Have the lock and its batteries on site, and clear the working area around the door so we can lay out parts and work safely. After fitting, follow the maker's guidance on battery type and replacement intervals; weak batteries are the most common cause of faults we see. If you paint or varnish the door later, mask the lock carefully — paint on a keypad or sensor is a real problem. Check the door still closes cleanly as the seasons change; timber moves with humidity, and a door that swells will work the lock harder and shorten its life.

When to call us

If you already own a smart lock and want it fitted properly, or you want an honest view on whether your door can take one, get in touch. We cover the West Midlands, and same-day appointments may be available depending on when you book. There is a booking fee when you reserve a slot, the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit, and the full cost is quoted and agreed with you before any work starts.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

£25 booking fee

then £85 per hour of labour

Best value. Book the slot now, pay the smallest booking fee.

Booked within 48 hours

£100 booking fee

then £65 per hour of labour

For jobs that can wait a day or two but not a fortnight.

Same-day call-out

£220 booking fee

then £45 per hour of labour

Urgent problems: standing water, no heat, no power, leaks.

1

Book the slot

Choose the window that suits you and pay the booking fee. That holds your place in the diary.

2

We diagnose on site

The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.

3

You approve, we work

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

Keyless entry is a genuinely useful upgrade, but only if the lock suits the door it is going on. We check your door's thickness, lock type and condition before fitting, install your chosen retrofit smart lock to the manufacturer's instructions, and test every function with you before we leave. No guesswork, no half-fitted hardware.

Questions people ask about smart lock installation

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Can I fit a smart lock myself?

Many retrofit locks are designed with DIY in mind, and if you are confident with a screwdriver and the instructions are clear, it can work on a straightforward door. It goes wrong on doors with multipoint strips, unusual thicknesses or poor alignment, because a misaligned door makes the motor strain and drains the batteries. We are happy to fit a lock you have already bought, or advise before you buy.

What do you check before fitting a smart lock?

We measure the door's thickness and backset, look at the edge preparation, and check the existing latch, strike and alignment. A smart lock needs a door that closes cleanly, because the motor has to throw the bolt fully every time. If the door needs realignment first, we tell you before fitting anything.

Do you guarantee the app and network features will work?

No, and any fitter who promises that is overpromising. App behaviour, Wi-Fi or Bluetooth range, firmware updates and battery life depend on the manufacturer and your home network, and we make no guarantees about connectivity or cybersecurity. We fit and test the hardware to the manufacturer's instructions, and the mechanical key override remains your fallback.

What happens if the battery dies or the Wi-Fi drops?

Check before buying that your model has a mechanical key override — nearly all reputable ones do — and keep the key somewhere safe but not obvious. Batteries are the most common cause of faults, so follow the maker's guidance on type and replacement. If your lock relies on your Wi-Fi, remote features stop when the network does, though local keypad or key access usually still works.

How much does smart lock installation cost?

You pay a booking fee when you reserve the slot, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. Before any work starts we quote the full cost and you approve it. The lock itself is normally supplied by you; if you would like us to identify and source a suitable model, that is quoted separately.
