A fault that comes and goes

Intermittent operation can mean the light works after several presses, flickers as the rocker moves, or responds only when the plate is touched. These symptoms are often linked to worn contacts or a connection that is no longer secure, but the switch itself is not always at fault. A lamp, fitting, cable connection or multi-way switching arrangement may also cause the same pattern. Because the fault is unpredictable, it helps to describe exactly what you have noticed.

Note whether the light fails when first switched on, goes out after a while, or flickers while the rocker is held in position. Report any crackling, buzzing, unusual warmth, smell, recent lamp changes or circuit trips. Do not keep operating the switch to reproduce the problem if it is noisy, hot, sparking or smells burnt. In those circumstances, stop using it and turn off the circuit at the consumer unit if you can do so safely.

Why the behaviour can vary

A switch contains moving contacts that can wear with use. If the contact surfaces are damaged, the electrical connection may be inconsistent. A conductor that has loosened at a terminal can also make or break contact as the switch or cable moves. The problem may be more noticeable after a light has been on for a while, when the parts have warmed, or when another switch in the same arrangement is used.

In a two-way setup, two switches operate one light from separate locations. A failure at either switch or in the connecting conductors can make operation confusing: the light may respond in one position but not another. A dimmer or smart control can introduce further compatibility and wiring questions. We ask about the controls involved and what each one does, rather than assuming a basic single switch.

How we trace an intermittent fault

The electrician begins with your description and checks which fittings and controls are affected. They isolate the circuit before opening a switch and inspect the mechanism, terminals, cable condition and back box. Testing helps locate whether continuity changes at the switch or whether the fault lies elsewhere. If the issue has not appeared during the visit, the pattern you report still helps decide which checks are appropriate; no one should ask you to deliberately create a spark or overheating condition.

Where several controls are involved, the electrician maps how they operate the light and checks their connections as part of the diagnosis. The goal is to separate a worn device from a wiring fault and to identify any heat or insulation damage. If further access or investigation is needed, we’ll explain why and quote the proposed work before continuing. Replacing the first switch without testing can leave an intermittent fault unresolved.

Fixing the underlying problem

A worn or unreliable switch is replaced with a compatible device. If a loose terminal or damaged conductor is responsible, that connection must be repaired and any affected components assessed. A fault at the fitting or elsewhere on the circuit requires attention there instead. The electrician will tell you what has been found, what needs doing and the full cost before work starts.

After repair, the electrician checks that the switch operates consistently and that the circuit is suitable to return to use. Where the symptom depends on a particular control sequence, they test the arrangement with you. If the problem needs parts or further investigation, we’ll explain whether the circuit should remain off. Avoid using a switch that still crackles, becomes hot or flickers after the visit; report any continuing symptom so it can be assessed.

What you can safely check

You can note which switch positions and lights are affected, and check whether a user-replaceable bulb has failed if there are no warning signs. Turn the light off and allow the fitting to cool before changing a bulb. Do not remove switch plates or attempt to tighten terminals. If the switch is loose, noisy, hot, sparking or giving off an odour, stop using it and isolate the circuit if safe.

Book an intermittent-switch diagnosis

Maintenance Men visits homes across the West Midlands for electrical fault-finding and repairs. Tell us what the switch does, how often the fault occurs and whether other switches control the same light. We’ll inspect and test the relevant parts, explain the likely cause and agree the work with you. Book a visit to get a recurring switch fault properly investigated.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site

The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.

3

You approve, we work

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

A switch that works only sometimes can leave you unsure whether a light is safe to rely on. The cause may be a worn mechanism, loose connection or fault elsewhere in the circuit. We investigate when and how the problem occurs, then explain the repair before replacing parts or disturbing the wiring.

What our customers say about our electrical service

4.6 out of 5 from 11 reviews

Does what it says on the tin

No complaints about the work itself — clear explanation, sensible advice, fair price. Booking online was easy enough once I found the right job page.

Job: Smoke Alarm Replacement

Fixed it, but took longer than expected

Work itself was fine and tidy. Communication beforehand was patchy — I did not get the confirmation message and had to ring to check the slot. Would still use again.

Job: Flickering Outdoor Lights

Turned up when they said

Third time we have used Maintenance Men, and the same experience each time: agreed price, proper explanation, job done in one visit. The hourly rate is fair for the standard of work.

Questions people ask about intermittent switch operation

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Can I repair the switch myself?

You can check a normal replaceable bulb if the fitting is cool and there are no warning signs. Do not open the switch or keep operating it if it is hot, noisy, sparking or smells burnt; leave electrical testing to an electrician.

What will the electrician check?

They’ll ask what the controls and light do, isolate the circuit, inspect the switch and connections, then test the relevant wiring and any linked switches to locate where operation becomes unreliable. They’ll also consider whether the fault is reproducible from each control position.

Could this be an electrical safety issue?

Intermittent operation can come from a worn contact or loose connection, which may deteriorate further. Treat heat, crackling, sparks, a burning smell or tripping as urgent; turn off the circuit if safe.

How much will the repair cost?

You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how quickly you need us. The full cost of the work is quoted before we start, so you approve it before any tools come out.

Should I replace the switch if it works after a few presses?

Not before the cause is checked. A worn switch is one possibility, but loose wiring or a fault at the fitting can behave similarly and would remain if only the switch were changed.
