The timing gives a clue

A trip immediately when an appliance is connected can suggest a short or earth leakage; a trip after it has been running may point to heat, moisture, an intermittent fault or cumulative demand. The pattern is useful, but it cannot prove the appliance is at fault. A socket, circuit or protective device may behave similarly. Do not keep switching the item on to reproduce the event. If the appliance caused a trip once, leave it unplugged until the electrician has assessed the installation.

What to note before the visit

Write down the appliance type, when it last worked normally, whether it was heating, spinning or starting up when the trip occurred, and which fuse-box switch moved. Mention any water leak, unusual smell, noise or visible cable damage. Do not dismantle the appliance or its plug. If the plug or socket is hot, scorched or sparking, avoid touching it and switch off the circuit only if safe. A fixed appliance should not be disconnected by removing wiring yourself.

Checking appliance versus installation

The electrician identifies the affected circuit and tests the consumer unit and wiring to check for an installation fault. They inspect the socket or connection and consider the appliance symptoms. Appropriate tests can show whether the circuit is safe and whether the protective device is responding to a fault. A domestic electrician's assessment does not necessarily amount to a full internal repair of every appliance; some appliances need a specialist repairer or replacement. The engineer explains the likely boundary and what should remain disconnected.

Repairing the right part

If a wiring fault or damaged socket is found, the electrician can discuss repair of the installation. If the circuit tests satisfactorily but the appliance appears to cause the trip, keep it unplugged and arrange service from the appliance manufacturer or repair specialist. A breaker should not be replaced simply to tolerate a faulty appliance. Any electrical work is explained and priced before it starts; the circuit is tested after the repair. Do not reconnect the suspected appliance until advised that it is safe to do so.

Avoid unsafe workarounds

Do not use an extension lead to put the suspect appliance on a different circuit as a test. That can expose another circuit to the same fault and make diagnosis less clear. Never bypass a protective device, use a higher-rated fuse or hold a breaker in place. If the trip occurred while several appliances were running, the combined load may need review, but a repeated trip with only one item still warrants diagnosis. Keep the appliance away from water and do not use it if its cable is damaged.

After the visit

Ask whether the electrician found an issue with the circuit, socket or consumer unit and what evidence pointed to the appliance. Follow the recommendation about leaving the item disconnected. If a repaired circuit trips again without the appliance, stop using it and report the change. If a repairer later services the appliance, tell them that it operated the household protective device and describe the conditions. This helps avoid putting a possibly faulty item back into service without checking.

Book a trip investigation

If an appliance repeatedly trips the power, have the circuit checked and keep the item unplugged in the meantime. Same-day and emergency appointments may be available. The booking fee is paid when booking; labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on the requested timing. We quote the full cost before work begins so you can approve it first.

The circuit can be checked without forcing a trip

The engineer does not need you to repeat a risky test to gather useful information. Details such as whether the breaker moved as soon as the appliance started, or only after it had run, can help guide checks. If the appliance has a detachable plug and it is cool and undamaged, keep it unplugged until the circuit has been assessed.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

You approve, we work

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

If power trips when one appliance is switched on, the appliance may have developed an internal fault, but the socket or circuit could also be responsible. We safely check the affected circuit and use the timing of the trip to narrow down the cause, so you know whether the item must stay unplugged or the home wiring needs repair.

Questions people ask about appliance causing power trip

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Can I plug the appliance into another room to test it?

No. That may expose another circuit to the same fault. Leave the appliance unplugged and tell the electrician what happened.

What will the electrician check when an appliance trips power?

They test the affected circuit and consumer unit, inspect the socket or connection, and consider whether the symptoms point to the appliance. Some appliance repairs need a separate specialist.

Is it dangerous to keep using the appliance?

It may be, particularly if there is a damaged lead, burning smell, heat or repeated tripping. Stop using it until the fault has been assessed.

Will the electrician repair the appliance itself?

The visit can establish whether the circuit or installation is at fault and may identify an appliance as the trigger. Internal appliance repair may need a specialist repairer or replacement.')],

How is the visit and repair charged?

You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how quickly you need us. The full cost of the work is quoted before we start, so you approve it before any tools come out.
