The drum turns, the air moves, the timer counts down, but the load is still damp and the inside of the machine stays cool. That pattern tells us the motor and controls are working and the fault sits in the heating side: the element or heater assembly, the thermostats that regulate it, the thermal cut-out that protects it, or the relay and board that switch it on.

A quick check on settings and load

Before assuming a fault, confirm the programme is not set to air-dry, cool-down or a refresh cycle that deliberately runs without heat. Check the fabric setting, because some low-temperature programmes feel barely warm. A very small load in a large drum can also feel cooler than expected. If the machine is a vented model, look at the vent hose at the back for a kink or a crushed section, and clean the lint filter, since restricted airflow can trip thermal protection and leave you with no heat at all.

What the visit covers

We measure the supply to the heater with the machine running, test the element or heater assembly for continuity and insulation, check the cycling thermostat and the thermal cut-out, and confirm that the board is commanding the heater relay. On condensing models we also check that the condenser and its airflow path are clear, because a blocked condenser can cause the machine to cut heat as a protective measure. Each test removes one possibility, which is why we can usually name the failed part on the first visit.

Typical causes

A broken element is the classic answer on vented machines, often after several years of use. Thermal fuses and cut-outs blow when airflow has been poor, so replacing one without clearing the cause simply repeats the failure. Thermostats drift and open early, relays stick open, and on some boards the heater output fails while everything else continues to work. On heat-pump dryers there is no element at all, and the equivalent faults sit in the compressor, the fan or the sensors, which changes both the diagnosis and the cost.

Gas-heated dryers

A small number of vented dryers are heated by gas. We do not work on gas components, gas valves, burners or flues, and we are not a Gas Safe registered business. If your dryer is gas heated, we can look at the non-gas electrical and airflow side and will refer any gas-side fault to a Gas Safe registered engineer. We will never ask you to open a gas appliance or attempt a repair on it yourself.

Repair, parts and cost

Elements, thermostats and thermal cut-outs are usually available and reasonably priced, though it depends on the brand and the age of the machine. Heat-pump components are far more expensive and sometimes not worth fitting to an older unit. Parts are identified from the model plate, quoted separately and only ordered once you have approved the price. We will not tell you a part is guaranteed to be in stock, and if the lead time is long we will say so up front.

Safety and aftercare

Never bypass a thermal cut-out or fit a fuse of a higher rating to keep a dryer running. Those devices exist because lint and heat are a genuine fire risk, and a machine that has overheated once may have scorched wiring you cannot see. After the repair, run a cycle with a normal load and check the laundry actually dries rather than merely warming. Clean the filter after every use and have the vent checked periodically.

Booking the visit

Tell us the fuel type, the brand and model, whether the machine is vented, condensing or heat pump, and how long the cycle runs before you notice the load is cold. If the dryer is tripping the electrics or smells hot, say so, because that changes the urgency and the safety advice we give you.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

1

Book the slot

Choose the window that suits you and pay the booking fee. That holds your place in the diary.

2

We diagnose on site

The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.

3

You approve, we work

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

A dryer that turns and turns but leaves everything cold is doing half its job, and the laundry comes out damp after a full cycle. Heat loss has a small number of likely causes and they are all testable, so there is no need to guess or start replacing components at random. The visit isolates the failed link in the heater circuit and tells you what it will take to restore proper drying.

Questions people ask about tumble dryer not heating

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Could it just be a setting rather than a fault?

Sometimes. Air-dry, cool-down and low-heat programmes run without much heat, and a very small load can feel cool. Check the programme and fabric setting, clean the filter and inspect the vent hose before booking.

What do you test to find the cause?

We check the supply to the heater, the element or heater assembly, the cycling thermostat, the thermal cut-out and the relay or board output. On condensing models the condenser and airflow path are checked as well.

Is it safe to keep using a dryer with no heat?

Running it is not usually dangerous because no heat is being produced, but if a thermal cut-out has blown there may be an underlying airflow or wiring problem. Do not bypass any thermal protection or fit a higher-rated fuse.

My dryer is gas heated. Can you repair it?

We can assess the electrical, airflow and control side, but we do not work on gas valves, burners, flues or any gas component and we are not Gas Safe registered. Any gas-side fault is referred to a Gas Safe registered engineer.

How do you price the work?

The booking fee is paid when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. We quote the full cost and you approve it before work starts. Parts are identified and quoted separately, so no figure is guessed in advance.
