Excessive vibration is often the least alarming dryer fault and the easiest to correct, but it should not be ignored. A machine that shakes constantly puts strain on the drum bearings, the door catch and the fixings, and it can damage flooring or nearby units. The cause is usually one of four things: the machine is not level, the load is unbalanced, something inside has worn, or the floor and surrounding structure are amplifying normal movement.

Start with the load

A single heavy item, such as a bath towel or a pair of jeans, can ball up and sit on one side of the drum, producing violent movement at certain speeds. Try a load of several similar items and see whether the shaking reduces. Overloading has the opposite effect and also causes vibration. On heat-pump and condensing models, check that the machine has not been pushed against a wall or worktop, since contact transmits vibration.

Levelling and feet

With the machine switched off, try to rock it gently at the corners. If it moves, a foot is not bearing weight. Adjust the front feet until the machine sits firm with no rocking, then tighten the lock nuts. Check that all four feet are present, because one missing foot is a common find after a house move or a kitchen refit. A very uneven floor may need a firm board underneath rather than endless adjustment.

What we check on the visit

We confirm the machine is level front to back and side to side, inspect the feet and their threads, and check whether the drum assembly sits correctly on its suspension. On machines with springs and dampers, worn dampers allow the drum to bounce far more than it should, and a broken spring produces a distinctive lopsided thump. We also check the drum for balance, look for loose counterweights or fixings, and confirm that no foreign object is resting against the drum.

When it is a genuine repair

Worn drum bearings, failed suspension dampers, broken springs and loose motor mounts are real faults that will not respond to levelling. On some models these are serviceable at reasonable cost; on others the drum and bearing are one assembly. We will tell you which situation you are in and what the realistic options are, including leaving it alone if the movement is minor and the machine is otherwise working.

Installation matters more than people expect

A dryer on a suspended wooden floor will always transmit some movement, and a machine installed tight into a recess with no clearance can shake the units around it. If the appliance was recently moved, check that any transit fixings have been removed and that the feet were reset afterwards. New machines are particularly prone to vibration until the first few loads have settled the drum.

Safety points

Do not run the machine with the feet wound fully out or with packing underneath to stop the rocking, because it can tip or move during a cycle. Do not open the casing to look at the suspension yourself; springs and dampers are under load. If the machine has moved far enough to strain the cable or the vent hose, unplug it and check the cable for damage before anything else.

After the visit

Run a normal mixed load and watch the machine at the start of the spin phase. Some movement is normal for a dryer; walking across the floor is not. Re-check the feet after a week, since they can settle, and keep the load sizes sensible. If the machine still moves after levelling and a load check, the suspension is the next thing to examine.

Booking the visit

Tell us whether the machine moves across the floor or simply vibrates in place, whether it happens with every load, and whether it started after a move or a new installation. Give us the brand and model, and mention if the floor is wooden or if the dryer sits in a tight recess.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

You approve, we work

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

A dryer that walks across the floor or rattles the cupboard beside it is annoying and, over time, hard on its own bearings and fixings. Movement usually comes from installation rather than failure: an unlevel floor, a foot that has wound down, or a load that has balled into one side of the drum. The visit separates those ordinary causes from worn suspension parts.

Questions people ask about tumble dryer vibrating excessively

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Can I fix the shaking myself?

Often yes. Check the load for a single heavy item, make sure the machine does not touch the wall or units, and adjust the feet until it sits firm without rocking. If it still moves with a balanced load, a component has probably worn.

What do you check during the visit?

We check levelling in both directions, the condition of the feet, the drum suspension springs and dampers, the drum balance and any loose fixings or counterweights. We also look for objects resting against the drum.

Could the movement damage the machine?

Yes. Constant shaking strains the drum bearings, door catch and fixings, and can damage the floor or adjacent units. If the machine has shifted enough to pull the cable or vent hose, unplug it and have the cable checked.

Is it worth repairing worn suspension?

It depends on the model and the cost of the parts. Dampers and springs are serviceable on many machines at reasonable cost, while some models require a drum assembly. We give you the comparison before you commit.

How is the price worked out?

A booking fee is paid when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost is quoted and approved by you before any work begins, with any parts identified and priced separately.
