An iron is a heating appliance with a water system attached, which is why its failures tend to fall into two families: heat faults and steam faults. Sometimes both appear at once, because scale affects the element and the steam passages in the same way. Working out which has failed determines whether the repair is a descale, a thermostat or an element.
Heat faults
If the iron does not heat at all, the element circuit or the thermostat is the likely cause. If it heats but the soleplate temperature is uneven, part of the element may have failed or the soleplate may be distorted. If it overheats and scorches fabric, the thermostat contacts may have welded, which is a genuine safety issue rather than an inconvenience. If the indicator light behaves oddly — never coming on, or staying on permanently — that is a strong hint that the thermostat is not switching.
Steam faults and scale
Steam problems are almost always scale. Hard water leaves calcium deposits in the steam chamber, the passages and the soleplate vents, so steam becomes weak, sputters, or stops entirely. In the worst case a scaled chamber sprays chalky deposits onto fabric. A steam valve or pump that has failed produces a similar result, and on some models the anti-calc cartridge needs replacing rather than descaling. A leaking soleplate usually means a perished gasket or a cracked chamber, and dripping water onto fabric is not something to live with.
What the visit covers
The iron is unplugged and cooled. We test the element for continuity and insulation to earth, check the thermostat's switching behaviour against temperature, inspect the soleplate for distortion and vent blockage, examine the steam chamber and valve, and check the flex for heat damage at the entry point — irons flex their cables constantly and that is a common failure point. Where scale is the cause, we establish whether descaling will resolve it or whether a part has failed behind the scale.
Descaling an iron properly
Descaling an iron is a user-level task if the maker provides a method: use the recommended solution, follow the sequence, flush thoroughly and clean the soleplate vents afterwards. What people get wrong is using vinegar at strength, leaving solution in the chamber, or descaling a hot iron. Never immerse an iron, never fill above the maximum, and never use a descaling product not intended for irons — some are corrosive to the internal seals. If the iron has an anti-calc cartridge, replace it rather than descaling around it.
Repair decisions
Thermostats, elements and gaskets are replaceable on many irons, and a thermostat or seal is usually worth doing. Elements are more variable, and on a low-cost iron the economics often point to replacement. We identify the part for your model, confirm availability and quote it separately. An iron that has scorched fabric through a stuck thermostat, or one with a cracked water chamber, is not a candidate for a cheap fix.
Safety notes
Unplug before filling, emptying or cleaning, and let the iron cool standing upright, never resting on its soleplate. Store it with the water emptied if the maker advises it. If the flex is damaged, or the plug or cord entry is hot or scorched, stop using it — an iron's cable is under constant flexing stress and damaged insulation is a shock risk. Do not use an iron that trips the RCD.
Booking
Book online with the make and model, and say whether the problem is heat, steam, leaking or all three. The booking fee is paid when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost is quoted and approved before work begins, with parts identified and quoted separately.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
An iron that will not heat, heats unevenly, or has stopped producing steam is usually suffering from scale, a failed element or a thermostat that no longer switches correctly. These faults are testable, and the fix is often simpler than replacing the iron. We check the heat and steam systems together, since the two share the same water and scale problems.

Questions people ask about iron not heating properly
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Can I descale the iron myself?
If the maker provides a descaling method, yes, using their recommended product and following it exactly. Never use neat vinegar or immerse the iron, and replace an anti-calc cartridge rather than trying to descale around it.
What will you test?
The element for continuity and insulation, the thermostat's switching and temperature behaviour, the soleplate for distortion and blocked vents, the steam chamber and valve, and the flex at its entry point. The iron is unplugged and cooled before testing begins.
The iron scorches fabric even on a low setting. Is that dangerous?
It suggests the thermostat is not switching and the soleplate is running hotter than the setting says. Stop using it on fabric until it has been checked, because a stuck thermostat is a fire risk as well as a damage risk.
It drips water onto clothes instead of steaming. Can that be fixed?
Often yes — a perished gasket, a scaled valve or a cracked chamber are the usual causes. Whether it is economic depends on the model and the part, which we can establish on the visit.
What is the pricing?
The booking fee is paid when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. We quote the full cost and you approve it before any work starts; parts are identified and priced separately.
