Slow filling is an easy fault to ignore because the machine still completes a cycle. The programme simply takes longer, the wash may be weaker, and eventually the machine stops partway through because it never reached the level it expected within its allowed time. Catching it at the slow stage usually means a clean or a cheap part rather than a failed cycle.

How slow is slow

A normal fill takes a couple of minutes and is audible as steady running water. If yours now trickles, pulses, or stops and restarts, note roughly how long it takes from pressing start to hearing the wash begin. That figure is genuinely useful, because it tells us whether the restriction is mild or close to stalling the machine.

Where the restriction sits

The water path is short but has several narrow points:

  • the isolating valve under the sink, which may be partly closed
  • the mesh strainer at the inlet connection, which collects grit and scale
  • the fill hose, which can kink behind the machine or scale internally
  • the inlet valve's internal filter and seat
  • the valve itself, which can open only partially

Working from the supply end backwards is both cheaper and quicker. A partly closed valve costs nothing to correct. A blocked strainer costs nothing but a clean.

Why hard water matters here

In areas with hard water, scale builds on the strainer and inside the valve seat. The restriction develops gradually, which is why the change is often noticed only in hindsight. If your kettle scales quickly, your inlet strainer probably does too, and it is worth checking periodically as part of normal upkeep.

What the visit involves

We confirm the supply valve is fully open, disconnect the fill hose at the appliance end and inspect the strainer, then check flow through the hose. If the hose is clear and the strainer clean, we test the valve for full opening and measure how much water passes in a set time. That measurement separates a valve that is partially blocked from one that is failing electrically.

Where the valve is scaled or partially seized, replacement is usually the reliable answer rather than cleaning, because a cleaned seat often restricts again. We quote that before fitting.

What this is not

A slow fill is not a drainage problem, and treating it as one leads nowhere. Nor is it a sign that the machine needs a new pump. If you have been told it needs a pump because it fills slowly, that is worth a second opinion.

Water and power

Any work at the inlet connection needs the water off at the appliance valve and the power off at the socket, both of which must be safely reachable. If the isolating valve will not close properly, we will not work on a live wet connection; we will stop and explain what needs doing first. If you have noticed damp around the connection or the plug, leave the machine off and mention it when booking.

Aftercare

After clearing or replacing the restriction we time a fill again so you can see the difference, and check the connection for weeping with the machine back in place. Run a cycle at the sink afterwards and look under the cabinet for damp, which is a sensible check after any work on a water joint.

When to book rather than wait

Book if the fill has slowed noticeably, if the machine has started timing out or stopping early, or if you have had a cycle fail to complete more than once. A slow fill that becomes a no-fill is a more expensive fix than the restriction itself.

Have the brand and model ready, and tell us roughly how long the fill takes and whether the machine has ever stopped mid-cycle. Book online, with the booking fee paid at the time of booking; the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit, and the full cost is quoted and approved by you before work starts.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

A dishwasher that takes far longer than it used to before the wash begins is usually telling you the water path is narrowing. It still works, which is why people live with it, but a restricted fill tends to get worse and can end in a machine that times out before it has enough water. It is one of the more straightforward things to put right.

Questions people ask about slow water fill in dishwasher

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Can I clean the inlet strainer myself?

If the fill hose connection is easily reachable, turning off the appliance valve and rinsing the small mesh strainer is reasonable. If the valve will not close or the connection is behind fitted units, leave it and book instead.

Does a slow fill mean the pump is failing?

No. Fill and circulation are separate systems, and slow filling points at the supply path, not the pump. If you have been given a pump diagnosis for this symptom, it is worth having it checked properly.

What will you check on the visit?

We confirm the supply valve is fully open, inspect the strainer and hose, test the inlet valve for full opening, and measure the volume passed in a set time. That tells us whether the restriction is debris, scale or the valve itself.

Is it safe to keep using it while it's slow?

It will keep working for a while, but repeated timeouts and incomplete cycles are the usual next stage. If you see any water at the connection or near the plug, stop using it and isolate the power.

What will I be charged?

The booking fee is taken when you book. The hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. We quote the full cost and you approve it before work starts, with any parts such as an inlet valve quoted separately.
