Pressing start and getting nothing, or getting a false start followed by silence, is one of the most common dishwasher complaints. The machine is not simply being difficult. It runs a fixed sequence at the beginning of every cycle and will not go further until each step confirms. Finding which step fails is most of the diagnosis.
The start sequence, in order
A dishwasher will typically:
- confirm the door is latched
- check the base tray for water
- open the inlet valve and bring in a measured quantity of water
- confirm the water level has been reached
- start the circulation pump and begin the wash
- heat, drain, rinse and repeat
A machine that does nothing at all has failed at step one or two. A machine that hums, clicks and stops has usually failed at three or four. A machine that washes but never advances is looking at five or six, or at the timer logic itself.
Reading the error code properly
Most machines flash a pattern or show a short code. That code is the manufacturer's note about which step failed, and it is worth writing down before the visit, along with how many flashes and in what rhythm. Codes are model-specific, so the same two-digit code can mean different things on different brands. We look it up against your model rather than working from memory.
If the display is dark and only lights flash, count the sequence. If the machine beeps, note how many times. That detail frequently saves a diagnostic step.
What commonly blocks the start
- Door not registering as closed. A worn catch, a misaligned hinge or a build-up on the strike plate can leave the interlock open while the door looks shut.
- Water in the base tray. The anti-flood float lifts and the machine refuses to start as a protective measure. This is a symptom of a leak somewhere, not a fault in itself.
- No water reaching the machine. A closed supply valve, a kinked fill hose or a blocked inlet filter will stall the cycle at the fill stage.
- Fill not confirmed. A pressure switch or flow meter that has drifted will leave the machine waiting for water it has already taken in.
- Control logic fault. Less common, but a board that cannot read its inputs will sit at the first step indefinitely.
What we do on the visit
We start by reproducing the fault and observing where the sequence stops, because a fault that only appears on one programme is informative. The door interlock is tested for continuity in the latched position. The base tray is checked for standing water. The inlet supply is confirmed open, the filter mesh at the connection inspected, and the fill volume observed. Only after those are cleared do we move to the pressure sensing and the board.
We isolate power and water at the start of work where the job requires it, and only where it is safe to do so. If there is water in the base or around the electrics, we isolate before touching anything and will tell you what we found.
Repair, or something simpler
A fair share of these calls end with a clean rather than a part. Debris on the door strike, a blocked inlet strainer or a base tray that needs drying out after a slow seep can all produce a machine that will not start. Where a part is needed, the interlock, inlet valve and pressure switch are the usual candidates, and availability varies by model. We quote the part separately once identified and only proceed with your agreement.
If the fault is in the main board and the machine is older, replacement may be the better value. We will put both numbers in front of you rather than deciding for you.
Aftercare and what to watch
After the repair we run a full short programme end to end, confirming fill, wash, drain and completion without a code returning. If the cause was water in the base tray, ask what leaked, because the tray filling is the machine protecting itself from a fault that has not gone away. Drying the tray alone is not a repair.
Booking
Have your brand, model number, the programme you were using, the flash pattern or code, and a description of how far the cycle gets. That is enough for us to arrive prepared. Book online and the booking fee is paid at that point; the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit, and the full cost is quoted and approved by you before work starts.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.
Booked 14+ days ahead
£25 booking fee
then £85 per hour of labour
Best value. Book the slot now, pay the smallest booking fee.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
You select a programme, press start, and nothing happens, or the machine begins and gives up a few minutes in. Either way the machine is refusing to progress through a sequence it was designed to follow, and the point at which it stops tells us a great deal. We use that behaviour rather than guesswork to narrow the fault.

Job: Tumble Dryer Not Starting Cycle
Good job, slightly late
Solid work. Hourly rate feels fair for the amount of work involved and everything was tested before they left. Would book again.
Job: Toaster Not Working
No mess left behind
Really straightforward. It had been bothering us for weeks; diagnosed properly, fixed the same visit, and the price was exactly what was explained when booking. Can not fault it.

Questions people ask about dishwasher not starting cycle
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Can I reset the machine and try again myself?
Yes, a power cycle is a reasonable first step and costs nothing. Switch it off at the socket for a minute and back on. If the same thing happens on the same programme, that pattern is useful information rather than something to keep repeating.
Which programmes will you test?
We reproduce the fault on the programme you were using, then try a different one, because a fault confined to a single programme points somewhere different from a fault on all of them. That comparison shapes the rest of the diagnosis.
There is water in the base of the machine. Can I still use it?
No. Water in the base tray means something has leaked, and the machine is refusing to start as protection. Isolate the power at the socket if it is safe to reach and leave the machine off until it has been looked at.
What if it's just a blocked filter?
Then it is a clean, not a repair, and we will say so. We check the inlet strainer and the internal filter as part of the diagnosis, and we will not present a clean as a parts job.
What does a visit cost?
You pay the booking fee when you book. The hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit, with shorter-notice slots costing more than routine ones. We quote the full cost and you approve it before work begins; any parts are identified and priced separately.
