The fill stage is short but decisive. The machine opens its inlet valve, takes in a measured volume, and waits for confirmation before it will wash. If any part of that chain fails, the cycle stops early and the dishes come out exactly as they went in, often with the detergent tablet still intact in the dispenser.

Symptoms that point at fill

  • the programme starts, runs for a minute or two, then stops
  • no sound of water entering the machine
  • the bottom of the tub is dry after a failed cycle
  • a code or flash pattern appears shortly after start
  • the machine fills very slowly and then times out

If the tub does contain water but the machine still will not wash, the problem is downstream of the fill and the diagnosis changes completely.

Supply-side causes first

Before anything internal is considered, the water supply has to be confirmed. Dishwashers are often connected to a dedicated isolating valve under the sink, and that valve gets closed during other plumbing work and never reopened. A flexible fill hose can also kink when the machine is pushed back, particularly if it has been moved recently for flooring or a cupboard repair.

The inlet connection contains a small mesh strainer. In hard water areas, or after mains work, that strainer can collect grit and scale and restrict flow to a trickle. It is a cheap and common cause, and it is checked early for exactly that reason.

The inlet valve

The valve is a solenoid that opens on command from the board. It fails in two ways: electrically open circuit, so it never opens, or mechanically stuck, so it opens weakly or not at all. A valve that has failed electrically usually produces no click at all when the programme starts. One that is stuck may click and still pass nothing.

We test the coil for continuity and confirm whether the board is sending the signal. That distinction matters, because a valve that is fine but not being commanded is a board fault, and replacing the valve would be wasted money.

Fill detection

Newer machines measure fill by pressure switch, flow meter or a combination. When the sensor drifts, the machine may overfill slightly, underfill, or fill correctly and still believe it has not. Overfilling can trigger the base tray float and shut the machine down, which links this fault to leak symptoms. We check the pressure chamber and its hose for blockages, since a blocked sensing hose reads as a permanent low level.

What we do not do

We do not alter your household plumbing beyond the appliance's own accessible connection. If the isolating valve is seized, weeping, or the supply pipework needs changing, that is plumbing work and we will tell you rather than improvising. If the machine needs a new connection point or a longer run, that is a separate job with its own scope.

Water and power isolation

Where the work involves the inlet valve or the connection itself, water is isolated at the appliance valve and power at the socket before anything is disturbed, provided both are safely accessible. If the valve will not close, we isolate at the mains stopcock or leave the job for a plumber rather than working live on a wet connection. If you can see water tracking near the plug or the machine's electrics, leave the machine off and tell us when booking.

Repair versus replace

Inlet valves are commonly available and usually a straightforward swap, though access differs a lot between models and some require the machine to be pulled and tipped. Pressure switches and flow meters are more model-specific and may need ordering. We quote the part once identified, with your approval before fitting.

If the machine has a board fault that is not commanding the valve, the cost comparison changes and we will say so plainly.

Aftercare

After replacement we run a cycle and watch the fill, confirm the machine advances past the fill stage, and check the connection for weeping before the machine goes back into the run. Check underneath the sink a day later for any damp at the connection, which is a normal thing to verify after work on a joint.

Booking

Tell us your brand and model, whether you can hear water entering at all, and whether the supply valve under the sink is open. Book online, pay the booking fee at the time of booking, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost is quoted and approved by you before work starts.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

2

We diagnose on site

The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.

3

You approve, we work

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

A dishwasher that runs but never gets wet, or that clicks and stops after a minute, is usually failing at the fill stage. Sometimes the supply is simply off, sometimes the valve has stuck, and sometimes the machine is taking water it cannot detect. The distinction matters because only one of those needs a part.

Questions people ask about dishwasher not filling with water

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Could it just be the water valve under the sink?

Very often, yes. The isolating valve is frequently left closed after other plumbing work. Check whether it is open and whether the fill hose is kinked behind the machine before booking a visit.

How do you tell a valve fault from a board fault?

We test the valve coil for continuity and check whether the board is sending voltage to it when the programme starts. A good valve with no command is a board issue; a valve with a command but no water is a valve issue.

Can I use the machine in the meantime?

If it is not filling, running it achieves nothing and may leave standing water in the tub. If you have seen any water around the base or the plug, leave it switched off entirely.

What if the fill hose or valve needs plumbing work?

We work on the appliance's own accessible connection. Seized valves, weeping supply pipework or new connection points are plumbing work, and we will tell you that rather than attempting it as part of an appliance repair.

How much will it cost?

The booking fee is paid when you book. The hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost is quoted and approved before work starts, and any parts, such as an inlet valve, are identified and quoted separately.
