Find Why the Hot Water Timer Is Not Starting a Heating Cycle
We check the timer schedule, controls, power and connected cylinder or immersion response to identify why the programmed hot-water period is missed.
Booking fee plus hourly labour — the price is confirmed before any work starts.

A hot-water timer coordinates when the system heats stored water, so an incorrect schedule or control fault can leave a cylinder cold at the time you expect. The timer may also be working while an immersion, thermostat, pump or other heat source is not responding. Maintenance Men assesses user-accessible timer settings, connected water-side controls and suitable electrical components within competence. We do not work on a gas boiler’s gas or combustion side; if that is implicated, we refer it to a trusted Gas Safe registered partner.
Check the schedule, not the wiring
Look at the display or ordinary user controls and note whether the clock, programme and mode appear as expected. A power interruption can reset some timers, and daylight-saving changes or an accidental setting change can shift a heating period. If you know how to set the normal programme using the manufacturer’s instructions, you may check it, but do not remove the timer faceplate or touch wiring. Record whether hot water is produced when another heating mode is selected only if the control’s normal instructions make that clear. Do not repeatedly switch circuits on and off or reset a tripping device.
Follow the command through the system
We identify the system type and assess whether the timer appears to call for heat at the expected time, then consider what the connected cylinder, immersion or water-side controls do. Depending on the arrangement, a thermostat, relay, valve or power supply may interrupt the chain even when the timer display looks normal. We check accessible equipment safely, isolating electrical supplies before permitted work. A timer fault should not be assumed merely because the hot water is cold. If a gas boiler is part of the arrangement, we stay away from its gas and combustion components and refer those concerns to a Gas Safe partner.
Repair the failed link where possible
A schedule reset may be enough in one case; a failed timer, electrical connection, thermostat or downstream component calls for a different remedy. We explain what checks support the proposed fix and whether a replacement timer suits the existing system. Compatibility, programming features and parts availability matter, and materials are quoted separately. If controls are obsolete or the system wiring needs wider work, the job may require a separate quote or a qualified specialist. No repair begins until you have approved the full cost. We do not promise the timer itself is defective before checking its response and connected equipment.
Avoid unsafe electrical troubleshooting
Do not pull a timer from the wall, bridge terminals or use a test pen to diagnose mains wiring. If a breaker trips, leave it off and report the event. A burning smell, crackling or heat at a control needs prompt attention; stop using it and keep clear. If water has reached an electrical control, do not touch it or approach through a wet area. Only isolate power from a safe, dry and accessible point if you know what it controls. These precautions help prevent an ordinary scheduling issue from becoming an electrical hazard.
Book with the schedule details
Book online and tell us what the timer display shows, when the system should heat, whether hot water is available at other times and what type of cylinder or immersion is fitted, if known. Do not remove covers for model information. The booking fee is paid when booking. The hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit; we quote the full cost and obtain approval before work starts. Parts and materials may be quoted separately. Gas-side work, if required, is referred rather than performed by Maintenance Men.

How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
A timer that does not activate hot water may be incorrectly scheduled, losing power or failing to signal the heating components. Cold water alone does not tell us which. We check accessible settings and the system response, keeping electrical work within competence and explaining any parts or further work before proceeding.
What our customers say about our heating & radiators service
5 out of 5 from 10 reviews
Fast, tidy and friendly
Booked the £220 booking-fee slot on Tuesday and got a message confirming the time the same morning. The cause was explained, the price agreed before any work started, and the job was done in about 46 minutes. Clean and tidy when they left.
Job: No Heating from Boiler
Turned up when they said
What I appreciated was being told what was actually wrong before anyone started. Sorted in under 46 minutes and the invoice matched the quote to the penny.
Job: Expansion Vessel Fault
Exactly what was quoted
I had put off sorting this for months because I expected a runaround. Quoted the booking fee plus hourly rate upfront, stuck to it, and actually found the underlying cause rather than just clearing the symptom. Worked neatly and hoovered up afterwards.
Job: Airlock in Hot Water System

Questions people ask about timer not activating hot water
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Can I reset the timer programme myself?
You may check or set user-facing controls if you can follow the manufacturer’s instructions safely. Do not remove the faceplate or touch wiring.
What if the display looks normal but water is still cold?
The timer may be working while a thermostat, immersion, supply or other connected component is not. We assess the response through the system before choosing a repair.
Can you repair a boiler gas-control fault found during the visit?
No. We do not work on gas or combustion components. We refer any gas-side issue to a trusted Gas Safe registered partner.
Why might the timer appear to run at the wrong time?
A clock reset after power loss, a changed programme or a mode selection can alter the expected period. Note the display and schedule for the assessment.
How are the visit and replacement timer priced?
The booking fee is paid when booking; the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. We quote the full cost for approval before work starts, and quote parts or materials separately.
