Plaster fails in a characteristic way: it starts as a small area that sounds hollow when you tap it, then a corner crumbles, then a patch comes away entirely. It might follow a leak, a nail hammered into the wrong place, or decades of the plaster simply losing its grip on the wall behind. Whatever the cause, the repair principle is the same — you cannot fill on top of loose plaster and expect it to stay. The weak material has to go, and the sound edge has to be found before rebuilding starts.

Understanding what has failed

There are three common situations. Localised damage — a gouge, a chipped corner, damage around removed fittings — usually needs only a patching fill into sound surroundings. A blown patch, where a whole area has come away from the wall but the surrounding plaster is sound, needs that area cut back and rebuilt. And generalised failure, where large areas sound hollow or the plaster is soft and crumbling throughout, is a bigger job than a handyman visit: large-scale replastering is a plasterer's project, and we will say so when we see it.

Moisture matters too. If the plaster is damaged because of a leak or rising damp, the source has to be resolved first — otherwise the new plaster fails exactly like the old. Where we find evidence of damp or water ingress, we stop and recommend a damp specialist before any repair is worthwhile.

How we assess a plaster repair

We start by sounding the wall — tapping gently to find where solid plaster ends and hollow, debonded plaster begins. We check the wall construction behind, look for staining or salts that suggest moisture, and confirm the depth of damage. We also ask about the wall's history, because older houses in the West Midlands can have lime plaster, textured coatings or other older finishes that behave differently from modern gypsum plaster and deserve appropriate treatment.

The repair method

For a typical blown or damaged patch: the loose plaster is removed back to a sound edge, the edge is neatened, and the background is prepared — brushed clean, and dampened or primed depending on the surface. The base is then built up with bonding or patching plaster where the loss is deep, allowed to set, and finished with a skim coat to bring it flush and smooth. Each coat needs its own time; plaster cannot be hurried without cracking or crumbling later.

Drying is the part people underestimate. A modest skim patch may be touch-dry within hours but can need several days before it is pale and ready to sand and decorate. Deep repairs take longer. We will tell you the realistic timeline rather than promising a same-day perfect finish.

Limits, and when we refer you

We repair contained areas honestly and well. We do not take on whole-room replastering, and we will not paper over problems: cracks that suggest structural movement, plaster affected by ongoing damp, or older coatings we suspect may contain asbestos all get stopped and referred to the appropriate specialist before they are disturbed.

Decoration and aftercare

A finished plaster repair is a smooth, sound surface — not a painted one. Matching paint is a separate decorating job, and fresh plaster genuinely needs priming and a couple of coats, usually over the whole wall so the patch does not show. Keep the repair undisturbed while it dries; the colour change from darker to lighter pink or white is the visual sign it is drying, not a fault.

Booking a plaster repair

Tell us roughly the size of the affected area and what you know about the cause. Same-day visits may be available for straightforward patches. You pay a booking fee when booking, the hourly rate depends on how soon you need us, and the full cost is quoted and approved before work starts. Any plaster, tape or board needed is identified during assessment and quoted separately.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

Blown, crumbling or cracked plaster makes a whole wall feel tired, even when the damage is only in one corner. Rebuilding plaster is a craft job — it needs the loose material removed back to a sound edge, the right base coats, and honest drying time. We do it step by step so the repair holds for years, not months.

Questions people ask about plaster wall repair

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Can I repair blown plaster myself?

Small areas are manageable for a careful DIYer, but it is easy to cut back too little, apply the wrong undercoat, or rush the drying and end up with cracks. If the hollow area is large, or you cannot tell how far the failure extends, an assessment first will save you a wasted weekend.

What exactly do you do during the assessment?

We tap-sound the wall to map where plaster is still bonded, check the wall construction behind it, and look for signs of damp, staining or movement. We then describe the repair plan, how many coats it needs, and the realistic drying time before you commit to anything.

Is there a limit to what a plaster repair can achieve?

Yes. We handle contained patches and damaged areas well, but whole-room or whole-wall replastering is a larger plastering project with different access and timing. If the plaster failure follows damp, ongoing water ingress or structural movement, filling is the wrong answer — we stop and point you to a damp specialist or surveyor first.

How long before I can paint the repair?

A small skim patch typically needs several days to dry fully before priming and painting; deeper repairs take longer. The patch tells you how it is doing — it lightens in colour as it dries. Painting too early traps moisture and causes blisters or discolouration later.

What will the visit cost me?

A booking fee is paid when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit — urgent same-day work is charged differently from a planned visit. The full cost of the agreed repair is quoted before we start, and you approve it. Plaster and materials are identified and quoted separately.
