Broken, not necessarily finished

A snapped chair leg, a drawer front torn from its carcass, a cam fitting that sheared when the wardrobe was moved — most furniture failures are repairable, and the honest question is never "can anything be done" but "is repair the right answer for this piece". That is exactly how we approach it: assess first, repair what can reasonably be repaired, and be straight with you when a part or a replacement is the better call. What we will not do is charge you for a fix that fails again in a month.

What we assess

We look at what failed and why. A joint that failed under load may be repairable — cleaned, re-glued and reinforced for years of service — while the same failure in a swollen chipboard panel may mean the panel is beyond rescue. Broken fixings such as cams, dowels, brackets, castors and gas lifts usually have a manufacturer replacement part, and identifying and fitting it correctly is often the cleanest repair. Splits and cracks in solid timber can often be glued, clamped and reinforced; the same damage in veneered board is a more honest conversation. You get that assessment in plain terms before any work starts.

How repairs are done

Repairs are made to carry load again, not just to look closed. Joints are cleaned of old glue where needed, the correct adhesive is used for the material and left to cure properly under clamp, broken fixings are replaced with the right part rather than the nearest screw, and repairs are reinforced where the piece will take real stress. Where a maker's replacement part is needed — a runner set, a hinge, a panel, a cylinder — we identify it and it is quoted separately for you to order; we do not invent compatibility where we are not sure of it, because a wrong part in a repair is worse than no part.

The honest limits

Some things are not sensible repairs: structural failures in load-bearing parts of seats and beds, fire- or water-damaged board, and pieces where the repair would cost more than a decent replacement. We will say so rather than take money for a fix that will fail again. And where the broken piece is something you or a child leans on daily — a chair, a bunk bed, a shelf — we will tell you when it should not be used until repaired, because a failed joint under a person is not a small problem. Honesty here is the whole service.

Common failures we see

Some failures recur so often they are worth naming: cam fittings sheared when a wardrobe was dragged rather than lifted, drawer boxes split at the corners after years of overloading, chair joints that failed where someone lent back on the rear legs, and castors snapped off by a curb or a door threshold. Knowing the pattern helps us diagnose quickly and arrive with the right approach. It also helps you prevent the next one — furniture carried rather than dragged, and loaded within what it was designed for, rarely fails at all.

Booking a repair

Send a photo if you can and describe how it broke; it helps us arrive with the right approach and tools. A booking fee is paid when you book, labour is hourly with the rate depending on how soon you need the visit, and the full cost is quoted for your approval before work starts — with any parts we identify quoted separately. Same-day may be available, we are fully insured, and we cover the West Midlands.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

Questions people ask about broken furniture repair

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Can I repair broken furniture myself with glue?

Sometimes — a clean break in solid timber, glued, clamped properly and left to cure, can hold well. What goes wrong is glue as a substitute for the right fixing, no clamping pressure, or using the glue in a rush before it has cured, and chipboard that has already crumbled rarely takes glue at all. If the piece carries weight — a chair, a bed, a shelf — the cost of a failed repair is higher than the saving.

What do you assess before starting a repair?

We look at what failed, why it failed and what the material will allow: whether a joint can be re-glued and reinforced, whether a fixing can be replaced with the manufacturer's part, and whether the surrounding material is sound enough to hold a repair. You get that assessment in plain language before any work starts. If repair is not the sensible answer, we say so rather than sell you one.

Is it safe to keep using the furniture until it is repaired?

It depends on what the piece does and where it failed. A decorative piece with a broken drawer front is one thing; a chair, bed or shelf with a failed load-bearing joint is another, because a collapse under someone is not a small incident. We will tell you clearly when a piece should not be used until repaired, and we would rather you heard that plainly than discovered it the hard way.

Do you supply the manufacturer replacement parts?

We identify the correct part — hinge, runner, cam, panel, cylinder — and it is quoted separately for you to order from the maker, because ordering direct is usually the reliable route for the right part. Once it arrives, we fit it properly as part of the repair. We do not guess at compatibility or substitute near-miss parts, especially not on gas lifts or anything carrying load.

How much does furniture repair cost?

A booking fee is paid when you book, labour is hourly with the rate depending on how soon you need the visit, and the full cost is quoted for your approval before work starts. The quote reflects the actual repair, not a guess from a photo alone. Any manufacturer replacement parts are identified and quoted separately, so you always know what is labour and what is parts.
