What Makes a Wiring Fault an Emergency
Some faults can wait politely for a booked Tuesday. These cannot: burning smells from any fitting, socket, switch or wall; visible sparks, arcing or crackling; scorch marks or melting around any electrical point; anyone receiving a shock or tingle from a tap, radiator or appliance; water leaking onto or into electrics; exposed conductors within reach of people or pets; and half the house losing power with no obvious cause. What these share is a fault that is active — producing heat, arcing or leakage as you stand there — and every hour it remains energised is an hour the damage grows.
The First Five Minutes
Safety in the first minutes is simple and it matters more than speed. If the fault involves heat, smell, sparks or water: switch off at the consumer unit's main switch, if you can reach it without passing the affected area — that de-energises everything at once, which no socket switch can do. Keep children and pets out of the room and do not touch fittings that are hot, wet, scorched or sparking. If someone has had a shock, get medical advice even if they seem fine — electrical effects are not always visible. And if smoke or flames are present, call 999 first; the electrician's work comes after the fire service's, not instead of it.
How Our Emergency Visits Work
Book the same way as any other visit — online or by phone — and take the earliest slot offered; emergency slots are held back for calls like yours. The engineer arrives, confirms what is safe and what is not, and makes the installation safe first: isolation where needed, temporary measures where a full repair must wait. Then diagnosis, because an emergency repair done blind is a repair that repeats. With the fault located, you get a clear explanation, a firm price, and — in the large majority of cases — the repair completed in the same visit: a cooked connection remade, a damaged cable run replaced, a failed fitting renewed.
When a Repair Needs More Than One Visit
Some emergency faults are the visible edge of a bigger condition: a circuit whose cable is perishing along its length, a consumer unit that needs replacing, an installation that has been telling several stories at once. Where that is the case, the first visit makes everything safe and restores what can be safely restored, and the follow-on work is quoted in full and scheduled with you — never priced by surprise. You will always know, before we leave, exactly what is safe to use, what is isolated, and what happens next.
What It Costs in an Emergency
The same structure as always: a booking fee when you book, then hourly labour at the rate for the speed you need — emergency and same-day attendance sit at the top of that scale, and we will tell you the rate when you book. The repair is quoted and approved before it starts, including in urgent visits; calm pricing is part of calm work.
After the Emergency
Once the immediate fault is repaired and tested, we will tell you what caused it and what, if anything, elsewhere in the installation deserves attention. Emergencies are often the first symptom of an ageing installation, and an honest note now is worth more than a second emergency later.
When to Call Us
For the situations above, call as soon as you notice — earlier bookings mean earlier slots, and earlier slots mean less time with a fault live. For anything that can wait safely for a routine appointment, the normal booking path is cheaper; we will tell you honestly which sort of call you are making.
Book an Emergency Visit Now
An electrical emergency feels overwhelming precisely because it is unfamiliar — but every one of these faults has a known, methodical solution. Call or book online now, take the earliest slot, keep the power off if there is heat, smell or water involved, and we will handle the rest from your doorstep.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
When a wiring fault turns urgent — burning smells, sparks, scorch marks, a shock from a fitting, or power gone in half the house with no explanation — you need an engineer who arrives quickly and works calmly. We keep same-day and emergency slots available for exactly these calls. Switch the power off at the consumer unit if it is safe to do so, keep everyone clear of the affected area, and we will take it from there: isolate, diagnose, make safe, and repair.
What our customers say about our electrical service
4.6 out of 5 from 11 reviews
Does what it says on the tin
No complaints about the work itself — clear explanation, sensible advice, fair price. Booking online was easy enough once I found the right job page.
Job: Smoke Alarm Replacement
Fixed it, but took longer than expected
Work itself was fine and tidy. Communication beforehand was patchy — I did not get the confirmation message and had to ring to check the slot. Would still use again.
Job: Flickering Outdoor Lights
Turned up when they said
Third time we have used Maintenance Men, and the same experience each time: agreed price, proper explanation, job done in one visit. The hourly rate is fair for the standard of work.
Job: Appliance Causing Power Trip

Questions people ask about emergency wiring fault repair
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
What does an emergency wiring call-out cost?
You pay a booking fee when you book and labour is charged hourly, with the rate depending on how quickly you need us — same-day and emergency attendance is the higher end. The repair itself is always quoted in full and approved before any work starts, emergencies included.
Should I try to fix an emergency myself while I wait?
No — isolating at the consumer unit is the one useful action, and beyond that, hands off. Emergency faults involve active heat, arcing or leakage, and touching damaged fittings or wiring without testing equipment is precisely how shocks happen. Keep clear, keep the power off, and let the engineer work methodically.
What will the engineer do when they arrive?
Make the installation safe first — isolation and checks before anything else — then diagnose the fault with proper testing rather than guesswork. You get an explanation and a firm price before the repair, and most emergency faults are repaired and tested within the same visit.
Is it an emergency if half the house loses power?
Treat it as one until proven otherwise. Partial power loss with no obvious cause can mean a failed connection that is heating, a damaged cable, or a supply problem — and which of those it is cannot be known without testing. If nothing smells hot and nothing is warm, it can wait a few hours; any smell, heat or scorching moves it to urgent.
Can every emergency be fixed in one visit?
Mostly, yes — cooked connections, damaged cable sections and failed fittings are usually repaired on the spot. Where the fault points to a bigger condition, such as perishing cable along a whole circuit, the first visit makes everything safe and the fuller work is quoted and scheduled with you rather than improvised.
