A System, Not a Handful of Alarms
The difference between a house with smoke alarms and a property with a fire alarm system is coordination. A system has a control panel that watches every device and reports exactly where a problem is; detection arranged in zones so you know what's happening where; sounders positioned to be heard everywhere, including by a sleeping household; call points so anyone can raise the alarm manually; and wiring — or wireless links — connecting it all with supervision, so a fault announces itself instead of hiding.
That coordination is what makes the difference between "an alarm went off somewhere" and "the panel says smoke in the hallway, everyone's moving". This page is about installing that properly.
What Your Property Needs Depends on the Property
A fire alarm system is designed around the building, not bought off a shelf. A family home needs detection on every level and interlinked warning; a rental property — especially a house in multiple occupation — needs a system with proper coverage, a panel that identifies the zone, and sounders that reach every bedroom; a home with a loft conversion, a large layout or vulnerable occupants needs detection placed around how people actually sleep and escape.
The design decisions that matter are these: which type of detection in each area (optical smoke alarms for circulation spaces, heat alarms for kitchens and garages, combined coverage where risk is higher); mains power with battery backup for resilience; interlinking so one detection sounds everywhere; and panel zones arranged so that any future fault or activation is traceable to a place, not just a beep.
Why Installation Quality Is the Whole Ball Game
A fire alarm system is a long-term structure hidden in ceilings and walls, and the quality of its wiring, connections and device placement decides how it behaves for the next fifteen years. A poorly made joint behind a detector works fine on handover day and becomes a mystery fault three winters later. A sounder in the wrong corner leaves a bedroom unprotected. A panel wired without proper zones turns every fault into guesswork.
For landlords there's a compliance dimension too: alarm provision in rental properties is expected to work and be documented, and a properly designed, professionally installed and recorded system is what stands up at inspection — and what lets you sleep at night with tenants in the building.
How We Design It
Every installation starts with a survey: your property's layout, how the rooms are used, who sleeps where, what exists already, and where power and cabling can sensibly run. From that we propose a design in plain English — which devices, where, what type, how powered, how interlinked, and what the panel will tell you when something happens. You approve the plan before anything is drilled, and the quote covers the whole job rather than arriving in instalments.
How We Install It
Installation is a proper building trade job done tidily: cable runs routed with protection where they pass through vulnerable spaces, ceiling and wall positions marked and agreed, devices mounted on sound bases, and every connection terminated properly at the panel and at each device. The panel is configured with your zones, the backup batteries are fitted and loaded, and wireless components — where used — are paired and signal-checked across the property.
We work around your household or your tenants, keep disruption contained to the days agreed, and make good whatever we open up.
Commissioning: The Part That Proves It Works
A system isn't finished when it's installed; it's finished when it's commissioned. That means every detector activated and confirmed at the panel, every sounder heard from the furthest bedroom, every call point tested, backup power proven by simulating a mains failure, and the panel's fault reporting verified — we want the system to tell us if something goes wrong later, so we test that too.
You get a walkthrough at the end: what's installed, where, what the panel displays mean, and how to test the system monthly. We record what was fitted and when, which becomes the baseline history for servicing.
Aftercare
Fire alarm systems reward routine. We'll set you up with a monthly walk-test you can do in minutes, and recommend a servicing schedule — an annual professional check is the usual rhythm — so batteries, connections and detectors are looked at before they fail rather than after. When the system's backup batteries or detectors approach their replacement age, we'll flag it with dates rather than leaving you to guess.
When to Call Us
Book a design-and-install visit if you're fitting out a rental property, if your home has grown — a loft conversion, an extension, an annex — and its alarm cover hasn't kept up, if you're replacing a patchwork of old standalone alarms with something coordinated, or if you simply want a system where one beep means the whole property knows.
Book Your Fire Alarm Installation Today
A well-designed fire alarm system is installed once and quietly protects your property for well over a decade, and the design and installation quality are what decide whether it does. Call Maintenance Men or book online for a survey, and we'll propose a system that fits your property, install it cleanly and hand it over tested, documented and understood.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
A fire alarm system is more than several alarms on ceilings: it's a panel that supervises everything, detection arranged in zones, sounders loud enough to wake the whole property and wiring that ties it together. We design the system around your property's layout, install it cleanly and prove it works zone by zone before we hand it over — so what you're left with is a system, not a collection of devices.
What our customers say about our electrical service
4.6 out of 5 from 11 reviews
Does what it says on the tin
No complaints about the work itself — clear explanation, sensible advice, fair price. Booking online was easy enough once I found the right job page.
Job: Smoke Alarm Replacement
Fixed it, but took longer than expected
Work itself was fine and tidy. Communication beforehand was patchy — I did not get the confirmation message and had to ring to check the slot. Would still use again.
Job: Flickering Outdoor Lights
Turned up when they said
Third time we have used Maintenance Men, and the same experience each time: agreed price, proper explanation, job done in one visit. The hourly rate is fair for the standard of work.

Questions people ask about fire alarm installation
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Can I install a fire alarm system myself?
Standalone battery alarms, yes — and they're better than nothing. But a proper system involves mains-powered devices, a control panel, zone wiring or wireless pairing, and commissioning that proves the whole chain works. Done badly, you get a system that works on day one and produces mystery faults from year two; the wiring and connections are where quality actually lives.
What does an installation involve day to day?
A survey and agreed design first, then the physical work: cable runs, device mounting, panel fitting, backup batteries and configuration. The visit(s) end with commissioning — every detector, sounder and call point tested, backup power proven — and a walkthrough so you know how to test and read the system.
What's the difference between this and just buying interlinked smoke alarms?
Scale and supervision. A system adds a control panel that monitors every device, tells you which zone has a problem, and reports its own faults; sounders placed for whole-property audibility; and call points for manual activation. Interlinked alarms on their own protect a house well — a system adds the oversight and clarity that larger or tenanted properties need.
How is a fire alarm installation priced?
There's a booking fee when you book, and the work is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how quickly you need us. Because installations vary with the property, we survey first, then quote the full job for your approval before anything is drilled or wired — so you approve one price for the whole installation.
How long does a system installation take?
It depends on the property's size, the number of devices and how much cabling is needed — a straightforward domestic system is typically a day's work, while larger or tenanted properties take longer. We'll give you a realistic timescale with the quote after the survey, and we keep disruption contained to the agreed days.
