A repeated trip is useful evidence

A protective device disconnects power when it detects a condition that could harm the circuit or equipment. If trips happen at particular times, after using one appliance, or across several circuits, that pattern can help locate the fault. A trip that appears random may still be linked to a device cycling on, a heating element warming up or a connection that fails under load. Write down what was switched on, which device moved and whether the trip affected one room or more.

Overload, leakage or a developing fault

An overloaded circuit carries more demand than it should, often when several higher-power appliances are used together. An RCD can trip when current leaks from a circuit, while a circuit breaker may operate after an overload or short circuit. A damaged appliance, water ingress, wiring deterioration or a loose connection can also cause recurring interruption. These problems can look alike from the front of the fuse box, so changing habits alone may not solve a fault in the installation.

A methodical search across the circuits

The electrician checks which protective device operates and identifies what the circuit supplies. They ask about the trip pattern, recent changes and any appliance that seems to trigger it, then inspect and test in a controlled sequence. They may isolate individual items or sections of wiring to see whether the trip follows a particular part. The tests are chosen to narrow the fault rather than repeatedly restoring power. We explain the likely cause and quote the work before starting repairs.

Repair the cause, not the symptom

A faulty appliance may need to stay unplugged; an overloaded circuit may need its use reviewed; wiring or a protective device may need repair or replacement. If the issue involves several circuits, the electrician checks shared parts of the installation instead of assuming each circuit has a separate fault. After the repair, relevant circuits are tested and the protection checked. Any part that cannot safely be restored is left isolated, with a clear explanation of the next step.

Keep a simple trip record

A short note of the time, device that tripped, rooms affected and appliances in use can save time during diagnosis. Do not deliberately recreate the fault by switching equipment on and off, and do not keep resetting a breaker that trips again. If you notice a burning smell, heat, crackling, sparks or visible damage, treat the fault as urgent. Switch off only if the consumer-unit control is safely accessible and leave the area if there is smoke or fire.

What the visit involves

We use the trip history to focus testing: which switch moves, how often it happens and what was running. The electrician checks the affected circuits and separates possible appliance, overload, wiring and device causes. The proposed repair and cost are explained before chargeable work. Once complete, the relevant protection and circuit are tested, and any remaining issue is discussed with you.

Aftercare and safety

Do not use repeated resets as a workaround. If trips continue, leave the affected circuit off and arrange checks. Urgent signs include heat, a burning smell, sparks or smoke; keep clear and isolate only if it is safe to do so.

Book your electrical visit

If trips are disrupting daily use, book a fault-finding visit and share the pattern you have recorded. Repeatedly resetting the same device will not identify the cause.

Further details for your electrician

Several trips close together can have one shared trigger, but unrelated faults are possible too. The electrician compares which switches operate and whether the events happen under the same conditions. This is more useful than simply counting how often the power goes off. If you have a written log, include the circuit or room, the equipment in use and whether the trip occurred at start-up or after some time.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

Booked 14+ days ahead

£25 booking fee

then £85 per hour of labour

Best value. Book the slot now, pay the smallest booking fee.

Booked within 48 hours

£100 booking fee

then £65 per hour of labour

For jobs that can wait a day or two but not a fortnight.

Same-day call-out

£220 booking fee

then £45 per hour of labour

Urgent problems: standing water, no heat, no power, leaks.

1

Book the slot

Choose the window that suits you and pay the booking fee. That holds your place in the diary.

2

We diagnose on site

The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.

3

You approve, we work

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

When circuits trip repeatedly, the cause may be an appliance, an overloaded circuit or a fault in the wiring. We work through the pattern and test the affected circuits so you can stop relying on repeated resets.

What our customers say about our electrical service

4.6 out of 5 from 11 reviews

Does what it says on the tin

No complaints about the work itself — clear explanation, sensible advice, fair price. Booking online was easy enough once I found the right job page.

Job: Smoke Alarm Replacement

Fixed it, but took longer than expected

Work itself was fine and tidy. Communication beforehand was patchy — I did not get the confirmation message and had to ring to check the slot. Would still use again.

Job: Flickering Outdoor Lights

Turned up when they said

Third time we have used Maintenance Men, and the same experience each time: agreed price, proper explanation, job done in one visit. The hourly rate is fair for the standard of work.

Questions people ask about repeated circuit trips

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Can I stop repeated trips by unplugging appliances?

Unplugging accessible appliances may help identify a trigger, but do not handle anything hot, wet or damaged. If the breaker still trips or you are unsure, leave it off and book an inspection.

How will the electrician diagnose the problem?

Note which switch moves, the rooms affected, what appliances were in use and when the trip happened. The electrician will use that pattern alongside inspection and electrical tests.

Can repeated tripping cause a fire?

The trip is intended to disconnect power when it detects a problem, but the reason for repeated trips still needs investigation. Burning smells, unusual heat, sparks or visible damage need urgent attention.

Why does it trip only when an appliance starts?

The appliance may have a fault or the circuit may be affected by the extra load at start-up. Testing can establish whether the issue follows the appliance or lies in the fixed installation.

How is the work priced?

You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how quickly you need us. The full cost of the work is quoted before we start, so you approve it before any tools come out.
