We test delays from sensor to hub to phone and identify whether the bottleneck is signal, settings or an external service.

Slow response is a broad symptom, not a diagnosis. It can mean a sensor takes several seconds to report, the hub is slow to process events, the app is waiting for a cloud service, or your phone is delaying a notification in the background. Camera live view adds another layer because video has more data to move than a door contact. The first task is to establish which response you mean and measure where the waiting happens.
The common bottlenecks
Weak wireless signal is a frequent cause of delayed sensor events. Devices at the edge of range retry messages, and a weak battery can make those retries even slower. A hub carrying many devices or routines may take longer to process events, especially if it is poorly placed or has not been restarted for a long time. Phones can delay app activity through battery optimisation or background restrictions. For cameras, a slow broadband upload speed or congested WiFi can make live view stutter even when the camera itself is functioning. Finally, cloud services and third-party platforms can introduce delays that are beyond the local system.
How we measure the response
We reproduce the symptom and time it rather than relying on impressions. We trigger a sensor and note how quickly the hub registers it, how quickly the app records it, and when the phone displays the alert. For live video, we check local WiFi strength and the connection path to the app. We inspect batteries, hub load and placement, wireless band and the phone's app settings. If one device is slow while the rest respond promptly, we focus on its battery, signal and position; a system-wide lag points further along the chain.
Fixes that may help
Depending on what testing shows, we may replace a weak battery, move a sensor or hub, adjust an appropriate router setting, simplify an overloaded routine, restore phone background permissions or configure the hub correctly. If the hub is at practical capacity, we explain the options rather than promising that endless changes will overcome it. Additional equipment or replacement devices are quoted separately and only with your approval.
Honest limitations
We cannot guarantee the speed or availability of your broadband, the manufacturer's cloud service or a third-party platform. If the local system responds promptly but a remote app is delayed by an external service, we will show you that distinction and be clear about what remains. We will not advise weakening WiFi encryption, authentication or security settings to gain speed. A faster system that is easier to access without permission is not a useful improvement.
Aftercare and testing
After changes, we test the same event again and compare the response. Keep the system app allowed to run in the background, and repeat a simple monthly alert test. If slow response comes back after a router replacement, app update or addition of several devices, note when it began; that often reveals the cause.
Booking
Book through the Maintenance Men website or by phone. Describe what responds slowly, roughly how long it takes, which devices are affected and whether the issue occurs locally or only when you are away. Mention recent changes to your router, phone or system as well.
A response-time expectation worth keeping
Smart systems depend on radio links, home broadband, mobile networks and sometimes remote services, so no honest installer can promise a fixed response time under every condition. What we can do is establish a sensible baseline in your home, remove avoidable delay and show you how to repeat the test. If response is consistently slower at one location, record which device and time of day; that detail helps separate a coverage problem from congestion or an external service delay.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
When a security system takes too long to react, the delay can make it feel unreliable even if every device technically works. A keypad that responds late, an alert that lags, or a camera that takes ages to load all have different possible causes. We time the steps from device to hub to app, check the network and device health, and explain which part is slowing things down — including where the delay is outside your control.
What our customers say about our Security & CCTV service
5 out of 5 from 7 reviews
Would use again
Third time we have used Maintenance Men, and the same experience each time: agreed price, proper explanation, job done in one visit. The hourly rate is fair for the standard of work.
Job: CCTV Installation
Second time we have used them
I had put off sorting this for months because I expected a runaround. Quoted the booking fee plus hourly rate upfront, stuck to it, and actually found the underlying cause rather than just clearing the symptom. Worked neatly and hoovered up afterwards.
Job: Backup Battery Fault
Exactly what was quoted
What I appreciated was being told what was actually wrong before anyone started. Sorted in under 56 minutes and the invoice matched the quote to the penny.
Job: Alarm Repair Service

Questions people ask about slow smart security response
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Can I make my smart security system faster myself?
You can check that the hub has power, restart it according to its manual, replace a low battery and make sure the app is not restricted by phone battery settings. If delays persist, a timed diagnosis helps distinguish local signal and hub issues from cloud or broadband delays.
What do you check to find the slow point?
We time sensor-to-hub, hub-to-app and app-to-phone response, and check battery health, signal, hub load, router band and phone background settings. For slow camera video, we also assess WiFi and the connection path for streaming.
Will you disable security settings to improve response?
No. We will not weaken encryption, authentication or device protections to gain speed. We look for targeted changes to placement, signal, batteries or configuration that improve response while preserving security.
Why is camera live view slow when sensor alerts are quick?
Video carries much more data than a sensor event, so the camera depends more on stable WiFi and available upload bandwidth. The issue may be camera placement, wireless congestion or your internet connection rather than the hub itself.
How is the visit charged?
You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost of the work is quoted and approved by you before we start, with any parts quoted separately.
